Title: 12 Sec combo
Post by: Garrick Clark on December 07, 2018, 18:32:16 pm
Hi Racers.
I'm just wondering what would  the power and weight of a beetle with a standard ratio 15oo box with 4.125 R and P on 205 tyres need to be at to get into the 12's.
I'm trying to work out were I might be timewise  with my bug without going to the strip.
Bug is 1870lbs with me in it.
300 hp
1500 ratios with 4.125

Thanks.
Feel free to post your power/weight/1/4 times.

214 hk
a link that you can calculate how much hp

What you do is change the gearbox     ( 4.125  3.80 2.05 1.45 1.05)

Hey thanks Micke.
So it calculates at 214 HP to do a 12 with a 1870lb vehicle. So I should be able to go lower than a 12 with my current HP. So long as I had the above ratios.
So Micke with my standard ratios what would you think my time would be.
I need street ratios really but still want to have a low times street bug.
Comes down to more power/less weight doesn't it.

There are different ways to go if you want to use the car on the strip if you want to drive fast
To 99% it is the gearbox
You can change 3an's drive so it should go faster
After that you have 0.89 on gear 4 (so the peak speed is 230kmt @ 7200 rpm
The cheapest way is to have different large tires
Small on the strip big on the street

It will break 1st gear trying :o

Stock 1500 1st gear just isn't up to it, but in an imaginary world where it didn't break ;D then it should run about mid 12s, trouble with a turbo car is you cant leave with max boost & hp so using 300hp in any 1/4 mile calc like the one Micke posted[which is a really good calc  :) ] wont give anywhere near accurate results, also it calcs based on 100% traction which you will not have, finally its rear wheel hp and I am guessing you are using flywheel hp?

Here's a few actual 1/4 mile times from cars/engines I have built

67 beetle 195rwhp N/A 1750lbs, regular radials 12.44@103[gearing to tall]
Same car with slicks and 280ish rwhp using nitrous 10.42@125mph

63 ragtop beetle 210rwhp high compression N/A 1735lbs slicks no burnout 11.56@116mph

56 oval beetle slicks 350rwhp drawthrough turbo approx. 1700lbs 10.63@128mph

850 Fiat with VW engine, just regular N/A pump gas 2276, approx 150 rwhp just under 1500lbs 11.91@109mph

cheers Richie

Hi Richie, Yes its flywheel power. The box I now have installed is the same ratio as my old 1500 box ,I can tell when I drive it. It feels the same. But its a KCR one. I'm hoping he put a few goodies in or did some tricks to it. its got a side plate on it and a S diff.
Dub shop Micro Squirt being fitted in Jan. So no more spark blow out + injection. Hopefully that will improve things.
So long as its quicker than the golf R boys I'll be happy.

Those Golf R's are rapid. Easy 12's with a remap. It's much easier with these new turbo cars :)

I was a passenger in one the other day. Tech wise it was good. It just didn't have a big power surge to it. So a mapped one is in the 12's.loads of air cooled v dubs will better that these days. Hopefully mine. Lol

The guy who used to do my machine work has a customer who owns one with a remap and hybrid turbo, it runs 10.8-9 driven there and back. He swaps tyres at the track and drives it daily. Most stock modern stuff isn?t that quick on the track, add another quarter mile and it will be a different story
