Post by: louisb on November 05, 2007, 15:13:18 pm
This was prompted by the "ever been dead" thread. You guys who drive your car a lot, What type of spares do you usually carry? What is in your traveling kit? For me I usually carry the following:

can of fix a flat. (No spare tire.)
fan belt
spare 009 dizzy with caps, points & rotor
fuses
brake fluid
Tool box w/ the usual tools.
fire extinguisher

Boy this is a good one.  I once wrote something for VW Trends on this one.  I carry a bunch of hand tools in a tool roll up that I bought years ago.  When full it weighs about 35lbs.  I have a container that I got from Sears that holds spare parts.  I have a spare distributer, coil, clutch cable, throttle cable, clutch hook, electrical wire and connectors, different jets and various carburettor parts.  I have a professional tire repair kit so I can plug tires and have used it on the road.  I carry one of those small compressors that run off of 12V to pump up a flat tire.  I carry a spare set of bearings for the front hub and a spare bearing for the rear axle, you never know when you might need one.  I take a small package of hand cleaner and a roll of paper towels.  I have a spare tire gas can that holds 1 1/2 gallons of gas though I don't always take that any more.  Of course I have a spare fan belt and a bunch of misc. nuts bolts and tin hardware.  I usually have some carb cleaner and motor oil.  I have found it handy to carry a couple of barrel nuts in the kit.  I have used them many times.  Another tool that has come in handy is a length of insulate wire with alligator clips in each end.  I would recommend more than one.  I have bailed out more than one person with that.

I always carry a fan belt (obvious, but not everyone does!), clutch cable, throttle cable, valve cover gasket (the only time I needed one I didn't have any!) and on long trips I take an extra distributor too.

and a mobile phone of course  ;D

It is funny how many VW people carry a spare dizzy with them. I mean, come on, what other car groups carry a spare dizzy with them? I do it because I had an 009 seize on me one day and left me stranded.

I'll probably jinx myself!

8mm
10mm
12mm
13mm
mini adjustable wrench
7/16
carb screwdriver (10" long, skinny)
phillips screwdriver
allen wrench for jet screen covers
stock VW tool kit
spare liter of oil
fan belt
accelerator cable

luckily, I haven't had to open this box up, except on "test drives", typically when jetting car. I'll bring 18mm plug socket and swivel 3/8 ratchet.

For the longest time my issue on road was fuse that ran taillights.

On a trip from Bay Area CA to Death Valley in a hot rodded 1972 Super Beetle and a very hot rodded 1965 Bus, we packed all kinds of crazy stuff....spare 009 loaded, Kadron rebuild kits, plugs, fuel hose, cordless drill, floor jack, gasket set, swing axle boots, all the cables, fuses, SR17 starter, gen brushes, voltage regulator, stock fuel pump....plus all kinds of other crap. I had a box packed with all this crap with "EMERGENCY" written on outside in Marks A Lot.

I normally carry an old skool cooler box with all the usual stuff mentioned in previous posts - Don't forget a 36mm socket  ;) :)

I also carry some gasket carboard along with a small box with all my carb "bit'n'pieces" I am also luckey as I have a second battery fitted in the manx for the roof lights so I can jump start my self :)

oh yeah and my Black'n'silver Number Plates and ALL my documents  just in case PC PLOD pulls me over  ::) :)

Some people think a whole cooler box full tools and spares is alittle over the top but i have NEVER been stuck at the side of the road - touch wood ;) :)

I just remembered a few other bits'n'pieces :)
- Spare reulator
- Spare fuel pump
- Spare lenth of oil hose - Ask Rob about that one  ;) :)
