Title: "Oh my f***ing God" factor of 1970-75 or so? Wild combos?
Post by: Jim Ratto on November 05, 2007, 21:24:03 pm
I was kind of hoping the history of VW head porting would take us a little deeper into the annals of VW hot rodding, especially maybe some old stories about street cars that weren't far off from real drag sedans on the Seventies.
With all the cars that were running around...does anybody remember some cars and/or engine combos that really were off the chart, as far as "streetability" went and how much horsepower they put to the ground? Let's say the 1700, 88 x 69SPG, F.A.T. heads, Engle 110, 48's was the "safe", known combo.... what were the street psychopaths running? Just how wild did things get back then? We all know about the Engle 120's, 125's, 130's....but what about the real wild stuff...anybody get up into the VF cams, or the Engle 160? Anybody have specs on these vintage killer drag grinds?
Again, what steered the trends and industries away from these old combos? Bigger is Better? Porsche con rods going sailing? Lack of acceptable octane? When is the last time somebody actually built a 2074cc motor?  ;D

They was a Hawaiian guy in in my old club Cali Style (Circa 1990-93) that had a raspberry 62 ragtop with white window rubber and he had a 2074 (78 x 92) with a Engle W130, 48s and NOS. Hawaiian guys still run those crazy combos.

The quickest street cars in the early to mid 70's were running 88's and
89's bore X 78 or 82 stroke. One of the best street cams was by Engle VX 73.
Head work by F&A

i don't really know about the 70's, but they did some wild things in the 80's

mullets
pink shorts
bright colored glasses
millet jackets, best in pink
hairgel and mouse for boys
...

this car ran on alcohol and without cooling. it was a very big 2607 type4 engine (94x94), webcam 86C, 42x37 heads 48IDA's and hunt magneto.
