Title: My new car for next year......
Post by: Adele AW on November 07, 2007, 22:35:58 pm
Thought id make the most of my 3rd post on here and bore you guys about my new car that i hope to be racing next year!

We have not really mentioned too much about it as nothing ever goes to plan, but its a 1958 Sedan, bought as a 'solid' car and even though i know what too look for this got the better of us!

It needs quite a fair bit of welding and is currently being treated to the full monty by a guy local to us Jon King.

We have a 'niceee' motor on order from Pat Downs which should be with us in a couple of months 2332 with 51.5 IDA's  ;D

The car is also booked in with Chris Issacs in April for a full cage with funny car style driver surround along with wheelie bars and mini wing! The seats are also being built into the cage! :)

The rear wings and back end will be removeable with Dzus fasteners (Like the brown WPK Split Bug)

The front wheels are Weld Alumastars and the rear Erco Star cuts with M&H rear slicks and front runners and we also have lightweight Strange Engineering disc brakes all round.

The whole idea of this car is so that Steve has a car he can 'Show' and i have a car i can race! It will also carry that all important MOT :)

We are hopeing that the car will run 11's so that we can run in SPRC Pro ET (11.99 and lower index) and a bit of Powderpuff racing!

Pics below are how the car looked when it was on the road a couple of months ago and then how it looked just before it went to Jons!

Mmm my favourite wheels :) (Sorry about rubbish pic, taken on Kitchen floor!)

Hey Rob! How's it going?!

We're aiming for the Main Event for shakedown passes and then rest of the year just putting it through it's paces before going for proper paint next october time! Depending on how Adele's back is doing it might be me on driving duties (or Spencer Tramm if he gets in the seat before me  :o ;D ) After its fully painted and detailed I'd like to debut it at the Volksworld Show in March 09. This is where the show geek in me comes out  ;)

The one that Dad used to have on the red car looked to be fairly useful and didn't look too bad. I'll try and find a pic.

All we need the Wing for is a Tea Tray! Surely you can all see the benefit of that? Especially you Richie?  ???

 ;D Thanks Udo!

Another update! We picked up our parts shipment from our friend Spencer Tramm who bought them back in his suitcase for us!!  ;D ;D

Aeromotive fuel pump and regulator with carbon fibre pressure gauge! Expensive but soooooo nice!

Painless fuse box to start our wiring from
(http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd37/StripTeaseRacing/59RHD/painless.jpg)

Master cut-off switch and billet switch handle, switch panel which mounts to the roll cage and will house switches for fuel pump, ignition and starter and a Intercomp tyre pressue gauge. The pressure gauge also glows in the dark so if we run at night we can see the dial!  ;D
(http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd37/StripTeaseRacing/59RHD/jegs.jpg)

And the la pièce de résistance - Weld Aluma Star front wheels! 3.5" wide in Chevy pattern PCD.

We ordered it all through Jegs.com and we are well impressed with the service! Definately recommend them to anyone!

A quick update! Work is really progressing on the car now! John King (Kings Restorations) is working his magic and we should have the body back by the end of this month!

The floorpan is worse than we all thought but hey ho the 'pan will stay at John's and have everything sorted including the IRS conversion!

Pictures can be found on our blog! http://stripteaseracing.blogspot.com (http://stripteaseracing.blogspot.com)

Thought I'd do an update  :) Mods maybe this thread would be better moved to In Da Werks?!

Ok so the car is now back from John Kings fully welded, it took much longer than we all expected as the car was in a worse state that what we thought. The majority of the back end has been neatly cut away so I will have the rear wings and valence on Dzus fasteners..Pic below

While we were in the states we went on a parts buying mission and came with loads of goodies  ;D There is quite a few photos and more updates on the blog http://stripteaseracing.blogspot.com (http://stripteaseracing.blogspot.com)

The 2332cc engine is also now built and should be winging its way over the Atlantic in a few days! It was built by Pat Downs at CB Performance and I'm really pleased with the results! He is a great guy to deal with and kept us in the picture of everything that was happening. Pat asked if we would allow him to display the motor on the CB stand at Bug In 33 so we thought it would be rude not too!

The engine was dyno'd in the week since we've been back and it made 239hp @ 7000RPM with the fanbelt on so i'm really chufted with that! The proper results will be when the motor is in the car and running the numbers as that's where it counts!  ;D

Next up is removing the body from the 'pan and getting it blasted then the 'pan is off to Wayne Allman's for floorpan repairs, IRS conversion and new fuel lines run through the tunnel with AN fittings brazed/welded on!

Main event is out the window so our next target is now European finals but it will be tight!

Steve.

11.99 would be easy with that engine. I made 11.29 with 228 hp and almost stock weight and made 11.99 on the third run, the first one without lifting.
But  if you are aming for 11.99 you don't need any wing or sissy sticks, I agree with Richie!
The main reason I use sissy sticks is that it wheelies over the start photocell.

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: Adele AW on April 18, 2008, 09:21:57 am
:) We are aiming for anything under 11.99! A wing and sissy sticks will still be fitted ;) I like them too much!!!

Looking good.
out of interest, where did you get the media blasting done and how much was it,
i'll take it it was done with plastic rather than grit so not to distort the shell.

Cheers Frank (Bournemouth)

Hey dude! How was your trip to Berlin?!

The media blasting was done by a place in Coventry called Marrawise and it cost me.......£100!! I'm not sure what media it was they used but its the finest they do and they take real care in doing it. I was really impressed with them and how it turned out. They have done quite a few beetles now (amongst many other cars) so they know what they are doing on a bug shell! They did it in a day too! I took the shell down to them for 8.30am and picked it up again at 3.30pm! Really impressed!

The trip was ok. had another breakage just before Berlin which was a result of the snapped rockershaft stud at EBI after my shopping trip, but got it all fixed and made it back.  Went to the Mopar Nats and will be out for the August Bank holiday meet at Shakey.
Cheers for the info on the blasting

Frank

Wicked!  :) I had it it my head that you'd already had the cage done! But then my heads a very random messy place!  ;D

How you having the cage done? Are you having it so you can take the body off the car? If you intend to paint the cage I'd deffo go this way, as i know from experience it's a nightmare to paint a cage with it fixed in the car!

Yeah thats my worry about media balsting, making sure you can get all the media out. No mater how many place you block up, it still seems to get into all the nooks and crannies. I'm hoping to build a jig for mine so that the body can be turned through 360 degrees (or 270 realistically!), which will hopefully allow me to get all the media out, as well as paint underneat better.

Erm yeah the body will come off but the cage is being built into the body!! I haven't cut out any sheet metal, only the rear section so the cage has to be built into the body if its to come off. Chris has a way of doing this so its really safe too. Martin, the painter, said no problems about painting the inside and the cage which is good, he has painted quite a few race cars!

If Chris could do one in a ragtop car without having a bar going accross the middle of the rag top opening at the b post I'd be very intrested!!  ;D

As for painting the cage thats good news.  :) I know it took Stretch about 2 days to mask the areas around his so he could spray paint it!

You've got the best in the business working on your car, Chris is such a perfectionist. have you seen his door latch mechanisms on the Vanguard? all made by chris out of ali and you just need to close the door gently and it will lock, no door slamming there!

here's the Standard Vanguard, such an awesome race car

More photos from todays visit to Chris'. The cage is stunning and it has exceeded our expectations  :o We are really happy with it. We had to get measured up for the seats and the funny car cage bit. We also found out that we are going to have to move the shifter back 5-6 inches as i am a short arse and my driving position does not suit Steve and vice versa. Also to reach the gearstick fully you end up being really forward and not correctly sat within the funny car cage area, which defeats the object of having it. Whats the point in sitting all that way forward when the protection is behind you ? Although i guess not many of have this issue unless you have short legs like me  :P

Adele/Steve,

Your car looks great! And you are probably progressing 4 times as quick as I am!

I found what you found when I put my seat in- that I need to move the shifter back. I am 6'2", but because the seat is now so far back to suit my lanky frame, I am fully stretched out to get 3rd gear! It is even worse if I put the harnesses in......

The only solution I came up with- MSE Vertigate! To be honest it was the best way of explaining to the wife it is a good idea to spend about £700 on a shifter  ;D

Keep up the great work- it feels good when you see it coming together  :)

Hey Jonny,

Its taken time and plenty of dollars but i think we started July 2006, but really got to work in August last year. Small things really do make a difference and you sit and think.. yeah i have actually come along way! It felt like we were back at square one when the body was sat waiting for Wayne to do the pans :)

Your car is looking great, i bet you are pretty excited ? We are pulling out all the stops for the car to be done for the Volksworld show, it will be touch and go but i think the only thing that may hold us back is money... but fingers crossed we can make it, we have bought nearly all the expensive stuff and its now down to small stuff like window rubbers, wiring, lights, fittings etc :)

im trying to get steve to part with his Original petri steering wheel and sun & moon horn push to buy us a few more extras :D :P

Update! Chris sent us some new photo's of the funny car cage!! The roll cage is now basically complete , the funny car cage is modelled on SFI 25.4 spec so with a couple more tubes the car could be tech'd to 7.50! As it stands the car will be tagged to 8.50. The tubular frame for the seats is under construction at the moment!

:) Thanks guys! I'm so chufted with it and I haven't even seen the seats in person yet!! Rob, I 'think' its a first in a VW which would be cool but it was more of a seat choice both me and Adele could agree on  ;D ;D

Volksworld 09 is the ultimate goal so as soon as we are back we've gotta crack on!! We've been on another parts buying mission again in the states so its only the last few bits and the rest is the build!

149 Days to go until Volksworld  :o

Plans have changed slightly, the car was going to come back from Chris's this weekend and then to Jon for a day or so to finish up the few bits of metal work and then back to Chris's in a few weeks once the A-Arm issue was sorted however, the car is now staying at Chris's to finish everything off!

We are going down tomorrow to pick up the A-Arms, straight to Wayne's to be narrowed, then back to Chris next Friday firstly knocking on Pete's door for the gearbox then round the M25 with the box, A-Arms and Engine so Chris can mock up the rear end, fit the new widened CSP wings, modified Valance, Decklid and finish it all off, to then go down again Friday after and pick up the car.

We then have 2 weeks free to dry mock up anything we need and then its off to Martin Curbishley for 8 weeks for the paint http://www.curbishleypaint.com/

And here is me thinking we may get a few weeks off now its Winter   ::)

This is along with Steve and I out of the house 12 hours a day with our 'normal' jobs !!

:D

Well its time for another update! Work is progressing nicely and i'm super happy with the results!

Some clearer shots of the cage. To get the correct position for the funny car style cage (which is quite a bit further back in the car than stock seats) the shifter needed to be moved 5" backwards...

The driving position feels great, no stretching for the shifter or being too close up front.

The removable steering wheel is complete now, the wheel is fitted with a Mark Williams quick release adapter. The quick release is one of the nicest kits we've seen and although its got small splines there is a 'master' spline to ensure you are fitting the wheel in the correct position!

These are the mounts for the 5 point harness, the bottom mount is for the crotch strap, the other mounting points are on the cage and a threaded plate welded into the tunnel. You can also make out in the bottom picture a support mount off the tunnel for the seats.

Some more detail shots of the seats, very comfy they are too!

Another one of my ideas was to fit a vertical bar to the door exactly in place of where the stock quarter light would be, the idea being once the bar was chromed it would from the outside resemble a stock quarter light...

I'm pretty pleased with how they came out, they should look cool once they are chromed!

Everything is fully Tig welded..Nice!

And finally the all important chassis builders tag. We're incredibly proud of this  :)

Well it was another mission today to get some work done on the car! After last sunday at Chris' we dropped the A Arms off to Wayne Allman to get narrowed and being the guy that he is, they were done and ready to go Wednesday night! My best friend Adie Harper kindly picked them up for us and we finally got them this morning! They have been narrowed a total of 1" per side and Wayne has done an absolutey cracking job as usual. Once we had picked up the A Arms at 6am this morning we drove down to Peter at Cogbox to pick up a gearbox casing which we could be used for mock up. From Pete's we then headed over to Chris' 'shop and got everything fitted up, but not before nipping to Harry Harpics and picking up a split bus nosecone which we needed! Pics below!

As you can see the bearing carrier was cut out and repositioned the maximum of an inch further in giving us more clearence on the rear.

We arrived at Chris' to find our 4cm wider rear wings had arrived from CSP which we got a cracking deal through Micheal at Machine 7. You can tell here that they are wider but once everythings all button'd up and painted they should look a treat.

Chris also made a really cool bracket to house the staging brake right next to the shifter, loving this!

He had also fitted our custom Simpson Window net..

After that we got cracking and fitted the gearbox and engine, that was a cool sight to see  :)

We then fitted up the A Arms and brakes and bolted a wheel and wing up for mock up! Really pleased with the results! So all in all we had a good day! The car is due back to us in less than 2 weeks from Chris', I can't wait!

Steve

I've got to say guys, your car is looking absolutely superb! And you are ahead of me.........  ;)

I have got same same rear wings (CSP from M7) and I agree they do look very good considering how much wider they are. I have modified mine to fit on dzus fasteners, so the mounting lip has gone- which gave me a chance to narrow them very slightly so the wheel sits in just right.

I am liking what you are doing alot. I feel the need to go and mock-assemble mine again today!

I am still waiting for the trans and shifter from the states......  ::)

Thanks Jonny, The next step is Dzus fasteners on the rear wings, we just had to make sure they fit first, as we had originally had day moulding ones!

It a good job we dry assembled the rear end as we had to do quite a bit more work on the luggage area for clearence of the gearbox.  :) Things we need to know NOW and not when its painted as we will not be left with enough time to do a full dry mock up

Looks like you`ll make the deadline at this rate ;D

Well the car came home this weekend! So I have a few photo's ;) I'm still amazed at the work on the car and we're like kids in a sweet store when we work on it!!

As it come off the trailer yesterday..

Today I managed to spend a full day on the car mocking things up and just generally checking it out!!

This is back of the T handle on the decklid (which needs metal work I know!) The handle hasn't been cut down and also it gives a resting point on the valance so when the dzus fasteners are removed the decklid doesn't come flying off! I did forget to get a decent picture of the decklid fitted though!

The dzus fittings for the decklid, it stands the decklid off nicely!

Rear view of the valance, you can see the mounting points for the decklid and also the dzus fasteners for holding the valance on..

The dzus fasteners which act as support brackets for the rear valance. The set-up is really strong and there is no movement from the rear end.

The rear valance is bolted to the wings on the side which then allows the whole rear end to come off like so, its really quick and easy to remove which is good.

Instead of welding tabs onto the body Chris made this strip which is bolted the body along with the wing beading and then of course the wings are dzus fastened onto this! The main reason for this was to not have to mess about with the wing beading everytime the wings came off. Really pleased with how this came out.

To the front and the fibreglass bonnet has also been dzus fastened on..

Front end all on..

Some of the things we mocked up today, we decided to mount the MSD and the Painless fuse block under the hood for ease of access.

Looking like a car again! Yes the front end needs narrowing and lowering some more!!

PowderPuff UK headquarters!!

The body should be off for paint next weekend so I have this week to get the other bits mocked up and then while the body is away its time to finish the rolling chassis!

Thanks Matt :) I think it would be pretty cool to see both ours and your car in the flesh finished :D :D Well hopefully we'll be doing shakedown passes around easter thunderball time, we'll probably do some test sessions too so we can get used to the car in a relaxed environment as me especially, haven't gone as quick before as what potentially the car will go! Hopefully the car will be finished in time for Easter so we'll probably enter that though as we would be there anyway!

The body goes off to the body shop on Sunday and there is still lots of mocking up to do  :o :D

Well this week I have been really busy getting the rest of the things mocked up as the body is off to Martin Curbishly's tomorrow for paint! The bonnet has been drilled to accept the bonnet handle and all the trim and the rear wings have been drilled in the correct position for the tail lights. The doors have both now been 'lightened' and the inner frame cut for a 1 one piece window amongst other things! A few pics below..

The offending item which needed to be cut, thanks for the tip Ben ;)

And this is the end result, just a little bit of tidying up and its good to go! You can just make the holes in the door I have drilled to help lighten it. Once the door card is fitted the holes will not be seen!

I was also able to trial fit the Aeromotive fuel pump and filter after finally ordering the proper billet mount for it! I was originally planning on running the pump under the tank on the bulkhead but there wasn't enough room! Plus this way there is easy access if there is a problem!

Tomorrow Spencer will be round in the morning with the enclosed trailer and the body will be off for paint at last!

Nice work. What was the tip Ben gave you about cutting the doors? I'm gonna have to do that soon. Also what flow rate does that pump give? I'm looking at fuel pumps at the moment.

Hi Ant,

Tip from Ben was to use a hacksaw to cut out those pieces!

As for the fuel pump it has a flow rate of over 90 gph, on advise from Aeromotive is good enough for engines producing 200 to 600bhp. Our whole fuel system is Aeromotive, certainly not cheap but well worth it :)

Well yes all was going a bit too well  :( I hit a major snag today, with the body off I just thought i'd check the ride height again and it turns out that the A Arm catches the shock tower coming off the torsion tube  :'( I need 2" clearence so I'm a bit stuck at the mo! I've spoken to Chris and he thinks the A Arm might be able to be cut into and a gusset added to re-strengthen it. Bugger! I'll put a picture up in a mo when I download them off my camera.

So this is what we're up against!

Wayne and Chris are both looking at it and seeing what ideas they can come up with, I'm not sure what can and can't be done with regards to keeping the strength..  :-[

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: WhiteTrash on December 18, 2008, 00:02:30 am
Steve

What sort of shocks were you plannin on fitting with your trailing arms heigh up like that?
Surly at this angle your axle shafts are running up from gearbox to stubaxle, constantly angling the cv's which makes them more prone to fail.

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on December 18, 2008, 00:10:29 am
I'm planning on running coilovers.. Basically the photo's on the previous page with it sitting nicely, I measured the ride height from the centre of each shock eye hole, which measured 12", and its only when the body was off I had a good look at it  :-[ Its the ride height I want to run at as I don't like high rear end back ends on racecars!

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: WhiteTrash on December 18, 2008, 00:19:25 am
Your car should't squat down at launch as much as that the arm will hit shocktower, the coilover would bind before that

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on December 18, 2008, 00:26:45 am
Trouble is the measurement of the eye holes when the a arm hits is 12" which is exactly where I want the ride height, and from what I've been told you need 2" of movement on both upwards and downwards direction! Just been speaking to Wayne and thinks the way to go would be to remove the shock tower and fabricate a shock mount, coming off the torsion tube and tied into the frame horn tubes (the ones Chris welded in to to tie the cage in)

If that solved it what about the issue of the CV joints? When the car launches and squats the CV's would move back into a straighter line so would that not help? I no nothing about this sort of stuff so you'll have to forgive all my questions!

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: WhiteTrash on December 18, 2008, 00:44:48 am
Agree with Wayne, if that's were it sits fab some new mounts.

With regards to the axles and CV's, to have them in a relativly straight line at launch when the car squats, they would have to run slightly down from the gearbox to the stubaxle (wheel) when stationary.
I always thought that cv's should ideally run straight, yes their design is to move and still turn, but there wiill be more stress on them angled which in a race car can cause them to lock and then break.
Similar to a prop shoft in a front engined, rear wheel drive car, the UJ's should always be straight to minimise stress.
But please check with some other people who run IRS, ie Cogbox Pete, Richie, Bernie etc

Post by: kev d on December 18, 2008, 11:39:52 am
Hi Steve,

Could the shock tower be notched for 1/2 the clearance you need & the A-arm for the other 1/2 without losing too much strength?
How different are the shock towers on your pan to the towers on an IRS pan?
Cheers,
Kev

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on December 18, 2008, 12:26:19 pm
We thought that but I think it would weaken both parts too much. I think the shock towers on a IRS pan are a totally different shape so shouldn't interfere, perhaps I should have welded on a complete IRS rear when it was first done!

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: Deanodynosaurs on December 18, 2008, 12:45:00 pm
Hi Steve,

Why dont you loose the shock tower all together and mount the top of the shock to a bracket on the cage/ body?

That way you could set the ride height exactly as you want it.

Dude  8)

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: WhiteTrash on December 18, 2008, 12:49:45 pm
yes the shock towers on later floorpans are different.
they lean slightly outwards and are shaped different plus have the little pan for the bumpstop to hit in them. Were you planning on running any or have you cut the pedestal of the arms?

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: RhoadsVW on December 18, 2008, 19:12:28 pm
That irs arm angle looks horrible,if you are more concerned with looks you are in trouble :o  ideally with the car at a standstill you want the axle angle slightly lower at the outer end so on launch it straightens itself giving the cv as little angle as possible,as it looks there they will already be over center and just get worse/weaker.
Its quite normal to notch the shock tower but it isnt designed to take a coil over anyway and will flex without being tied into the cage.

One solution would be to cut off the early shock mounts and weld on later style.

Or if you are going to build new shock mounts, perhaps something like how I did mine.

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on December 18, 2008, 23:33:07 pm
Well just after my last post I spoke to Wayne again and we have come up with a plan, he is going to fab some shock towers up from scratch and tie them into the frame horn tubing I have. (Kinda like yours then I guess Mike!) The old towers will be cut off too.

Richie, I know not everyone gets my way of thinking but yes the look of the car is really important to me! So now I've gotta figure out a way of sorting it! So forgive my ignorance but are CV joints by there design meant to be able to run at angles? What are the failures I would see? Before we started the full build of the car I asked questions about ride height and everyone come back to me and said I didn't to do anything like raise the trans and I can just run it low (this included Ron Lummus) so I'm a bit stuck!

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: richie on December 19, 2008, 02:56:11 am
The greater the angle the weaker it will get,you may find the limit of the bus size cv a lot sooner than you would like, they are desinged to work in an angle but only with about 65hp and not with the shock loads it will see when adele launches ;D They seem to usually bind and then something breaks, mainly the cage in the middle, stronger chromoly ones are available to help with this. The easiest way to lower the car without this is to raise the torsion housing instead of the irs arm but you will proberly find nthing else will clear if you do it now.

cheers richie,uk

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on December 20, 2008, 10:57:25 am
I had a bit of a play yesterday  but until the body is back on the shell I can't gauge the ride height, but by dropping the arm 1/2" the axle sits totally straight so a touch more and it will drop the axle 'downwards'. I'm going to see if Wayne can fab up a new shock mount of the A Arm too so I can run a slightly longer coilover which means I can have a bit more adjustment for the ride height and hopefully see what I can come up with!

So it may seem I would have to move up to bigger CV joints sooner than we thought if they breaking as the 930's can run at a bit more of an angle!

Guys,

what is your quick-release steering wheel arrangement? Where did you get all the components and what machine work had to be done to the column?

After fitting up my MSE V Gate (which is lurvely!  :)) I really have quite a job getting in and out of my car as I have a Kirkey seat with the rib protector bits in. I reckon a removable steering wheel will really help so was thinking of looking into it a bit more.....

Any help would be appreciated!  :)

Cheers,

Its all Mark Williams stuff which Chris Isaacs supplied, its really nice!!

The wheel is a Momo 80 which is the 6 stud pattern, I then fitted a 6 stud to 3 stud adapter (as most fly off wheel adapters are 3 stud) and gave it to chris with the car..

I think this is the MW adapter Chris supplied..

You also need a spline adapter which welds onto the stock steering shaft..

This is with it welded into our steering shaft

Its a really nice bit of kit, it has a 'master spline' too so you will always line your wheel up straight too.

Thanks Steve. I am probably going to go for a MOMO wheel and WTCC boss. What mods did you do to the column 'tube', as I notice it now bolts to the bar below the dash on your car. Did you use the existing tube and bearing housing etc? If you have any photos of this area it would be much appreciated.

Title: Re: My new car for next year......

Hi Jonny,

Yes it is the existing stock steering tube which has had a aluminium insert made for the steering shaft to slide into and then the 'bracket' is welded onto the steering tube and bolts through the dash bar. It's probably just me but it feels really nice and more secure than the stock mounting position!

Thats about the best picture I have, I could get some more when I next visit the paintshop if you need some!

Quick update, I went up to see Martin today and took a few pics of the panels in colour!

None of the panels have been polished yet so the paint is straight from the gun, I'm quite pleased! Martin has also started painting the exterior of the shell tonight.  ;D

The pan was sent to Wayne's last weekend and should be back sometime next week with the new shock towers fabricated and mid mount welded in. I ordered a pair of rear Coilovers from GAZ shocks today too, spoke with them at the Autosport show and I liked what I saw and heard! Got a good deal on them!

Great colour !!!

I loved the car up untill now, but was so afraid of how the paint would turn out. With it being so high-tech and modern, you could have chosen fluorescent kamikaze green. That would have been highly recognisable on the strip, but equally highly dissapointing.

Get it built and driven before EBI3, but please don't crash it!

Thanks, It was always going to be this colour because we wanted to keep it as original as possible, which is also why we didnt cut all the rear luggage area out and tried to have the welding done to factory standards. OK, its never going to be what it was back then, but i personally wanted to keep something 'original' on it and i think we have just about achieved it. Its not the most stunning colour in the world but definetly suits :)

Just been perving your build photo's and noticed this!

Make sure you use nyloc nuts, rather than normal nuts as they have a tendency to vibrate loose! Especially in cars with solid gearbox mounts!

I know! All the bolts actually fell out on my gearbox mount during a run!!  ;D

We decided to take a break for the weekend from working on the car so I thought I'd update the thread! This is where we are at with the 'pan at the moment, by the end of the week it should be rolling as we have all the parts back that we needed last week.

I've started to plumb the brake lines in that I can, all out of teflon/braided steel, I'm finding it much easier and nicer to work with but a tad more expensive  :o

Oh the body is also now fully painted and it's due back next weekend  ;D We've decided not to post pictures of the body until after the debut as it's more fun that way  ;)

Hi Steve/Adelle. Looking absolutely fab guys! Love the work 8)

Just an observation... Are the button head Allen screws you are using on the spring plates and torsion bar end caps stainless steel? If so, they are not rated for suspension use and could very likely shear! Little bit difficult to see whether they are stainless from your pix, but they need to be 12.9 grade tensile steel. Stainless is a big no-no for any suspension component that sees high load forces as it is quite brittle. Keep up the superb work 8)

Don't go stainless on brake calipers etc. as well !

Fantastic pan ! (DROOL)

The bolts are grade 8.8 which I thought would be suitable?! The caliper bolts are what's supplied by Strange so there all good!

8.8s are just general mid-tensile (still called high-tensile, though...) bolts for general automotive applications. All suspension components that see shear loadings require 12.9 grade bolts. All original VW bolts that were used for suspension parts are 12.9 grade. Even the bolts that hold the front axle to the frame head are 12.9. Caliper bolts must be this grade, too, as pointed out in an above post. 8.8 wont cut the mustard on your race car. They may well work fine for a while, but there is the underlying factor that they could shear, as they are not up to the job. I realise many people bolt up their suspension with nice shiny 8.8s thinking they are doing the car a favour, but the reality is that it is dangerous in the long run. Best to be on the safe side guys ;)

We picked up the stub axles, front brake caliper and bracket over the weekend so I couldn't help myself getting it rolling today! I've still got loads to do and the 'pan is already back up on jack stands but it was nice to see it outside on wheels for the first time  :)

I went to Volksworld, and this was one of the reasons to go. I am not dissapointed, for me this was one of the best cars on show. It is not my cup of tea, but then I'm not into full on race cars, but the subtlety of this car rocks. Combined with finishing to a high standard and a really funny cage (lovely coice of color for it) it is a great car. I even think the wheels fit the theme, any other wheel (brm, erco, burners ...) would have made it common.

And now post some pics for others to enjoy !!!

Hi Steve/ Adele!

I know i've heard a lot about the car during the build, but when i saw the finished result i was blown away! The car is absolutly stunning! :) :)

It looks amazing! Sutle but purposefull! I even think the wheels work which i was initially not very sure about!  :P ;D

I loved the small detail bits like the guauges in the glove box with the chrome trim cut to match to them!  :)

I'm so painting my car the same colour!  ;D

Dude  8)

P.S. Sorry i didnt get to see you Steve.  :( The day just disapeared! I'll give you a call during the week!  :)

:) Thankyou all for your kind comments, it really does make it all worthwhile. It was a major stress getting the car done in time for the show but I'm sure glad we did!  ;D ;D

Because we were so busy with the car I never got to post about a sponsor we picked up, Direct Plastics - www.directplasticsonline.co.uk (http://www.directplasticsonline.co.uk). Thanks to Paul Woodhead he supplied us with all the Lexan windows for the car and they are awesome!

Thankyou also to Stoo, Jamie Billau, and Wayne Allman who in the last 2 weeks helped us out so much we wouldn't have been able to finish it in time  :)

Ant those photo's are awesome, thanks!!

Ok...

Good News... Motor started first time, Float bowls filled up, Good Oil pressure sounds pretty cool!!

Bad News.. One of the welded fuel fittings on the left pisses out fuel!! We cant fix it here but Wayne should be able too when he does the other bits next week hopefully! Also Still not quite got gears  ??? were working on the brakes now and then back to the gears!

 :)

Brief, and not great Video but you get the idea! At the mo we have run it up on C16 as we had no time to get C12.

"Martined" Does that mean: take a perfectly good running carburettor to pieces and mess around with it until it is fubar?   ;D ;D ;D ;

On a lighter note: Great work Adelle and Steve, can't wait to see the car on the track soon ;) matt

I love this race car, it looks so right. The combination of a stock body to thinly disguise what is an awesome race chassis does it for me!! The colour is spot on too, reminds me of a white early sixties US race bug that was featured in Volksworld a long long time ago ,that had a monster IDA motor for the strip and a slightly detuned motor for the road, could it be Adam Wies or something like that??

I have to beg to differ here. You say 'fixing' his own car. By this you mean pulling the carb off at least ten times at a race meet and completely fooking up the jetting just for the sakes of it. God only knows what would happen if Boom Boom went darkside and switched to EFI  :o

Did you manage to get it to Shakeys for some runs in the end?

Well, its time for the car to go on a diet, and seeing as we cant remove any more metal from it, its up to me instead!!  :o  7lbs(3.5kgs) down in 12 days and now only..... 33lbs to go!

I said i would loose the equivelant weight of the cage being chromoly which is a difference of 40 lbs  ;D

Hi Adele/Steve,
Im looking at going lexan window on the oval, Does your door glass slide up and down or is it fixed?
How have you fitted them in the door?
Lee

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on June 06, 2009, 23:41:34 pm
Hey Lee! Go lexan!!! Yeah ours is fixed as I didn't want the weight of a quarter light or window winders! Stoo did us a template of his one piece window and we cut the lexan to that size and then just screwed in a couple of self tappers through the door and lexan. Works a treat! If you need lexan speak to Paul Woodhead and he'll sort you out with the coated lexan, much nicer than ordinary stuff! www.directplasticsonline.co.uk (http://www.directplasticsonline.co.uk)

Hi,
Thanks for the tip. Could you show me a couple of pics of where the window is screwed to the door?
Also, would Paul be able to do a rear 'o'val' window in lexan?
Lee

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on June 07, 2009, 11:24:05 am
I just used 2 holes where the door cards fit, there secured in lots of other places so missing 2 wasn't a problem! I predrilled the holes in the lexan first through those holes then just got a couple of self tappers and a washer each and screwed them in! Paul supplied us just the lexan and we then cut it to size. Use a jigsaw with a wood blade, sounds crazy but it's the best blade to cut it with. The rear window on ours was a right ballache to fit but I think the oval should be alot easier. Is the window flat or is it curved? The 59 is curved horizontally and vertically hence making it a pain in the ass.

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: leec on June 07, 2009, 13:39:01 pm
Cool,
The glass oval screen was a right pain, so lexan may be easier :o
Thanks Steve,
Lee

;D Thanks Udo!

How does it work with a sponsor like NGK? Are they just supplying you with plugs or pay towards the entry fees etc.

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on April 07, 2010, 09:23:36 am
Well it's been a while so I thought i'd update it a little!

It's been an awesome year with the car, a few awards, 2 runners up and a win, championship win, 3 magazine features and an amazing online feature so overall we're pretty happy  ;D ;D Oh and Adele's PB dropped to 11.401 at 116mph and on another pass the MPH PB changed to 117mph  ;D ;D ;D

I guess we didn't think we'd get hooked on going faster and faster so quickly so there are a few things we would have done differently had we known but at the end of the day we wouldn't of changed anything given the amount of fun we've had!

We've had a few plans for this season but at the moment we're trying to think sensible and keep the costs down so we have upgraded to EFi power which will allow us more options for the future..

Richie Webb rebuilt/refreshed the engine replacing the usual but with a change of cam and lifters from the CB items to an Engle FK89 and Scat lifters.

We then decided to convert from Carbs to EFi with a kit from the Über talented Marco Mansi. Marco was kind enough to come over to our house for a few days and install it for us..

The throttle bodies are single body Mikuni's taken from a Suzuki motorbike with custom connecting linkages, stock 440cc injectors, custom fuel rail and custom hand made velocity stacks.

The ECU is an MS2 from Megasquirt which Marco has had great results with and complete faith so while there may be other systems on the market having one that you know and trust is always good!

For the crank trigger I sent Marco my new pulley from JayCee which he then cut in half, laser cut the rear section for the timing marks (36 minus 1) then a steel insert added and finally bolted back together, alot of work but it sure looks nice!

The actual trigger sensor is mounted on the case with a custom block as you can see in the photo below. The coil is a an MSD item and is located in the stock dizzy location by means of a machined piece of ally that slides into the dizzy location (with the drive removed) a plate then bolts to it and the coil is bolted to the plate. It makes for a really tidy set-up!

The throttle linkage is a custom cable unit and works superbly, hard to explain so I'll get a picture of it and post it up!

For fueling we had to change to an EFi pump so the old one was sold off and a new Aeromotive 700hp pump was fitted, the existing regulator was able to be utilised with just changing the pressure spring inside and a new pressure gauge. We have however since realised we need to change our fuel line into the pump for a bigger line as the pump draws so much fuel!

So last week we managed to get the car to a local dyno so Marco could fully map it. We spent a day at home getting the basic map right first and then at the dyno it was the final tune. We made about 10 or so runs on the dyno having to cool the engine in between each run and on the last pull the motor made 196hp at the wheels which we are really pleased about. So we think the motor is making more power than last year  ;D Marco did a fantastic job on the EFi and we would wholeheartedly recommend this kit (and Marco!) if you are interested in going EFi.

So this is the completed engine..

We should be out for the first race meet in April/May and we can't wait!

Looking REALLY good! Interesting to see that I`m not the only one going from junk IDA carbs to EFI.  :)

;D From what I have seen so far i'm loving EFi! The motor sounds awesome and rev's so much more freely from idle all the way up to redline with no hesitation. Being able to datalog is also very cool and Adele is really geeking out on that!

Any other changes to the engine compared to last year? Same fuel? And what functions do you log? And where is the nitrous kit?  :) I guess you should be able to make a really clean NOS install with the Efi since you can get away with a dry system.

Post by: SteveW on April 07, 2010, 10:06:42 am
No other real changes to the engine other than all the cooling has gone as you can see, the fuel will be the same, VP C12 leaded fuel although for the dyno runs we ran it up on Sunoco 109 unleaded so as we didn't damage the guys lambda sensor!

We are not going to go nitrous at the moment, although that was the reason initially for going EFI. If we can afford it we'd like to go with some new heads like the CB's Strip Dominator and try for a 10 Normally Aspirated as it's still 'my thing' !

The main logs at the moment are AFR, RPM, Throttle Position, Oil Temp, Air Temp and Fuel Pressure, there are more things we can monitor but there the main ones at the mo..

Thanks Kalle, very chufted with it! We suspected it was making more power than previously and it just runs so much smoother too! Really pleased we've converted to EFI! The track was quite marginal too so it will be nice to run it on a race prepped track (Altough to be honest I said I'd be over the moon if it went 11.2 anytime so I'm really happy!)

I thought it was about time to update this thread. We had a mixed season with the car, the engine performed faultlessly but it was hit and miss with the rear suspension and tyre pressure settings which was frustrating but we did manage a PB of 11.23 and i think there was a little more in it too. Unfortunately at the end of August after a very successful trip to SCC we were back in the UK racing and Adele crashed at over 100mph due to track related issues :( The car took a hard left turn at about 1000ft spinning backwards into the armco. Adele was unhurt in the accident but obviously the car sustained some damage. After assessing the damage it really isn't bad with the car body. The rear fenders and valance were destroyed and engine and 'box cases are dead but everything still turns over so hopefully most of the internals are ok. There is very little needed bodywork wise so we have turned it into a positive and started to implement the next step with the car!

The rear luggage area is being cut away and tinned, the rear end is now going to be narrowed with custom A Arms built to give us more adjustability and suspension movement. It will also allow us to stuff a 8.5" slick under stock fenders! ;) :D

As some of you know we made a last minute decision to fly out to So-Cal to visit our friends and go to the Vegas bugorama! We had a great week or so chilling out and ordering parts! We have decided to go with a hydraulic pedal set-up so ordered a nice Jamar set-up custom made for us and a Jamar staging to brake to match! (Replacing the CNC one we had)

We also bought some new rear wheels as our Erco's were damaged beyond repair, we decided on some Billet Specialties Street Lite 15x8". There a nice looking wheel which is SFi rated and half the price of the Weld or American Racing we were going to buy! We are also upgrading to a bus box and so I started on the 930 CV set-up buying the stub axles to start mock-up. (Thanks to Beanie from Vee Dub parts for these and the Jamar parts)

So that's where we are at the moment. We'll be working hard to get it rebuilt so I guess I'll be updating this thread more often!!

What size were you running before? If you can go for the CV joint with the chromoly cage and if your feeling 'flush' go with the race lightened ones to reduce the rotating weight. Although I always swore I wouldn't use any Empi parts the stub axles and CV joints are really good :)

I thought i would update this thread somewhat and post some pictures. I make no secret of the fact that we will not be out racing again until we are ready to run single digits, for me its all or nothing this time, no half measures  :) and the car will be ready for it. Everything we need is now in place for this to happen, so its a case of not rushing, but biding our time. We hope to be out September time to do some testing

I have decided to post a couple of pics now because i have dealt with what happened and mainly so you can see how well the car held up, its real testament to Mr Allman and Mr Isaacs :) It just goes to show what couldof happened had this not of been the case. Re-running the detailed crash footage we have, i was up on two wheels when i was going sideways!

Best thing of it all however is that the engine has been fully stripped down and is fine, everything has checked out ok and the case half has has been sorted and it will be up for sale very soon :)

This is where the right manifold/throttle body got pushed into the firewall

Indeed. And not to forget the extra down force they apply that would help grip and high speed stability. In other words:  s a f e t y

Quite right - I'm of the firm opinion that the sideplates play a huge role in the effectiveness of a wing, possibly even more than the downforce issue. To my way of thinking, the sideplates keep the air passing over the car in a straight line, therefore keeping the back of the car straighter at speed. What do you reckon?

I have never had the power to go so fast that I have felt the need for wing. But I look at it this way: our cars are (just like the PV in the movie) is formed like a wing. When you increase your speed they start to lift and this is also confirmed by those that datalog the shock travel. The car is higher going over the line at top speed than what it is standing still. I believe that whatever you can do to force it down is good and a wing is one way of doing it. The other way is to modify the front but that will kill the looks.

More than anything, the side plates, as you call them (actually known as 'spill plates'), work by stopping air spilling off the sides, thus improving the efficiency of the spoiler. This way you can run a smaller spoiler (which creates less drag) without sacrificing downforce.

A further way to improve a typical VW Pro-Stock=style spoiler is to add a Gurney flap along the underside of the trailing edge.

Is it a case of breaking the lift, or causing down force to counteract the lift?
I have always had the feeling that the bugs gets lighter in the nose when the speed increases.
Is it lifting in both ends?

According to those that monitor the shock travel - yes.

Well seeing as pictures and details of Richie's new car have been revealed I thought we might aswell reveal our little secret in that our new powerplant will be indeed Richie's 4" bore motor with JPM heads! :D

Since the last update on here very little has happened on the car, we decided to have a little break and come back refreshed and it's really worked. I've spent the last couple of evenings in the workshop doing odd little bits and i'm loving it again! We are still waiting for workshop space at Wayne's but we are working hard and getting other things sorted and we are aiming to be out testing in August. Initially it won't be painted but then if everything checks out we'll paint over the winter :)

We must say a huge thanks to Richie and also Russell for there help so far :)

That new motor is going to make some serious power. Glad to see you have done away with the inverted rear a-arms. The car should handle much better now. You will definitely have to up your rear spring pressure and shock valving to combat the extra engine weight and the power on launch. It would be wise to have two or three pairs of springs (going up maybe 50 lbs at a time) to test at the track. I have found that whenever I turn up the boost/launch rpm a little, the rear spring rate needs upping. Hope this little snippet helps you guys dial her in. Can't wait to see you guys back on the track 8) Matt

Title: Re: My new car for next year......
Post by: SteveW on May 29, 2011, 23:20:20 pm
Well the car always ran straight, never had any issues at all, the launches were just weird and I think it was down to the shock set-up so I think we're going to run a pair of double adjustable's. Yeah there's going to be lots of testing needed for the new rear end!

Slightly cheating on the pic, but stock wings this time.. think it will make a big difference to the look.

You seem to have a big hole in your Arse  ;D
No seriously looking good Adele , are you going to cut and Raise the whole of the rear fork's / torsion tube for the IRS or just run a raised engine mount ?
Std wing looks good thow I think the colour's a little off .
Looking good Glenn

Bit of an update..

A arm in the making, the bearing housing is cut from a stock VW IRS arm so bearings are easily available and I can use my existing RLR/Strange brakes.

3/4 built arms

Locating mounts tacked into position for mock up

Not sure on final ride height yet..

Wow they look great! Are they by Wayne Allman? Looks like its going to sit well, and I agree on the wings it will look tons better on stockers imho.

Nice!

:)

:) yeah Wayne's doing it all. I think it's about 10" total narrower than stock in order to fit the 8.5" slick under a stock wing!

I love them! Nice to see Wayne's approach - zero camber change through the suspension ark is defo the way forward for drag cars. 8) He's a clever chap, our Wayner 8)

Another quick update below. Gearbox is now in for the mock up, along with some more tubing. Note that part of the rear cage has been removed (The part that bolted to the luggage panel and frame horns) to allow for more room and for a better way for Wayne to now tie all the rear end in. :)

It will be have to go back to Waynes for the tinwork so there are a couple of strengthening tubes to be added which will be done once the engine and turbo etc is all in place. New shorter shocks are also needed!

That's looking fantastic guys!  8)

How is the position of the lower spring/shock mount calculated?

On Matt's we had to point the bottom of the spring/shock almost through the center line of the axle. Before that when it was further forward the forces acting upon it were too great when launching. The rear end squatted far too much and it bent upper mounts.

I'm guessing Wayne knows what he's doing though!

More updates for anyone who is interested. Brakes have now all been re-plumbed, we opted for stainless hard line this time round instead of braided flexi lines. Hydraulic clutch and pedals all in place and plumbed too. Also installed the new Aeromotive A1000 fuel pump and filters and we are still using our -6 return line but have now gone for -10 main fuel line which i spent the day routing it on the car. Engine is also in place as a long block, some work needs to be done on the header to make it fit with the new rear end also.

Looking great Adele... first off... carpet in the garage!? How flash are you guys  ;D ;D

What header are you running Adele? Will you still be running full cooling? I'm looking at getting an over the 'box header at some point and am looking for a supplier....

Cheers

Hey Jamie, carpert is ace to work on! We have it in our home garage too (we're at a friends at the mo).

The header is being made as nothing off the shelf will fit. I've just bought some mild steel bends off ebay for £9.50 each so not too bad really. The seller name is tube-fabs on ebay. Yeah full cooling, having raced last year without it I'm looking forward to less pushing and also driving back from the top instead of having to go fetch her with the quad!

Sounds comfy Steve! Have to upgrade my workshop too :D

Is Wayne going to buzz that up for you as well Steve? I can't weld to save my life  :D so could do with just kind of 'giving ' the job to someone....

CHeers for the info!
Jamie

Well we had the 'old' header Richie had made, so at first we were hoping to use it as is but the new rear end meant we couldn't. The solution was to cut and re-work the header to make it fit! Richie did it all at his workshop as he has access to a Tig welder. If you can tack your one together i'm sure Wayne or someone like that will tig it up.

The bends I bought today are now not needed as we managed to use every part from the old header so if you need a few bends i'll have 3 for sale!!

No doubt some of you are wondering where this car went,

I bought this car off Steve and Adelle late last year and shipped it down here to NZ. The plan is a 2.7l (84 x 101.6) pauter turbo engine (Marty Staggs is building it), Bus box (Dave Folts) and the same goal, run a single digit. The car really exceeded all my expectations, a real credit to the previous owners !! The border inspectors were drooling when I went to pick the car up !!

Outside of the engine and box, I need to change the seating, Im 6'5", so I can get in the car but am too wide across the shoulders to get into the cage, and my head is only a cm or two off the bars in the roof. So the easy solution would be to get rid of the seats and floor mount a couple of kirkeys, but... I dont feel like we would be doing the car justice, so we have decided to cut out the seat pans in the hope that dropping them down 6" will get me fitting between the bars, then remake the seat bases to be as close to the original seats as we can.

Ill update this as we make progress...
