I think red is better on an upright headlight model.

You english only drink half pints.....

Really?  :D

Half pints you say?

Oh, I've got it,  you mean the half pints we drink two at a time in one big glass?

And is it not true that we English (I say English although I myself had a Scottish grandfather.) are still drinking them long after you slope off to bed nursing your headache... ;D

Can you imagine Mel Gibson - sorry,  William Wallace sliding off to nurse his Buckfast induced headache instead of fighting at Falkirk?

Well see you at Sandown or anywhere else!  ;D

Also i think it might be a little plain with nothing between the big ones - thanks for the input though dude  :)

Not planning on window wipers are we?? You do live in the UK, right??? ;) I dont think those 3 gauges in the center will clear the motor...
Also, is that a dome light I spy all the way over to the right??? I doubt that will do you much good in that position... except blind you when you're getting in and out of the car ;)
I dont mean to come off as an ass, just trying to help you build a practical machine ;)

Hmmmm good point about the wiper motor - I will have to check the clearence - I think I might be ok as these 3 gueages are fairly shallow  ;) :)

And yep that is a VW interior/dome light over on the right - I know its not the IDEAL position but it will light up the footwell area as I climb in  ;) :)

hey that looks good to me, but i reallydepends on the steeringwheel you want to use. if it is a smaller one it will blind the 2 bigger clocks. and that would be a shame.
and the domelight does fill it up a bit too much for my liking as well.  :-\

otherwise:

The interior light was abit of an after thought so that might not stay and after chatting with Shubee/Gary I do have another mock up in mind but I will let you know on that one  ;) :)

And don't worry there will be plenty of "idiot lights" and square "rocker sitches"  ;) :)

Put the interior light under the dash beneath the radio. It is out of the way, and still provides some light.

I think the dash is a bit too cluttered, TBH. I would lose the radio (or mount it under the ashtray section) and move the two small centre gauges to the outside of the  larger ones. Drop the three gauges under the wiper motor a bit so you'll have:

glovebox : small : small : small : small : large : large : small
             :    rocker switches  :

Right Guys its time to get this thread going again  ;) :)

I will be making a start on the body work soon and I really need some "hints & tips" on removal and replacement of the
Rear luggage area/bulkhead and the front Bulkhead.

Also any info about repairing the rear window area would also be handy - oh yeah and of course tips on welding up all 49 trim holes  ;) :)

One last thing please check this thread  ;) :)

Thanks for the help guys  :)

get yourself a spot weld drill bit, use this to drill out all the spot welds and the panels will just fall off, with a little help from a cutting disc.

Rear window - I would look to find another person who is scrapping their car, and cut these portions off, bare metal them etc and then weld in.

I need to do this to the bottom right (as you look at it).

Title: Re: PROJECT 66 :)
Post by: Lee.C on May 25, 2008, 12:55:27 pm
Cheers dude - I was thinking I would need a spot weld drill bit - where do you get these?

And as for the rear window area - the window frame is fine its the area/panel BELOW the window (as per normal  ::))

I will be removing the "Vent" panel in the engine bay so I will be able to get a better look at this area then  :)

i got mine from my local motor factors, but i know frost sell them.  the vent panel can be drilled out, this was lyndon did on his old car, he then screwed it back so he always had access.

SSP sell the rear boot floor, not sure whats the best for other panels, look at autocraft, Wolf and then NOS.

If you want so save yourself a LOT, and I mean a LOT, of work... skip the spot weld drill.
They are meant for removing panels that you want to keep... you are out for the opposite result, as you what to keep one of the panels untouched, and couldn't care less about the other panel. What I like to do in these situations is to cut away the panel you want gone with a cutting disk, as close to the "flange" as possible. And then I grind away the flange with a sanding disk on the angle grinder, if you do it very careful you can remove the flange with minimal damage to the rest of the body. When the metal you are grinding turns blue you are almost there.  :P

Dude,

I welded up the trim holes on my mates '54 - no prior experience!

Is not so tough, and my top tip is get a mate to hold a 2p piece behind the hole you are welding up, works a treat! :)

Good luck!

sounds like a good plan KS.this car reminds me of an oval or split that was featured in one of the first issues of volksworld all those years ago.it was porsche guards red with a black golde ragtop, detailed fuchs with no bumpers and the bumper holes welded up.it was a british car but i cant remember who owned it ??? i think it ran a porsche horizontal fan as well

I remember it - Phil Anning's oval. Think it was a RHD '54. Ivan and I had a conversation on another forum a couple of years ago about it! I loved it but Ivan pointed out some of the not so great bits like the mirrors! The overall look was right though. Made a great impression on me anyway!  ;)

A friend of mine called me yesterday and said he was going to Goodwood tomorrow - sadly I couldn't go as we've got a lot on and a deadline!  EBI - two shows this weekend - a four day week next week then Bug Jam... Anyway, he told me he was going in his new Porsche. I asked him what he'd bought and he got as far as saying 'A Guards Re... I'd put the phone down before he finished the word!

lay off the chimaybeer Lee! that buscolour is a big nono. it just doesn't have that extra though that the porsche has...
and if we talk green porshes, i like this one, but it is different...

BTW that metallic green has my vote, but i just wouldn't paint my car a metallic colour again... but that said i always end up picking a metallic colour.

The second metallic color looks great in that pic, but the metallics might look a little too much like a LaGrande 70s Bug.

Hmmm well......... The "original" car ment for this project was sold to "Robthemanx" before I left the uk and I think its becoming a Baja  :o :)

I am still planning on building a Cal Looker (hopefully within the next year!) and I still have a soft spot in my heart for a 66 BUT now I have this  ;) http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,16494.0.html

OK just to be honest and I appreciate I may get a "flaming", but to be honest I wasn't involved with the outcome...

So, I'm not sure what Rob did with the bodyshell, I'm pretty sure someone has restored it?

But anyway I bought the shortened pan with a new shell on and it now looks like this. It should be ready for Bug Jam.
