Title: match painted trim
Post by: Diederick/DVK on November 18, 2007, 23:45:54 pm
as some may already know the idea has been playing around in my mind for a while now...
i'm not too sure about installing a chrome trim but then there is no way back to dechroming.

now, i could match paint the trim in java green. in some way it may sort of give me the look of dirk's cool 67 - apart from the fact that i will either be java green of chrome.

but has it been done before? does anyone have any pictures of the results?
how far should i go? trim, VW logo, handle, indicators, headlight rings?
and would it look any good?

this what were working with :

How about blacked out trim? I think that'd look good against the green. ;)

yes black could work and the headlightrims painted green as well. that could work out nice, certainly have a good look with those rims, if you plan on keeping them.

In my Opinion,

Painting your Trim, Logos and Grills Javagreen will look seriously Ugly... ;)

If you want to paint it, paint it Black...

But the best Idea would be to put the Chrome back On... ;D ;D ;D

Hi, nice brown car  :D

I think javagreen will look good at the flashers and the trim of the front lamps, make a test with a Lampring and a flashercap, thats easier as you think!
The rest of the chrome-parts looking better in black, also easy to paint.... (Better is powder-coating)

My two cents...

thanks for the posts!

i can't really picture the looks with black trim yet. but i could hand paint an indicator cap and headlight ring (don't have the rings yet though) and see how that looks. but about the indicators, it has also crossed my mind to get rid of those again.

also, i can get my hands on some extra trims to play around with. and yes powdercoating would look better as well.

but then what should i do with the VW logo, the handle and mirror for example?

I would Powdercoat the Mirror, the Grills and the VW Logo Black...

Painting the trim is for guys who didnt shave it in the first place, and now regret it! ;D

Its too late, just leave the chrome chrome!

Well, to be honest I was thinking about the same thing for my late looker project. I'm quite sure about match coloring the headlidght rings, handles and maybe the tops of US spec blinkers. Of course through powdercoating. VW logo I'd replace with a club decal/badge.  In my case things get more complicated through the budget and other things to get done. I've got some metalwork and paint rapairs to do ( It's been 6 years since last respray). The welding I'll done by the welder, but the paint repairs I'm plannig to do by myself. (How hard can it be? :) )
There are some places to fix, so why not to do the dechoming job by the way?

but I'm still not sure about match painting trim and talbot-style mirror. I'd like it to look late, but no too much :)

Black looks better indeed but painting chrome parts with time it will peel off i guess.
You can search for those plastic kinda headlight rings D but like said here i also think green will suck. ;D

I liked the speedwell rendering of the green bug with the 2 liter porsche wheels ;D

yep, you now not only need to see how the trim can be matched, but also look for a new set of rims...  ::)

can you post pictures of the interieur, so we can see if that still matches ?  ;D

i like the green late model in the picture. but it is a quite different green.

There is a home method of decroming stuff with things like:
A bucket with warm water, table salt and a battery changer.

Put the Salt in 10l bucket with warm water the amount of salt will steer the speed of the decroming.Plus of the changer to a thick metall wire which holds the item that will be decromed in the bucket and Minus to any metall thing even inside the bucket.
Energy on, and the chom will flow towards the metall piece.
I havent tried it myself but looks like basic chemistry...

Do it do it, black trim would look how do you say here: "tits"  in my view ;D
I would experiment with the headlightsrings in green or black.

Wow! You have very good eyes!! The somewhat larger building to the left is indeed the rear side of the police station.
If you follow that alley you walk straight to the central station!
