Title: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: henk on March 14, 2023, 19:21:47 pm Hallo,
Do you guys who has early original fuchs wheels like 4,5 or 5,5. Tubes in them or do you ride them tubeless? I have some new 5,5,ride them with tubes. But blow 2 off them in 2 weeks time. Henk!!! Title: Re: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: richie on March 19, 2023, 09:49:17 am Hi Henk
good to see you are posting still :) I don't run tubes in the genuine 4.5s that are on old cab at moment, haven't had deep 6s but wouldn't on them either, never ran tubes in any of the gasburners either and they had a real hard life, well the front ones anyway ;) cheers Richie Title: Re: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: henk on March 19, 2023, 18:00:59 pm Hey Richie,
Thanks for the answer. I have to ask it on the forum,i'm not on facebook or so. Yep,if your front wheels hold whitout inner tubes then that will work for me.😀 Do gasburners also have no saftey bed? Henk!!! Title: Re: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: richie on March 19, 2023, 18:18:36 pm Yes no safety bead on Gasburners
cheers Richie Title: Re: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: jay c on March 19, 2023, 18:32:37 pm I have 4.5 and 5.5 and have always ran tubes as I was told years ago that it was necessary due to the lack of safety bead. I have never have any problems. Also wasn’t aware that it was ok to do so but if Richie has done so then it must be ok. Would you need a special valve or just a regular one?
Title: Re: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: henk on March 19, 2023, 18:47:35 pm I think i depends on the tires.
I have inner tubes in my 4,5 as well and also never had a flat or so. On the 5,5 i have now,i had two innner tubes blown in 2 weeks time. I think the tires i want to use on these wheels don't work well with inner tubes. Gonna give it go tubbeles. Henk!!! I am using bolt in valves on all my wheels, but just because i do it doesn't mean its ok to everyone ;) I think you would have to use bolt in tubes as well rather than stock stuff Also I put the tyres on dry, none of that soap tyre places like to use as i feel it helps stop tyre moving on wheel and reducing chance of it coming off if its dry cheers Richie Title: Re: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: Bruce on March 23, 2023, 04:15:29 am For winter use, I have a pair of original 4.5" Fuchs with 155s and no tubes. Unlike Richie, my wheels are subject to cornering. I gave them no special treatment for lack of tubes. Never a problem.
Safety bead humps: VW went to tubeless tires in 1957, but they didn't add the bead humps until 10 years later, so I don't buy the theory that the two are connected. Porsche made both switches at the same time though. Valve stems to use on early Fuchs are TR-415s, aka the "fatty" since they are larger in dia at the big end than conventional stems. Since the TR-415 stems are designed for steel wheels, the height of the fat end varies from one manufacturer to another. You need ones with the tallest fat end. Richie's worries about the tyre rotating on the wheel is real. Back in the early 90s, one of the rear wheels of my 944 would seem to go out of balance over a couple of weeks. Every time I had it rebalanced, the weights went on in wildly different locations. I suspected the tyre was turning, so I painted a mark on the tyre. Over 3 weeks, I watched the tire move a little bit every day until it was almost 180º from the paint mark. Then it stopped turning. I broke the bead and turned the tyre back to the start and reseated it. It stayed there for good. I think the "bead butter" the tyre busters use was to blame. Title: Re: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: karl h on March 23, 2023, 08:01:29 am i drove original gasburners and 5.5/deep 6 fuchs, all without tubes
i used truck style valves (because of the lenght) Title: Re: Early fuchs/tubes Post by: henk on March 24, 2023, 19:24:07 pm Seems, like there are more people driving them without tubes then with tubes.
So just find the good valves now. Henk!!! |
