Title: Scat Killer case and split port heads?
Post by: Prowagen on November 24, 2007, 15:34:22 pm
Anyone run any setups with these items? There never seems to be much about them, its it because they are not very cost effective and better results are found with more stock based components??

Cheers,
Rob.

A major problem with the heads was that the valves would seize due to insufficient oiling. The only person I know who got them to work in the UK was John Brewster who added an oil spray-bar inside the rocker covers to spray oil directly onto the valve stems. They were a great idea (a damaged head could easily be replaced, for example) but were never developed to their full potential. I believe that Scat was looking at the aviation market when they developed the split-port heads.

Was Brewster running dry or wet sump??
Would it make any difference running a dry sump setup, ie could you incorporate better oiling of the valves?

Possibly looks like conventional heads are the best way.

Ran these heads for several years.
Plus in several different configurations but most miles were with 48IDA.
Never liked the rocker shaft solution but SCAT new development took care of that.
In fact I liked the heads pretty much.
Did my own guides as I ran 5/16" stems and with innerspring guiding plus pressfit outers.
No extra spray cooling. Good idea though for any air cooled engine.
Dropped a Manley valve but it was my own fault. I had a mark on all stems from the lathe. Pretty stupid but I learned and engine was idling. Lucky.
Fixed it and ran at least another year.
But no, I would not buy another set. Too many other better options out there.

Thanks for the info Frallen.

I just picked up a Scat 2442cc motor which has these heads already on it. Now my head is telling me to put my Comp Elmins on but my heart is telling me to use the Split Ports. As this is the motor for my NSU project and I think it will look a lot more period with them on. I'm not really wanting to run fast times in it. More looking for the look and a bit of fun two or three weekends a year.
