Title: fabs (speedwell) can you find? Buggy House/Porter Karmann Ghia?
Post by: Jim Ratto on December 10, 2007, 21:40:38 pm
Hi fabs, how you doing brother?  ;D

Can you find any published info on the Bonneville land speed record Karmann Ghia that was campaigned by Jerry Young / Buggy House and Porter Machine? I think it was active around 1974-1976. I think originally it ran a naturally aspirated 83 x SPG 69, with Berg square port heads, 48IDAs, I don't know the rest. At one point, Jerry helped build a 2 cylinder VW motor for a displacement limited record, and later a turbo 1500cc. All this info comes from vague stories and foggy memories. About 15 years ago, Jerry dug out an old photo album with pics from the 1500cc IDA motor in the car...very cool....all cooling tin cadium finished. Maybe RACEHEAD Tony Mace has some info, memories...etc. I think the car was in Hot VW's though....maybe our archivist can dig it up?  ;D

Thanks speedwell, awesome work.....I will have to get Jerry to join in and check out the post. This same Jerry built 2332 for Pete Staat's Dragon blue street killer, and showed me pretty much everything I know about motors.

I got a chance to call up Jerry and harass him with question after question about the car....lots o' fun. Jerry said some guy in Concord CA had the car in orig condition a few years back, minus engine (s) and wanted almost nothing for car. Unfortunately, Jerry never heard back again from the guy as of yet. He said the last of the 2-cylinder 1000cc motor went to the dumps just a few years ago  :o...it was up in the rafters all those years @ BH and I never even knew it! I do remember Jerry's dad, Stanley, telling me about when his street Bug ran around with the turbo motor on the street.....good old stories. Fabs, did you know sheep worked at Buggy House too?  ;D No kidding....man, did we have fun there. Sometimes poster SODA did too for a little while. One big disfunctional family.... :)

here's a funny sidenote Jerry added to the story about the Bonneville KG...

one day out there, they got the big tall guy (Jerome) in the car to make a one way pass, and belted him in, but the wind picked way up, delaying the attempt. So the crew parked car, and got in motorhome next to it, and waited for winds to die down. A few hours later that day the winds went away and they got out of motorhome with the intention to get Jerome back in car and make a pass. But the KG was gone. They scarambled in panic, assuming somebody had stole the car. They serached and searched, and finally found discernible tire tracks in the salt bed and followed them. Seems the wind blew so hard it blew the car for three miles.  ::)
