I think I want to keep my horn grills but shave the turn signals on the '67. So I was thinking of putting the turn signals behind the horn grills. Good idea, bad idea? Anyone done this and if so how did you mount the signals? Any other suggestions?

Measure up how long an arm you need and go to your local mnotorbike parts shop.

Keep the horn grills and buy some of those headlights with the led turn signal built into it.  Check out a streetrodder magazine they have them advertised.  If I had a flat headlight car that is what I would do.  You can't see them when they are not lit.  You need to get rid of  those ugly things on top of the fenders.  On my '66 I put the turn signals inside the headlight bucket with reflectors and that works great!

Yeah I saw some of those. Mid America carries some that bolt right in. My only thing with them is the lenses are flat. I know it is a little thing, but I like the round look of the bulbs. I may end up doing that anyway. But what ever I do, I will be shaving off the stock turn signals.

My problem with Lucas lights on a '67 is, well, you might as well run '68+ fenders. What is the point in hunting down German '67 fenders then removing what makes them unique. Just my 2 cents.

i edited the photo i posted last night and "shaved" the front fenders  ;D

I am going to swing by the book store tonight and pick up a copy a copy of Streetrodder and see if they have any nicer looking ones for sale. Doing it that way would be the easiest.

These are the ones I was talking about.  They are not cheap, but they look pretty good.

To me, those look like ass.  I had a pair on my 67, and they are now roundfiled.

Thats what most guys do Louis you can pick up a 68 or later German Fender Cheap same Quailty the only Difference is your welding up the bumper hole instead of the horn grill hole then installing Lucas Lights.

tha is exactly what our buddy Ron did with his 67, and hung the 67 fenders on the wall.

I have my turning signal light in my headlights but then again i have the sloping type(pre 67).

Only problem i have is that the headlight bleaches the orange color so every now and then i have to change the bulp.

When i will do the body i might consider to put the turning lights behind the horn grill ;D

This is incorrect, the German 68 fenders looks very similar, but they are not the same as a US fender. The biggest difference is that the headlight on a US 67 sits lower in the fender than on a 68 fender.
This was discussed in detail in a thread here at the lounge some time ago, Sorry I don't remember where..

i thought that was because some repro fenders are worse quality...
as for me, i ditch my first pair of repro fenders due to the headlight sitting a whole 2 cm lower than my brother's '69 1200 "sparkaefer" which i used as a reference.

Put a reflector behind the bulb then you won't have that problem.

LOL JHU I was the one telling the difference on the 67 GERMAN fender the headlight is 1/2 inch lower then a 68 and later fender  but an aftermarket 67 fender the headlights are the same height if you are changing both fender to 68 and later German fenders  not a Big Deal

i can see what the fuss is all about, from the picture that i posted above you can definitely see the headlight is lower than on a 68-

The funny part is that car has both aftermarket fenders  look at the horn grill location

i only looked at his right hand fender (left for us)  ;)

that is why you should run lucas turnsignals. you weld up the holes and put the lights where they must be. and sorry if i say this, but turnsignals behind the horngrills, look a bit cheap... :-[ you can better install them proper if you have to paint the wings. just my 2c.

Here's mine again...

An alternative is to use new Mexican fenders.  Made by VW of thick steel, they don't have the turn signal hole on the top to weld up.  Just weld up the bumper slot and you are ready.
