Title: More 1776 question :)
Post by: Lee.C on January 06, 2008, 02:14:12 am
Hey Guys - yet again I have some more question for you all  ::) ;) :)

Me and my friend Gav (G77) dropped off his 1776cc motor to our friendly engining builder (the same guy how built mine)
We were there for nearly 4 hours chatting and helping strip the the "Top End" we also found out some VERY interesting thing like it only had a 7:1 compression ratio and heavily worn cam followers  :o But it does have Scat H beam Rods :o :)

The reason for this rebuild is that we have ALOT of problems with the heads on this engine, we have had BIG prolems with the Valve seats and Guides and we decided it was time to do something about it.

After alot of chatting between the 3 of us we have come up with these "ROUGH" specs:

- 69x90.5 ( welded/counterweighted VW crank)
- Scat mini D port heads 40x37.5 (40cc Chambers)
- 9.5:1 Compression Ratio
- FK8 Cam
- 1.25:1 Ratio'd Rockers
- 1 5/8 Header
- 40 dellorto's (possibly 48 ida if funds allow)

So guys how does this little lot sound guys  ??? :)

Why the 1.25s with the FK-8? How about a w-110 or w-120 instead? All in all sounds like a good combo. The 40 dells are about the same size as 44 idfs.

I thought Gav had a 1914?

But well, all i can say is that you can never go wrong with that setup and some 1.4 rockers. On the other hand i guess you mention 1.25 rockers cos he already runs them, and if that's so i know it has been mentioned on here by a knowledge lounger that it can be done. That would give .481" lift on the valve, whereas say a 120 cam would give .496" lift with 1.25 rockers.

Lastly, if you say you had problems with the valve guids etc. Are you gonna rebuild the heads as well then?

Nope its a 1776 dude  :) and as for the heads they are being scrapped and we are fitting my old Scat items  :)

now as for the choice of 1.25's with the FK8 - we were thinking this would give a slightly "wider" power band - Any thoughts  ???

Lift is a good thing... unless you're floating the valves. Id run the 120x1.25 combo.

Get the heads flowed and it will run in the 13's with that setup.

Havent read the combo of a Fk8 and 1:25 rockers but like you said maybe it will give a wider powerband range.

But i would go with a w125 with the 1:25 rockers but thats just intuition ;D

Thanks guys - I've been doing abit of reading and I think it might be best to go with the FK8 and 1.4's seeing as were going for a 9.5 compression ratio and the heads have already been "flowed" and are pretty wild and I know they are good for 12's   ;) :)

Cool Lee all have to do now is put a 82mm crank and you got a 2110cc motor. ;D

Hi,
i have choosen in the past a FK7 with 1.25 rockers in a 1600 with ported stock heads, 40 IDF, and it runs great...i run a 17.1s in a full heavy street 65 bug...But the engine had a nearly stock flywheel,5500 upm and great tourque at low rpm...If you had allready the 1,25 rocker, choose it, if you have to buy new ones, take the 1.4...So you have more performance possibilities in the future..But note, take good quality ones, the cheap ones have too wide range of different ratios in one rocker set...CB, SCAT are good...

Bye and good luck
Tom

hey that is Ron flemming in that top picture at Bad Camberg with the bug.  ;D

anyway i would like to see someone run the FK7 cam with 1.4's just like the rags to ripper engine and post here on the lounge by speedwell (hot vw's really)

that was a good combo and would work in a 1776 as well. not sure what the heads will do as too much isn't good either...

I've got a 1776 with an FK10, 1.54:1 rockers 40x35.5 heads and 9.5:1 compression in my bug that seems to work well, nice and docile under 5500rpm ;D

p.s  that is Ron Flemming, talking to Jeff 'the buffer' Caton :)

"hey that is Ron flemming in that top picture at Bad Camberg with the bug" Thats why I took the picture dude  ;) :)

Thanks for all the infor though guys - I think we are pretty much decided on the FK8 and 1.4's, it seems like a good all round combo and Tony Royston seems to think it will be pretty cool and he's doing all our machining work  ;) :)

I will keep you all informed don't worry guys  :)

sorry to take us slightly off topic....

but don't you guys wonder what displacement Engle bases their cam descriptions on?
Are they all 1600cc?
Funny, I called there once, asking which cam THEY suggested for a hot street daily driver 1776, whole heartedly expecting to hear "110" but they told me W125!

Anyway, funny, they suggest that the 130 is For Drag Racing ONLY  ;D
Put that in a 2200cc + street car and it's a pussy cat.

i'm not expecting any pussycat behaviour off of it  ;)

n.b. good point; cams got their reputation, but displacement should definitely be taken into account with it!!

You should get him to do your headwork too ;)
