Title: Car of the week
Post by: lawrence on January 09, 2008, 04:14:38 am
I am sure that other gearheads on the lounge daydream about and research, real world, non vw cars they would love to own. I do this on a regular basis. How about you. ???

Last week I was searching ebay motors for "new" GTOs. Some think that they look too plain, but that is what appeals to me. A neighbor has one and I cannot help staring at it every time it drives by. The exhaust note is wonderful.

This week I saw a rough but mechanically sound 57 ford f100 for sale on craigslist. $1500. I envisioned painting it olive drab green with gray steel wheels then adding tall, narrow truck tires for a vintage look. I would love to daily drive something like that and haul dirtbikes on the weekend.

Of course, I love motorcycles as well and was seaching for early 60s triumphs when I stumbled across a picture of 59 harley davidson xlch.  :o beautiful.

Someday I will have the time and money to get these things. :D

I was a "Junior Restoration Engineer" I had just finished my 4 apprentership at GM/vauxhall/holden (depending on country) and I wanted to move on.

It was a AWSOME place to work and its where I learnt ALOT of fabrication skills as well as "Hand Polishing" which is why my Cal Parts Look Soooo good  ;) :)

I used to take a freshly Sand Cast aluminuim Monza filler cap and purely by HAND I would get it to a MIRROR finish  :o
by the time I left I could do one in about 8 hours  :)

We even did a Pebble Beach car - a 1951 212inter - now that was a truly beautifal car - check it out  :)

oh yeah and I once prepared the Black Speedster from "Top Gun" for a concours show  ;) :)

i'd like to introduce a car of the week  ;D
a few days ago i was walking to the bus from my campus and this wicked 911T drove past. imagine - cold engine, sputtering etc. with the cool fuchs wheels shining in the dark etc. i was in awe  ;)

then today i spot it again, parked in between all modern day cars, apart from the volvo amazon and jaguar mk II a few meters away.

don't you love the colour? i'd love to see a looker in that goldish yellow colour.
i had a good look on the dashboard too. tach goes until 8,000. oil press. oil temp etc. awesome!!

now here is an odd ball...

1980 BMW M1
3.5 liter Kugelfischer mechanically-injected, 6-butterfiled 24-valve DOHC 6 cyl

Guigiaro-designed exotic-car bodywork, build commisioned to Lamborghini (but later revoked thanks to Lambo's financial crisis at the time), race-car for the street...BMW made these to meet homologation requirements for Gr 5.

I actually ran one of these with my '67 up Newport Blvd. from the light at Foothill Blvd. He pulled me but not by a lot. I still wonder what he thought when his brand new state of the art supercar was being paced by a 15 y.o. Volkswagen. One of my favorite (not quite a) kill stories!

Nice choice. I saw several at Concourso Italiano this year.

When I was a kid, there was a guy in Newport Beach that had one I would see occasionally.

Could it be that your Alfa has put you in an italian mood?  ;)

hard to top this one, in terms of beauty, raw power, and auditory effects.

90hp/liter 3.9 liter V12 shoehorned behind cabin, rearview mirror filled with 4 IDA3C Webers, almost no muffling, spine-chilling Bertone, thigh-high bodywork, all in 1970. The SV, in my opinion was and still is the ultimate Italian exotic. You can have those new "German" Lamborghinis.

Ten thumbs up for your choice Frank! A fantastic car! If I could add two more things it would be 4 motion and a chip. Only negative thing is that a Multivan with these specs would cost around 800 000 Nkr / 100 000 EUR / 150 000 USD in Norway due to our taxes.

510s are bad. I have seen some slick ones with modern turbocharged nissan motors, but a L20 truck motor with DCOEs would also be very cool.

I have seen quite a few early R32s on the street the last few days. The exhaust note is spine tingling.
A new one would be killer as well. (http://www.autodestaques.com/imagens/vw-golf-r32-2.jpg)

Ferrari 365BB, the orginal 4.4 liter version....
designed by Pininfarina in direct response to Lamborghini Countach, motor was "boxer" flat 12, based on Ferrari's successful (@ the time) Formula 1 flat 12's, but same displacement as "Daytona" V12, and fed by 4 Weber 40-IDF3C carbs. Timing belt replaced chains. In some ways, the Boxer was the "follow-up" response to the Miura, really the first roadgoing midengined 12-cyl monster. In my opinion, the Boxer was the best looking Ferrari from 1973 to date. Somewhere along the lines Pininfarina lost the magic and ended up squaring corners off and punching cheese-grater vents all over the poor cars. The Boxer was low, wide, hulking, muscular, yet graceful. 380hp @ 7800rpm, 0-60 in just under 6 sec, 178mph....   ;)

How about some customs? Three of my all time favorites.

Cadzilla is probably my favorite even if I hate the new interior the current owner installed.

Ive seen this Delahaye twice in person, and it would still stop me in my tracks. Gorgeous car. Last time I saw it, it was wearing blackwall tires and seemed to be hovering over the ground... the size and the grandeur cant be explained, it must be seen. Figoni was the best of the coachbuilders!

You'd flood the market make them worthless. Plus they wouldn't have any patina cause they'd be brand new! :D :D :D

Porsche 928 1978-1995... one of the most technically competent cars available over its entire lifespan.
If you've ever driven one, you'll agree with me, they are a sheer pleasure to drive, and drive fast.

Jim, I had a red 84 s with ss exhaust, no cats, somekind of HP cams and 18" wheels. I'll try to find some pics. You are right, 928's are one of the neatest cars ever made. I think I only put about 5000 mi on it in 12 years. Glenn

Hi Glenn, my dad had an '83 (non S), somewhat low mileage, crunchy 2nd gear syncro, otherwise a very sound car. I have yet to drive a car that was so well rounded, braking, acceleration, grip...comfort.... they really do it all. Bad thing is the repair costs. Timing belt, water pump, transaxle, clutch, cooling, you name it...it's made of German Gold. Still, they are great cars. see you Saturday.  ;D
