Christie who lived in Tustin at the time, purchased the car from Holmes for $3800ish complete. Over a period of time, the wheels, engine, and back seat were sold off, and then the car was put up for sale. I saw the car with Bill Rogers.... in her/their gargage, and the asking price was $1200. I passed (sick). Years later, I located it again, this time up in Hesperia, and talked to the owner. Many things were changed, not much left from the glory days. Again, no Baja, no crash after it left Christie's hands. Holmes did crash the car, back about 1976. But Beckers put it back together. I called Dyno, and he confirmed much of this. Fair point, but there were a few different versions of this, and I was trying to get it from the horses mouth! Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: Neil Davies on January 11, 2008, 17:15:53 pm I sold it to a guy that lived in the Brea area. His first name I think was Keith but can't remember his last. I head he later sold it to a chick and it went down hill from there. You could be right about being in Hesperia Ca. at some point. I have kicked myself for letting it go but was not a practical car for me to be driving at the time, as my sole means of transportation. Thanks for the big welcome... Simon, Jim posted this in the "Welcome Jim Holmes" thread. I'm guessing this is all he knows about it. :( Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: jholmes on January 12, 2008, 02:01:26 am cool. Fair point, but there were a few different versions of this, and I was trying to get it from the horses mouth! Yes, I believe most of the above information is true except of one think. I did not sell the car to Christie. I sold it as I mentioned to a guy in Brea, which I think his first name was Keith. I heard he only owned it for a short time then sold it to a girl, which could be Christie. I also heard about the same things mentioned about what happened to the car after she bought it. It's ture that I did crash the car around that time. Beckers did put it a front clip on it and repainted it. I re-wired it along with putting in a new dash to match the original. Greg Aronson (the original owner) help me with the putting the car back together at his shop. That's about it guys! :) Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: jholmes on January 12, 2008, 02:06:44 am I have a few of those ;D ... they would look better signed :o I'd be happy to do that for you anytime if you wish. I redid the Feb' 75 issue cover with Scott Bakken a few years ago (I don't recall the exact issue right now...2/2001?). Same exact spot, some time of year, in front of the same apartments, etc. Only new/replacement Costa Mesa cop and newer police car, and instead of using Linda Dill, we used Gina Wright who also works for HVWs. The location is on Mendoza Drive, in Costa Mesa, off Baker near our office. I took Julian from Super VW Magazine there, and showed him where the cover was shot. They also did some photography there as well. Hallow ground for the California Look.

The one in #42 looks cracked just above the "map" light. Was that why it was replaced? Jim? EDIT:On closer inspection it seems like on the "first" version the plexiglass is riveted to the dash itself, perhaps explaining the stress causing the crack while the other one MAY be using regular philips screws? The whole dash was replaced after the crash so might look slightly different. Rivets were used in both cases. Did you have a radio in the glovebox? 8 track player?Just curious. Also were those EMPI seats? Yes, the tunes were in the glove box & as I remember there was a combo of an 8 track / radio at one time (again "not to date myself). The frame of the seats were custom wielded (built) but can't remember where the fiberglass buckets came from. Greg Aronson might remember, I can ask him the next time I see him... Jim jim here's the pict from the stereo ;D ;D Your right Deano about the dash. The whole dash was replaced after the crash so might look slightly different. Rivets were used in both cases. Some pictures were taken earlier, I believe before the glass buckets were installed and before I owned the car. The car always had the fiberglass buckets when I had it. The passenger side hinged forward so someone could get into the back, which rarely happened. :) thus the photo with the 2 small gauges and the other seats was the first version and then after the crash the buckets were installed and the dashboard changed and it have 3 small gauges in the place of the 2 , and consequently for this reason before there was a sticker becker bug house known with driver side and then it was a brad upholstry in place of old :D jim can you tell us more about the crash if you know the story ::) that's greg who crash the car ??? if I correctly read what it is marked above ;D Not much of a story what happened. It was me that owned and crashed the car at the time. I was going east on Lincoln Blvd around noon time. I think I was coming from FAT Performance. I was going through the intersection with a green light when some guy in a huge old American car (can't remember the make) pulled out from a gas station (on the other side of the intersection) right in front of me taking up both lanes. He was trying to go left (into my on coming traffic) but the traffic wouldn't let them continue his turn. He was stuck and so was I. I could have chosen to go into on coming traffic or jump the curb on the corner and take on the gas station. Neither sounded good to me at the time so I braced myself and "T" Boned the guy. All I know is I was looking at a green light and the next thing I saw was a big ass car taking up both lanes, stopped in front of me. The next thing, I was sitting on the curb looking at my car saying "Oh Shit"! Greg Aronson and I lived together at the time in an apartment so he was a great help to me (besides Breckers) in getting it back together, in fine shape I might add... ;D It probably took 3 months before it was back on the road. Well that's about it... Hope you get the jest of it all, kind of hard to explain in an e-mail. ??? ;D Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: jholmes on January 19, 2008, 20:53:05 pm Those are some great photos. Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: deano on January 20, 2008, 17:18:47 pm No problem with the color tune up, they now look correct. Those old photos were a bit too redish. I now recall where I took them. That was in the parking lot of Gardner Fulmer (printing), in Fullerton, where Jake and I worked together on the swing shift. Our shift was 3:00-11:00pm, so we often had a lot of time to screw around, like taking night photos in the parking lot (car waxing/detailing, changing plugs), you get the idea. From there, I went to work for Hot VWs, as Jake stayed in lithography to this day.

Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: bilboa2 on October 31, 2009, 02:17:06 am Ok, Here is the way I have it.. Kieth from la habra bought the car from jim, when I was in dkp 2. I bought it from kieth , $3500 and I owned it for around 3 yrs. I was living in balboa with roger grago and wanted to get a 911. I later sold it to christi for 4000. The ck was from her grandma to me , like 2 other cars i sold her. Great grandma, still kick'n too..I think clyde berg got the wheels, ?? A old vw guy named fred elliot seemed to be involved in the next sale. Heard it was a baja too. Yes, I have "brm finger".. (ask doug berg)..Christi has a mental block on what happened when i ask her..Damm, I wish I still had that car.. I changed the radio in the glove box to a blaupunkt. I remember driving to sacramento bugorama with kieth goss shotgun and doug and clyde berg in the backseat. Got first place in the car show. Still have the trophy, says bugorama III. Got an old photo of it in the car show. Doug did a great hand drawing too, but it faded away to nothing. Previous owner kieth gave a few nice black and white photos of car. Will try to scan a post. Remember back then, These cars where are only cars, daily drivers..Could never afford to have two, sell one ,financing the next one. I just had to have a 911.. I remember mark thurber building his red one, greg, doing a green one. ron just got his black 2.2 then i think. Roger really helped me alot on my 72 2.7 euro spec grand prix white 911. Built it,flogged it, went to jail, sold it. Bought a land cruiser....Oh yeah, roger,, according to the OTHER post I really had to twist your arm on partying...Remember, "first ones free" saying?..Like I said living in orange county "growing up" was the BEST for a car guy...bill

Ok, Here is the way I have it.. Bought a land cruiser....Oh yeah, roger,, according to the OTHER post I really had to twist your arm on partying...Remember, "first ones free" saying?..Like I said living in orange county "growing up" was the BEST for a car guy...bill Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: speedwell on October 31, 2009, 10:03:09 am That original cover shot was taken in late November, early Decemeber, and 10-11 am. Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: bilboa2 on November 01, 2009, 05:51:28 am Sorry to say, I cannot find any pics of my 911. I wish I had taken more pictures of my cars, as I have had quite a few nice ones, always changing the look,engines etc, like my current bahama blue 65. The look of the aronson/holmes 63 car when I had it did not have dkp stickers or brads uph decals in vent windows. It did have the push button starter, and I changed it to a key set up. The steering wheel was different too,I think maybe a carrera style? I always thought the dome light in the dash was neat too. I have to say scott did an excellent job on his car. I just wish he would race it without the decals all over the side and step up and buy some of those original brm sets, HA,($$$). His car is freaking fast.. A 2332, fk89 that has run a 11.30. He is one heck of a driver too. billl

My sister was going through old family pictures and sent me this picture today. Taken across the street from my parents house circa 1981 ? ?. Possible better pic to follow. Notice no dkp decals. And notice the California Fed building in the background on the corner of Euclid and Crescent. John Lazenby used to work at the Crawfords Market across the street. The Cal fed 6 story building with the time and temperature displayed on roof since has been torn down.. Again, the ownership order as I have it ,, Greg Aronson, Jim Holmes, Kieth ?..., Bill Rodgers, Cristi Duda, then crash ? ? . As I stated earlier Kieth had a professional photographer take some pics that are in my scrapbook. I did send the Sacramento Bugorama first place trophy to Russel when he bought my 65 looker. This is got to be one of the last pics of the car. R.I.P. for ever to be known as THEE ... Aronson/Holmes white car...

Thanks to Sarge sending me the link in an e-mail, I got to enjoy all those cover creations. Sorry I haven't logged on to the Lounge for sometime so I've missed a lot of what's going on in the VW world. All those cover shots bring back good memories of friends that were "in and around" DKP, along with all the great cars. I also still enjoy the VW get togethers in my area to re-visit those good times. Who would have thought after all these years we're still having this much fun and passing it on to a new generation with the help Cal-look Lounge, Hot VW Magazine, all of you and all your Great VW's.

Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: Russell on May 28, 2019, 09:31:04 am So after some investigation work this is the most upto date history of the car, happy to amend and update if any extra or new information comes forward;
Manufactured in 1962 and shipped to Chicago. 1962 to 1967 Unknown 1967 to 1970 Greg Aronson, was Brown when he purchased it in summer 67, Painted White in 1968 by Beckers, sold to Jim in 1970 1970 to 1977 Jim Holmes, featured in HVW 1975, car crashed in 76, sold to Keith 8th Sep 77 1977 to 1981 Keith Bruno, Located in Brea CA 1981 to 1984 Bill Rodgers (Bilboa) 1984 to 1984 Christi Duda, Crashed car twice we think, repaired by Keith Goss at least once 1984 to 2017 Jim Morris, replaced Sunroof and roof lining on May 84 (1995 transferred in to a trust) May 2017- Russell Ritchie Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: Jos on May 28, 2019, 10:42:28 am Russell are you able to divulge how Jim Morris aquired it? How you found it? and where it was located (so we can all realize how close it was lol)
Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: Russell on May 28, 2019, 12:05:38 pm Russell are you able to divulge how Jim Morris aquired it? How you found it? and where it was located (so we can all realize how close it was lol) Car Stored for 33 years in Apply Valley, Hesperia, CA ;D Jim said it was local and he recognised it when it was damaged and he made an offer, once he had it the sunroof cover was replaced as it was in very poor condition, the car came with the original T bars, Indicators, Chrome ashtray, glovebox lid and handbrake lever along with some other tell tale signs, the DKP sticker on the rear window was still there and slightly worn, but I've left it and you could see where the DKP stickers had been on the vent windows. Well, it came up for sale on the samba, however I had heard it had been offered back to Greg and he said no, I contacted the seller Jim and we had a few phone calls, in the back ground there were 2 others interested in it one was too late the other didn't have the cash at had I understand. However, and more importantly I had told Jim to ensure that it didn't go to a dealer who would resell for more money.... Jim spoke to a few people and was told by a couple (they know who they are "Thank You") that I was the right guy to get it, this did help no end to ensure that it was sold to the right type of person who would appreciate and bring back to life. With a deal eventually done (May 17) the car was collected for me by a very trustworthy VW Guy Steve "Scooby" Wiedner and taken to a secure location before shipping to UK. Thanks again steve. Arriving with me in 2017 and now undergoing recommissioning back to its former glory where possible. Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: Fastbrit on January 12, 2021, 19:32:59 pm And before anyone says/thinks...although I wrote the feature, I didn't write the captions to the photos. If I had, I'd not have swapped Mark Thurber and Greg 'Youngie' Aronson. ;D

It was so kind of Russell to send a couple of the Magazines over the pond for us so we could enjoy going back in time. I say "we" because because Russell sent me two copies so I was able to share one with Greg. All in all, I'm sure Greg would agree, it's amazing and fun to see that the Cal-Look is still out there and still carries a bit of popularity.
I must say it was the time of my life to enjoy driving the car again with my wife at my side (whom I owned the car while dating) at the EBI!!!! Thanks to all of you that continue the interest and to Russell for bringing the White Car back for all to enjoy! Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: jholmes on February 15, 2022, 22:08:09 pm Yes, the car looked GREAT to me also and again thanks to Russell bringing it back to its original look. It was a fun day for me seeing all the VWs and some of the guys I haven't seen in awhile.
Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: Neil Davies on February 15, 2022, 23:21:47 pm I've just watched the video on the Hot VWs channel on YouTube, literally 15 minutes ago! It was seeing Bill Taormina's replica in Volksworld in early 1996 (I think!) that made me dechrome my bug and paint it bright white, and raise the back end up to stock again. It is the ultimate Cal Looker.
Title: Re: '75 Original Hot VW Cover Post by: chris67bug on June 19, 2022, 22:09:02 pm Delighted to see the car finished - congrats to all involved. I'm sure like many others, I first heard about this car in articles in volksworld circa 1993 and also in Keith's book a couple of years later. The simplicity of design of what volksworld called at the time 'the old school' cal look was highly inspiring and i hoovered up every detail of the old stories of the formation of the first dkp all those years earlier. The fate of Greg's/ Jim's car was always a mystery and just like the two inch pinchers (well technically one and half if you like), it seemed like the truth would never be revealed.
It is therefore very much a dream come true to finally see this car back in the condition that inspired myself and so many others. Below is a picture of the '67 I spent some years restoring after being inspired by this car and the others of dkp 1. Again thanks to all involved in its purchase and restoration.
