Title: EMPi 5 Split Rims or Sprints
Post by: Ivan on January 17, 2008, 16:48:45 pm
Here's a shot of my old '64 1500S on Sprints parked behind my friend from the same town as me, Steve Mander's '64 1500S on OG Split rims

What do you prefer?

Normally I prefer the sprints over the Empi 5's, but on that front one the split rims just look so right! ;)

Was your one the one that Martin Gilks of the Wonderstuff bought, that got burnt out? Seem to remember seeing a toasted green notch at paintbox and was sure it was his.

Couldn't say, I know Steve still has his one on EMPIs, I sold mine to Jason Reynolds and it ended up a bit battered and dented, repaired with badly mismatched paint, the EMPI Sprints were sold off, the EMPI steering wheel was sold off and then it was sold on to a few people and came up for sale in the back of VolksWorld toward the end of last year for something like £6500 - which didn't seem like a bad deal, until you take into account I sold it for £4500 with the wheels and steering wheel... Oh, and that it was nothing like as clean and cared for as when I had it.

Did the car with Sprints have this sticker then? I remember that being on a similar coloured Notchback with Sprint Stars..

;D That guy got bored of people asking if his Notch was mine! My one came from Lars Hasa in Sweden - and I still regret selling it, it was awesome.

And this is the '64 1500S I built back in 1990 it was mostly N.O.S and took a lot of work - oh, and it was a Right Hand Drive one

Im taking a liking to painted (not chrome!) Sprint Stars lately. Factor in that you can have the sizes staggered front to rear, and the fact that every real EMPI 5 Ive ever seen was cracked to shit. Im sold on the Sprints! ;D

I really like the sprintstarwheels on any type III, To me it looks like a wheel which was designed for a Type III volkswagen...

i think the sprints suit the type 3 better,  but i prefer the Empi's as a wheel, especially on a cal look type 1.

In this case I prefer the sprints. But that doesn't mean sprints look god on every type 3. I think it is always the composition, that has to be perfect. A nice wheel on a green beetle with t-bars can look totaly wrong on a red one with bumbers. Offset, tire size, stance, the way the wheel arches are filled... lots of different parameters here.
