Title: Wide 5 or Porsche 5x130 PCD conversion?
Post by: cal-look.net on January 20, 2008, 20:19:52 pm
Mulling over some ideas for my bug for 2008.

1st priority is front disks, and to ditch the nasty 7 year old MWS BRM copies!

2 options in my head so far

1: Running a set of JGE GeeBees or a set of Flat-4 Fuchs and a CSP 5x130 pcd front disk kit.

Can you buy 5x130 pcd rear drums for an early bug . . . what are the options for converting stud pattern on an early car?

2: Running a set of detailed Flat-4 BRMs and CSP wide 5 disk kit.

Option 2 I think is easier and cheaper, Flat-4 BRMs are much cheaper than I remember, but not a radical change to the look I have now!

What do you guys reckon? is converting to Porsche stud pattern worth it?

Appreciate some input from the lounge, my wife is bored with my banging on about this!

Cheers,

Steve

I have 4-lug drum with 5x130mm bolt pattern in back of my Oval. I cannot remember anymore but I guess they were from CSP (http://www.csp-shop.de/shop2/frame_nachladen.php?func=det&wkid=78389712486&rub1=Wheels+/+Brakes&rub2=Brake+Drums,Brake+Drums+rear&artnr=13317a&pn=0). Before that I used adapters with Fuchs.

I got an Mr Bug EMPI rear disc kit in the back of my Cabriolet project. I got it really cheap so couldn't resist of buying it even that I should have known better, it is working now and I guess it'll be just fine but wasn't as much bolt-on operation as I expected.

is converting to Porsche stud pattern worth it?

Trust me, it is  :D

Disc's = stopping better and cleaner . got to be 130 pcd for the cost effective option . Went to Machine7 for mine , discs up front drums out back .

Wide five discs command silly money , Im very happy with my 130 pcd set up .

good stuff, cheers fellas!

I couldn't work out if the drums fitted an early bug or not, will give Machine 7 a call.

Anyone got a set of JGE GeeBees? are they worth the extra cash over MWS?

Yes! Don't have them, but I've seen both - no contest. ;)

As far as wheels go, only you can decide what you really want.

5x130:
As mentioned, less costly to convert to better stopping.
Flexibility in wheel choices; i.e. if you can drill rotors and drums for Porsche lug pattern, you can also drill rotors and drums for most other patterns.
"oooh" factor

5x205:
There are lots of cool choices becoming available (again) for the stock Beetle pattern.
Nothing says "aircooled Beetle" like wide-5 wheels!

Anyway back to your car - Not too sure about the Geebee's I think it would look pretty cool on Fuchs ;) :)

Found some bargain 2nd hand Flat-4 Enkei Five Spokes.

I think they look cool.

Have kept the MWS BRMs, will detail them as a spare set.

Cheers guys, love it or hate it, it was time for a change! ;D

Still lovin' the BRMs - they need a serious amount of TLC though!

i love enkeis.youve got a narrowed beam then .net? those enkeis got a largish offset.

I do have a narrowed beam, 1.75"s I think.

The Enkei's offset is actually the same as the MWS BRMs +12, one of the reasons I chose them!

You prob thinking of Cal Part / ET Mags / Crestline wheels , they all look rather simular and Enkeis are a replica of all i supose, but all have terrible offsets and can be a nightmare to fit.
