Title: Detailing my gas-burners...
Post by: roland on January 28, 2008, 14:18:28 pm
So i got these raw grey gas burners that i want to detail. The grey paint is chipping and i want to totally remove it...

So, how?

Sandblasting will probably be too aggressive for the magnesium, i was thinking about chemical paint stripper, but i'm afraid it could react with the magnesium in some way and damage it.

Some of you got info or experience?

I blasted mine, Roland, and had no problem.  I painted them with an acrylic enamel 8 years ago and they sit outside daily on my truck.  I don't think you have anything to worry about.

How about media blasting rather than sand - walnut shell is supposed to be pretty good - heard it can be used on fibreglass so it can't be that harsh!

I'd try bakeing soda first then work up abraisive. and depending were you are located, avalability wise. valspar makes a bitchen primer DTM direct to metal works bitchen or zink cromate, first thing on bare metal is most important. my 2 cent's

ask speedwell he had his 5 spokes sanded but with a delicate material. feathers or beads or something like that. maybe that is a good solution for you as well

I got my burners blasted and then painted two years ago and they still look good. Have to polish them after every wash though  ::)

Originally, Mahle used a green primer.  This makes me think of a primer specifically made for aluminum (which is also green).  A co I used to work for many years ago used such a primer on bare castings.
