My first "looker" had buggy bumpers. They are way cool, and way "old school cal-look". I didn't have digi back then, but will try to post....

I will be trying some on my next project, how do you mount these things?

Title: Re: Buggy bars on a Cal Looker.
Post by: Zach Gomulka on October 14, 2006, 18:58:30 pm
My guess would be that they mount to the front beam and the rear frame horns?

Title: Re: Buggy bars on a Cal Looker.
Post by: jick on October 14, 2006, 21:17:36 pm
i had a front set on my cal look car in around 1988, they mounted on the 4 front beam mounting bolts ( i'm pretty sure?)

i think the rear ones just mount to the stock bumper hangers.

i'll be putting just a rear one on my '64 gasser, eventually. ;)

Title: Re: Buggy bars on a Cal Looker.
Post by: Gary Justus on October 15, 2006, 00:23:27 am
Back in '79 I made some mounts out of flat steel (damn, should have used aluminum) and used plumbers tape to make a secure rear mount (kinda like a custom hose clamp)....I'm sure everybody today has CNC and aluminum fabrication abilities. THEY STILL LOOK TOUGH!

Title: Re: Buggy bars on a Cal Looker.
Post by: Lee.C on October 15, 2006, 00:35:50 am
You probably use the same ones I used on my Manx, The front one simple has 2 tabs that are welded to the beam and then the bar is bolted to these and the rear is one is from Mark at Flatlands Engineering and is a proper bit of kit - it mounts to the frame horns and the craddle under the box which I think would be alot better than mounting it to the body/bumper mounts

I will post some pic's of all the mounts soon  :)

i welded 2 tabs to the beam and welded nuts inside the ends of the tubes and bolted it on

LOL is that Don Metz?  LMAO

The Front Buggy Bumper will will not work on an Bug you have to use two rears  they were mounted back in the day by making 1 inch wide steel straps witch bolted to the inner front wheel well and the the strap was wrapped around the tube and welded to the buggy Bumper on the rear the straps bolted to the bumper bracket holes and was wraped and welded like the front also the rear buggy bumper was heated at the bends and bent up closer to the  rear of the car instead of sticking out so far plus by bending it cleared the QP muffler and the fender since it has to be fished up in there see picture below

I ran buggy bumpers on my '64 in the mid 70's, inspired by Marc Souter's Aqua '67.

Later, I replaced the buggy bumpers with late model T bars... yes, the bars had to be re-drilled, and I had to open the fender and apron cut-outs but I liked the look of the larger T bars on an early car... guess I broke the "rules" a bit.

I still think buggy bumpers are cool when inatalled right... I'm sure you know what I mean, some look a bit funky.

Not to sure about buggy bars , sure they are cal look , bore out of necessity to keep the local law enforcement happy , Don't think i would put them on one of my car's .
IMO I always thought it makes the car look a bit wheel barrow ish , like a handle you need to grab hold of to move the car around  :-\ not that you could pick it up of-coarse

The red car with the glass front end was the Wayne Davis car.  It was pictured in HVWs in probably '82 with the body off andthe pan fully detailed.  One of my favorites.

The yellow vert with the gold 8 spokes was a great car.  Hey Worm - paint yours yellow too!  :)

Fabs, if you do buggy bumpers they need to be painted body color... or maybe black. I think that would look best on your standard.

Bumper bars and tee bars alll came about the califorina inacted a new bumper requirement in the early 70's.  Up until then, no bumpers were required.  I mentioned this in another post that my split window was the second car to have them.  I actually had the idea and shared it with a guy from DVB.  He actually tried it before I did.  They orginally with skid plate mounted rear bumpers for a fiberlass buggy.  We cut them down a little and gave them a slight re shape.  I only installed a front one, but others then did the same for a rear bar.  Shortly after Auto Haus started selling a version similar to what we had used.

Buggy bars, love'em. I have had them on two different cars 20yrs apart.

What about Doug Berg's buggy? I saw him run it a number of times and never thought to take a close look at it. Does anyone have detailed pictures of it? It alsways seemedl like en economical way to go racing.

Bumper history....
Around the early 70's California just inacted a law requiring bumpers on all cars.  Most VW were going with t bars to meet the requirement.  As my front bumper holes were filled, and I really didn't want to re-open them, I needed something that would mount under the car.  I took a original rear buggy bumper that mounted to a skid plate, bent it in slightly...cut off the access, and used that.  We, (auto haus) eventually started making them with the correct curve and length for use with bugs.

I quite like the front buggy bars, it would help as I can attach my front number plate to it!
Now does anyone know where you can get them, I like the ones with a bit of a kink in the front?

Actually, you modify a pair of rear buggy bars . . . one for each end of your Bug!

Does any one have any pics showing how to fit or how to make clamps?
Thanks in advance
