Title: before the internet, before Hot VWs mag... way back when...
Post by: Jim Ratto on February 01, 2008, 17:52:33 pm
Was reading my old copy of Keith's book, California Look VW last night, specifically the chapter that opens with the picture of Greg Bunch's car, and it kind of came to me....these guys were doing some pretty heavy stuff considering there was no VW mag yet, no KYMCO, no SCS, no Samba....etc. First, guys like you Sarge, and the rest of the early DKP guys....where did you guys get your ideas and influence? Secondly, without a Bug speed shop on every corner, where did you buy your stuff?

Back in prehistoric times, we had Kodak Instamatics and memeograph machines  :o ;)  As for speed parts, most of us were young and money-less.  The Custom House in Whittier was a favorite destination.  The owner had a sharp black beetle that he kept parked out front.  We'd go inside and drool over the Moon gauges, idiot lights, switches and other stuff in the display cases before buying an $.85 tube of Semi Chrome or one of those Christmas Tree air fresheners...the sale of the day!  ::) ;D

Boy, do I remember the Custom House "Itch Box" on Whittier Blvd. That old guy who ran that always wore those goofy western rope ties, and was kinda of nervous type. It was a tiny little corner building, with two large glass counters, but only room for about 3-4 people max in the front. I looked more than I bought.

"this club will be better than any before it"

What's great is how it indeed became better than any club!

I think a few of those questions should have warned guys about you hoods.

"have you ever been arrested?"
"What speed do you usually cruise at?"

so did these questions disqualify guy if he said "no" and "45mph"?

Hey Rick,
A friend of mine recently acquired a vintage mimeograph machine a few drums of the chemicals from a rummage sale at an old School.
He has been sending me "mimeographed" copies of old VW performance ads for fun.
I keep telling him I want to get one "right off the press" so it will still be wet and I can re-live the smell.
It's funny some of the memories you retain from childhood.
 :D
