Title: Sarge, can you tell us about those 1972 photos from KS' book? Post by: Jim Ratto on February 01, 2008, 18:26:08 pm Those pictures taken from some dried up grassy park in 1972 of the DKP cars... there's a number of them in Keith's book... (Mahaffey's split, Arnie's '67, your '63, Stan Davis' late model, mark Thurber's brown car...)
What was going on that day? Where was that park? Looks like there were DKP cars as far as the eye could see... Tell us the story Sarge Title: Re: Sarge, can you tell us about those 1972 photos from KS' book? It was right after the park opened, so the shrubery was pretty sparse. Title: Re: Sarge, can you tell us about those 1972 photos from KS' book? Being from "pre" Cal-look days as far as magazines are concerned, was it ever featured? Would love to see detail shots of it. I imagine if there were any, we'd have seen them by now.

Title: Re: Sarge, can you tell us about those 1972 photos from KS' book? Post by: Sarge on February 01, 2008, 21:56:36 pm looks like Lazenby ran Motolita. That sounds right, Jim. Thinking back on John's car...it started life red. As a 40hp, it had a Judson and an 010 distributor. It was later repainted at Babe's in Fullerton...the color was firemist green metalic and was truely a thing of beauty with loads of clear on a flawless base. John had Babe's reshoot the car in butternut years later but the job was rough (the paint never really hardened) so he drug it over to Becker's to get it right. It was an 78.4x88, with Fleming heads and IDAs, 120 or 130 cam, and a magneto.

Post by: Neil Davies on February 04, 2008, 11:28:25 am My friend Brad from my old club, Half A Brain, is building a replica of Lazenby's butternut car. He's a bit of a perfectionist though, so who knows when it'll see the road! It's been painted 3 times already, and he's just changed the doors, wings and welded in a ragtop section! He managed to get the first set of JGE Torkers from Jon Abbott to go on the car. He has been in contact with John Lazenby to find out the colour of the car and although it's correct (Corvette Warbonnet Yellow IIRC) it looks too gold - maybe it's because the old photos have yellowed with age.

Title: Re: Sarge, can you tell us about those 1972 photos from KS' book? Post by: javabug on February 04, 2008, 14:07:57 pm The indicators up high are better than being mounted too low. It appears they are on the same baseline as the head lights.
Title: Re: Sarge, can you tell us about those 1972 photos from KS' book? Post by: Cornpanzer on February 04, 2008, 14:18:24 pm The only thing I would change is the rear stance. The wheels could use a little spacing out and it appears that they have positive camber. Perhaps it was backed into that spot causing the pos camber though.

Ive got his first set in my garage, waiting to go on my car, they do look more gold than the original butternut, but like you say its probably down to the old photos. The holes for the lucas lights are lower too, in the horn grills. The color was '71 Corvetter Warbonnet Yellow, but as I recall once painted by Leonard Becker it was a shade or two different. Actually looked better than the factory color I thought. I'm flattered that you guys think so much of this car. Of course it was my pride and joy and I tried to take a different route than most were doing. As stated before I wanted more of a "formal ride" rather than a race car. Guess that is why I like my Chryslers so much over Mustangs, Camaro's, etc. They are fast, but offer a lot of comfort, which now is a VERY IMPORTANT thing. I look forward to seeing the finished re-creation. I would be more than happy to provide any info I can regarding the car to getting it completed. John Lazenby |
