Title: what car was your great inspiration?
Post by: Glauco on February 03, 2008, 17:45:13 pm
not sure if there is already a topic like this, I know there is one on how you got into it, but there is always one car that got it realy started, for me it is this early type 3, saw it at DDD#4, not sure who is the owner, but I got to sit in it and that made me very happy  ;D
not sure about the spec's, I know there was a porsche engine in there, raised decklid, pop-outs, brm's, the interior wasn't ready yet, it was original, but as good as dead, don't know more.
I didn't know that much about vw's then, still don't but still, love the car, it made me buy my first aircooled vw, a 72 type 3 notchback, wasn't a early one so didn't do much with it, fell in love with a karmann so I traded it, but the notchback was my first love do :P
so let's see yours

The first car i remember really liking, even though it was 80's cal-look.

Was a 1951 beetle, pale blue on polished fuchs by Lars Holmer from Denmark.  It was the cover car on "The Volkswagen Beetle by Nigel Grimshaw"

1976 I was freshman , a senior classmate had a red 67 with alloy's french headlight's, his dad was a bodyman at local ford dealer,1776 with kadrons, man to me that was state of the look cal-look, kind of the reason I started going to ROP  autobody class's I could not afford that look. tuff time then good time's now

that Notch caught my eye as well at DDD4, but i don't like the paint. it's nicely done, but not my taste. i liked it because the owner did race it quite a bit at the show and it overall was nice.

as for one car that was my greatest inspiration i really don't know. i kind of liked pieces from different cars and brought that together in my type3. i do remember the reason why i wanted a type3. that was a black notchback from belgium with a 1776 engine and fuchs ( sorry alloys  ;D) on it. really nice car at the time, but i was drawn even more to the shape of the fastback.

Wade Nishimoto's black 67 was it for me. I vividly remember picking up the copy of hotVWs at an Alpha Beta grocery store in Newark, Ca. in 1987 at 12 years old and thinking DAMN, that's a beautiful car. Cory Mac's funny car Ghia was cool too, but Wade's car was a more realistic goal for an 12 year old. I own 2 black 67s now 20 years later and I still have the copy of hotVWs.

For me it would have to be a combination of the these two ,

seeing them in the flesh back in 96 ( I think ) made my mind up how I wanted to go with my split , then it took me the next ten years to get there .

Mark Herbert's Shitbox. Read about it in VW Trends, then saw it at my first Classic in '99. Loved it because it was ugly and fast, and that was what my '67 was all about- although it wasnt nearly as ugly, or fast!!

Stephan's oval sunroof and the Bergler.

If I ever win the lottery I plan to make Stephan an obscene offer for that car.  ;D

So many! Bill Taormina's replica of the Aronson '63 was the big one - my '68 became appliance white and the back end came back up to stock because of that car! Streetvw's brothers '67, being the first US-spec '67 I'd ever seen made up my mind that although my '68 had got a long bonnet and a '67 decklid it was going to keep the upright headlamps. Roger Grago's Ghia seriously inspired my own Ghia (painted it metallic gunmetal grey and added 8-spokes!) and Lee Leightons Oval influenced my racecar's red with gold pinstriping theme. Now I've got my '51 Mike Mahaffey's split is a massive inspiration and also Bernie's old oval is up there too!

I think for me it would be Greg Brinton's '67 and Rick Wallace's red sunroof.

Dave Rhoads' car is coming on strong lately, as well.
