Title: Maybe you know?
Post by: Worm on February 05, 2008, 03:53:01 am
I was sending a reply on the euro tail light question and I just got to thinking.  When I lived in Brea in Orange County as a young teenager, I was maybe 15 or 16 or so in 1975 or 1976 (yeah I'm old so what), my next door neighbor came home one day with his new car he just bought.  A chocolate brown metallic killer Type I.  It was already built and had BRM's on it and still had the DKP stickers in the rear window.  Now I am not certain, but maybe some of you yoo hoo's might know who's car that might have been back then,  It totally inspired me and lead me to a penniless teenage existence spending every dollar I had building something like it.  I cant really remember but I think it might have been Greg Aronsons or maybe one of Ron Flemings cars?  Anybody know that far back a super clean chocolate metallic brown Cal look with BRM's that was in DKP before 1976?  I hope I'm not off on the date it was a LONG time ago, I just know it was before I turned 16 (that was the summer of 77).
Thanks
Worm

I think the second pic is from the DKP pic shoot in the park from ... '72?  The one that has its own thread around here...

Thread?  What thread?

Mark Thurber's car influenced a friend of mine so much he built a replica! Keith Seume made up a trophy for it at the Volksworld show back in 1999-ish - Spirit of the '70's! ;D Worm, you're damn close with the Fleming and Aronson connection - Thurber was the T in FAT Performance.

That HAS to be it!  I remember that car sitting in the driveway right next door and looking at it everyday.  And you know the guy never even let me sit in it.  So, I guess I went on a mission to build one better than that.  Well after 6 Cal look cars back then and now another currently for my 16 year old son, I must STILL be trying to do so.
It's just amazing how much information you guys have at hand.  And its also amazing how popular this stuff we were doing so long ago has still stuck around.  We were just a bunch of knuckleheads trying to make our cars look good for Whittier Blvd and for the girls.  Heck, the girls hated riding in my car.  "Don't touch the windows, Are your feet clean?, I have to turn around and go the other way....I'm not gonna drive through that puddle of water..  And they would say, "It's JUST a car"  and my favorite... "Why do you have to go so fast?"   Get out!  Ha.

Thanks guys,

Worm

You forgot the ever popular "You spend more time with that car than with me." Which I respond with "The car never complains about the time I'm spending with you!"  ;D ;D

HAHAHAHA!!! So funny and VERY true! I can even back your theory/logic up, Worm. I only dated a couple of girls while I owned my '66 Bug (the one that I drove to the D.K.K. meetings/events) from 1979-1985. Soon as I sold it and only drove new watercooled VW cars, my relationships started becoming more solid.

So, lemme get this straight... if I ever decide to sell one of my cars and build another Bug, my current girlfriend will split?

Mark, you have to keep a waterpumper around for your dates and the Bug tucked away for yourself. I need to bring you back to " the light". Build another car!!!!

HAHA!! Duly noted, John. But that costs money. Something of which I have not a lot of, these days. Having said that, I relegate myself to live through you aircooled VW owners. I DID find an all original '67 white sedan while pickin' up my sons at high school, tonight. It's parked across the street from one of the kids' house that I had to drop off and it needs a lotta work. But it's all there... complete with black Calif. plates. My younger one says, "Padre, they NEVER use that car. Are you thinkin' about getting it?" I laughed and told him I'm gonna go talk to the owner(s) this week.

Conclusion: Careful what you wish for, John. Heh, heh.

(edit) Worm, sorry about highjacking your otherwise great thread.

Slinger and I were driving around Saturday in his cal look single cab... dodging puddles of water  ::) Funny... when you were 16 you aimed straight for every one!!

I've been at step one for many years, within the confines of that tiny space otherwise known as my mind. But now you've got me actually considering it. HAHA!! That aside, Wed. nights, I skate at Vans in Orange... so I had no time tonight. I'm gonna go talk to the people, tomorrow, and see if they're interested in selling it.

Check THIS out; tonight, I'm done skating and I go out to my car (decided to take the 320i out for a drive) and some cat leaves a note, wanting to buy it. Called him and told him it's not for sale. He said that mine was the cleanest one he's seen, so I told him $5K. Dude didn't even flinch. I only have $1,900 in it. He wants to see it, again, tomorrow. So, that being said, will I have enough to get me started on a '67 Sedan? I'm not gonna go all out... keepin' it stock and simple, overall. Still have my new single Four-Tuned muffler, too. Only used it for a few weeks.

Shoot me an e-mail so we don't clog up Worm's thread any further.

I don't think Worm would mind his thread getting clogged if it ends up in you buying another VW! ;) And $5000 should easily get some nice bits for that '67... ;D

So Louis, does that mean you are still 16?

At heart you bet. Your only as old as you think you are.  ;D

So, that being said, will I have enough to get me started on a '67 Sedan?

Not counting the initial purchase price I have about $4,000 in mine as it sits now. Lowered, rims & tires, rebuilt suspension, stock motor with dual kads and single qp, stock tranny, spruced up interior. (Engine had been rebuilt before I bought it.) Paint was in decent shape when I bought it but needs to be redone. I would put her at good daily driver status. But you will quickly find yourself wanting more.  ;)

Clogging MY thread..... hardly Dude.  I'm long gone done and totally enjoying seeing you get into it again.  The car Im building right now I have just over $5K in it from purchase price to now.  Its funny that in 1979 I bought a '56 and just painted it, fixed the motor etc.. and just drove it.  Now I have a '66, I replaced the gas tank, the entire front end, all wheel cylinders, blah blah blah.... everything is SO friggin' old now it all has to be redone.  Too much.  I drove my '66 last night and will again today on the way to the golf course.  Its a BLAST!  I am not looking forward to the day I hand the keys to my son.
