Last fall I got a

4.  Berg relief cover
5.  Magnum straght cuts

Very small club show in the area.  All from the same guy...he also had a set of Italian IDAs with linkage and jets...didn't have that much more $$$ with me.  2-3 will go into my 2110, 1 and 5 will probably go into my 1835...

 Well I dont have a pic of a huge mother load like that but my best swap meet find was my cherry set of made in Italy IDA's complete with NOS Deano manifolds and a nice Deano linkage for $900.00. That was a good day.   Jason

There's not usually a lot of VW stuff at swap meets in Denver. My best find, though was a nearly complete set of Bug-In plaques for $25.00. No kidding. Unfortunately, I fell on some hard times a few years ago and had to sell them. I've a nearly complete set again, but it's cost a lot more than $25.00!

I did fairly well in the Denver area... that show where I saw your car I nabbed a pair of late pop outs for $15, a Race-Trim oil cooler block off for $5, a pair of aluminium 40hp ratio rockers for $10, and a chrome 4.5" Sprint Star for $22 ;) The pop outs and Sprint Star are on my car now...

Nice picture! I guess I need to look a little more carefully. I did find an EMPI steering wheel (the woodrim one with a black padded horn button) and an E-Z-R shifter in an early 70's bug in a junkyard once. I also got a set on wood dash knobs ansd window cranks too. I didn't have a bug enough socket for the steering wheel with me so I had to buy the whole column. I think I got it all for aropund $100! I think it was in '96 or '97.

What with craiglist being free and the prices of digital cameras and computers going down all the time, swap meeting will probably keep going downhill. >:(

allthough i have bought most of my 'rare' stuff from the net, i think you are very right. i like finding some cool things at swapmeets, it makes that part so much more special as opposed to just clicking and paypaling someone... evolution baby.

It's an interesting one. You used to be reliant on a few dealers for parts and when the internet (Ebay/Samba/Other) came along it opened it up but I don't think it's bought prices down and unfortunatley there's a huge variation in the quality of sellers. I'd still rather go to a guy that has good contacts in the market and specify what I'm looking for and what condition I want it in or buy it straight off the table in front of me. I think buying off someone that knows their stuff is preferable to risking stuff that's been liberally described and turns up in crap condition from a totally unknown source on the internet. With a swap meet there's also that stuff you didn't know you wanted but can't leave sitting on the table once you've seen it. It'd be a shame if the internet ends up totally killing this off, sure there's a good side too (there's The Lounge for a start!) and I have got some good stuff on-line but...

I got a breather box that looks like a Race-Trim, only without the "Race-Trim" for $5 at Bug-In. All the sellers there thought they had solid gold >:(

Since I didn`t go to the Bug In I went to a local auto swap and found a complete set of new SCAT engine tin with a no heater doghouse shroud freshly powder coated black for $50.00.  ;D

I Found A Few Things At Bug In 33 ;D ;D  picked up a Compete Deano center pull linkage setup  $15.00 , an NOS VDO Metal case Fuel Gauge Dated 1980 $15.00, Traded My friend A Nova Part he needed for a stock Size NOS Santana Pulley in the Box, My Friend Picked up a Early Empi scooped Decklid out there is has the Empi Emblem on it but we are not sure if it is a Repop or Not he got it for $85.00 had a great time at the Bug In  ;D   there was a Guy there selling an NOS Empi Steering Wheel asking $1500.00 he was at the Wolfsburg West Picnic on Saturday and had the same wheel for Sale for $750.00  I guess he thought the Europeans have Deep Pockets LOL

They are 15". One wheel was cracked bad around the center, another was cracked on the back, welded, and cracked again. So I swapped the halfs so I have 2 solid wheels to mount my M&H DOT's on- after a good blast and polish, of course :) I paid $200, I could have talked her down more, but I'm happy with it :)

I found nothing special only "regular parts" at bugin the only cool empi stuff were at danny house and shop
I have found an empi map light in NOS at 80 usd and an 010 bosh caps in box with points in box too, an simpson helmet from 1975 in box, a bugin 31 hat (thanks richard), a pair of genune empi globe (thanks art) , an old berg shifter like new ;D at 150 usd, ........ and an empi T sender fake (thanks slingshot) in fact I was a little bit disapointed by the swap here

I scored these Bug In dash plaques at Bug In #33. These were for sale in the Nostalgia area. 8 NOS Bug In dash plaques #24-#31. Now my collection is almost complete. I need #s 20-23. I have 2 #19s for trade, who has some extra #20-23 dash plaques to trade.

yeah, that douche nozzle with the nos empi steering for $1500 was a complete asshole. after he told me the price i just started laughing and tried to explain to the dipshit that once its installed its not nos anymore and to leave it in the box as an investment so somebody else can run the price up just pisses people off. but the moron is only in this for the money. ( can you feel the love in this post)

Holy shit, nice find!

A new club outa Phlly was having their first show event. It was kinda thrown together at the last moment so the turnout was minimal but there were three folks there selling stuff. I was talking to one guy selling a set of freshly painted lowback seat frames when out of the corner of my eye I spotted something interesting. Next to the seat guy there was a dude with a dozen or so plastic bins with an assortment of greasy, rusty parts. Sticking out of one I saw the unique handle of a DDS shifter.

Now, back in the day I had one of these beauties in my '67 [circa '79 or so]. When I sold the car kept the shifter. It's been bouncing around in my toolbox for years. At sometime the shifter plate went missing, rendering the otherwise pristine shifter, useless. Over the years I've always kept an eye out for that shifter plate. Skimming through ads on the Samba and E-bay, sorting through junk piles at swap meets and such.

So there I am, five feet away from it. I smile at the seat guy, say no thanks and step over to the bin. I reach down for it and I see the handle is cracked and broken. As I start to pull it out and the shaft is rusty, and chipped.  It's missing the chrome base, and overall it's pretty much junk, but zip-tied to the base of the shifter is that elusive shifter plate! I can barely restrain myself, so biting my tongue, I ask how much. Now, understand that I probably would have paid about $100 for it. The guy looks at it, looks me in the eye, and says...

Quietly, I pay the man and walk away giddy as a school girl!

So despite the 2 hour drive, to a 40 car event, it was the best show I have been to all year!

I've had a few good deals at the swap meets over the years, like the time at vw action , back in the eighties when early on saturday morning, just as i was setting up my table of old tut to sell i spotted this guy unloading a van full of goodies, it was rammed with nos everything,Early doors, trim, lights, 25hp stuff etc so i sauntered over, trying to not look excited. He put a handfull of NOS semaphores and heart lights on the table, looked up at me and said, you can have everything for £600. Luckily that was exactly how much was in my pocket, give or take so i said "go on then" slapped the money on the table, bid him farewell and promptly spent the next 2 days selling all the stuff i didn't need. I made £3000 that weekend and had to buy a 65 split van out of the cars for sale area to get the rest home!!

Was looking at a stand that had loads of Nos panels my friend saw a 67 valance and asked how much. the guy said £35! he snapped his hand off and bought it. I then took a chance and asked how much for the 67 lid, He said £30, I contemplated kissing a man!

The brand new 145 XZX was another good one for £10 ;D

One of my fovourites was at peppercorn many moons ago, there i was mooching around looking for a bargain when i spotted on a stall a type 3 spare wheel tool kit, which is an uber rare peice of kit, much rarer than ya run of the mill bug version. Unfortunately my arch enemy parts hound was standing over it, bugger i thought, he's already captured it, but then the gods smiled down and off he trotted none the wiser (number one swap meet rule "always look up, always look down") I dashed to the tool kit, which is no mean feat with my knees i can tell you and demanded a price, which was very resonable. I took it home along witha set of nos type 3 overider bumpers and tubes that i also stumbled across and swap  the tool box with a contact of mine for 3 empi gt steering wheels,

VW Greats #1 for $15 :)

Bill Schwimmer and I were "doing" Pomona when we saw a V8 manifold with four 48IDAs on it. Paid $1200 between us – we both had customers lined up for a pair of IDAs each at about $1000 a pair (back before 'new' IDAs were available) and then Bill sold the manifold to his friend Oggie for his collection. Job done!

Or when I spotted a virtually new EMPI GT steering wheel in the V8 section at Pomona. Paid the $180 asking price for it (Bill wouldn't let me haggle) and carried it around for an hour before selling it to another guy for $325. Wish I could make $145 an hour every day...

Correction, you and Bill were playing grab-ass when your pennyless buddy Dave drug you out to the back 40 so that you could buy the IDA's that he found.  Dont you still owe me a beer?

Saturday night Sling and I are at The Wagen (Vegas VW shop, open house), having too much fun and drinking wild quantities of Jack Daniel's. A guy comes up to my GTV and asks all the usual questions like, "Is it a real one?" And so on. He tells me his brother has an EMPI exhuast for sale, here at the gathering. Suuuure he does, I'm thinking. Anyway, I'm in a good mood, so I decide to let this guy humor me, fully expecting to see a rusty Taiwan dual QP set up with EMPI embossed on the tops of the mufflers. We wander over to where his brother is, and sure as shit there is a EMPI 4 bolt header and glasspack sitting on the asphault. Well, suck me sideways!! I get the skinny from the guy, seems as if it came off of his boss' brothers car, been on there since back in the day. I call up Slinger on my cell to get him over there, there is no way I'm letting this out of my sight, or out of my gorilla death grip by that point. Conversation went something like this:

Sling: Hey what's up?
Zach: Get over here right now.
Sling: I can't, I'm talking to someone.
Zach: No, get over here now. Right fucking now. Now. Stop what you're doing and get the fuck over here right fucking now.

I think he sensed the urgency in my tone, because a few seconds later he was drooling over it, as well. The guy struck us a bit of a deal after he found out that the GTV was mine, and it would be going to a good home. Not one of us had enough cash on us, so we went dutch on it, and the rest of the night it rested happily in my back seat :) Frenchy took some time out of his night to console me, as I was pretty much in full freak out, hyperventilating mode. The header is solid as a rock still, the muffler is far from perfect, but this is the only one I've ever seen in the flesh, on or off of a car. Now it's ours.  :)

When a buddy and I saw that Saturday night, it was like a "No Brainer" who's car deserved that exhaust. Yesterday, at the Bugorama, we looked and commented that it was gone, wondering if you'd gotten it for your car Zack. Good for you!

Unfortunately, the muffler is done for. It's beat up, scraped, and I can hear remnants of fiberglass packing rolling around in it, and then pouring out the tip! So... I have already got the wheels in motion to have an exact replica made, except this time it will be in stainless steel instead of chromed steel- much easier to produce. I'll let you know if/how it goes :)

Not exactly a swap meet score, but a friend of mine works at the local VW dealership.
Up until a few months ago, it was a VW / Porsche dealer.
My friend called and asked if I wanted the Porsche signs that used to be on the outside of the building !
The double sided sign is 5' x 8' , the aluminum frame that hold both sides together and the interior lights aren't shown in the picture, but I have them also.
The Service sign is 5' x 3' and is lighted from inside as well.
It's made of very thick aluminum and is quite heavy !

I like the way the old Empi exhaust routed the noise end on the driver's side, so you can enjoy the engine tunes better...

That's what's been going through my mind the last 6 days!! I think I might bolt it on it even though the muffler is blown out... it may sound like a stinger, but it sure would look the business!! :D

If the muffler is toast, I wonder if you could carefully cut it open and repack it with fiberglass material? Have a skilled welder TIG it back together and retain that original muffler, even if it's "semi-restored"?

I've been thinking about that, too. If I can't reproduce one accurately, I might just do that.

Zach, why spend the money to buy an original and not use it, just to make a reproduction ?
I suggest having the end (s) cut with a wire cutter at the two factory welds on the muffler.
While the three pieces are seperate, have them re-chromed !
Then you can replicate the glasspack inners and have it re-welded.
Possibly buy a new glasspack cheaply for the inner s ?
The original had two chrome "covers" over the two welds to cover the discloration caused by welding.
I'm not sure, but  think I see one in your pictures.
All is left is to have the header coated and install !
I believe this would be cheaper than making a reproduction and you would still have an original with history, not a fake.

The muffler is scraped and dented quite badly, as well. It was welded after chroming on just the one end closest to the tip, so I could cut that weld and re-pack it, but I still need to straighten out the bottom side- which would be difficult. I do have one strap (that covers the welds), and it is in bad shape as well, but there is enough there to make a couple of reproductions. I also want to make a reproduction muffler or two for the guys out there who have a header and no muffler. I also want to make a reproduction in a larger size for a merged header, because the 88x82 motor I have planned will suffocate with this little header and 1 1/2" muffler. I drive my car a lot, and I want it to perform, not just be 100% period EMPI correct.
So all in all, my plan is to use this header, possibly repair the original muffler, and make a couple of accurate muffler reproductions as well as one in a larger size.

I get this today, a few issues of Rod & Custom french magazine from 82 and 83, with some nice vw-related articles. There are some bug-in reports, some great cars and some tech articles (how to drop the front of a bug with a select-a-drop kit !). If some people are interested I can scan and post the vw articles (Fabs if you don't have them ?).

Straight out of the cozy confines of my bedroom I purchased a nice steering wheel for my '66. Well, I still have to pay for it and the seller has to send it my way across the ocean. But we'll consider that done and over with, for my own peace of mind: It's Mine !!

I guess I will have to do some fabricating to make it fit, and I'm not sure if I'm keeping the Porsche logo, though it is different (in a nice way) from the leather patch on the puck. But it will fit perfectly  :) :)

The leather was ripped off and then a logo was fixed on what was left of the horn button i guess...

You might be right, after all you're the expert  ;) But it kind of looks as if it's one piece. Well we'll see if and when it arrives. I will never be able to get it to the standard of your wheel anyway  :-[

Well i'm not really an expert but i took my horn button apart and the silver part on wich the logo sits really looks like the piece under the leather on mine, also the brownish ring around it would be the copper ring that is supposed to be chromed. Mine was dead so i painted it silver gray, not really happy with it but new chrome rings are just waaay over priced.

If you ever want to put a leather logo back on it, i got mine on ebay from a guy in poland who's actually making them in skai (fake leather), and it costs about 1/10th the price of the repro leather ones i've found...

I went to the Tri-State swap meet last weekend, which is fun because it's huge and is the first real "car event" of the year in Denver. There's not usually a ton of VW stuff there, but I did pick up an NOS '67 door handle with the keys and still in the box for $10.00. I also got in an argument with a redneck selling a pair of '67 doors that he claimed were NOS. They were in nice shape and all but were painted with a yellow-ish primer. He siad they were NOS because there was no evidence of "star" washers in the holes for the screws that attach the doos to the car. I argued with him until he was pretty angry and then I left without buying them. Good times!  :D

A couple of years ago at the Portland swap meet, I spied some 56-64 Beetle vent window frames.  However, they were labeled as 52 Ford pickup.  As a good swap meet citizen, I thought I would correct this error to prevent some poor bastard from buying the wrong thing.  The seller denied they were for a VW, and was incensed at my suggestion they were VW.  He too started to get mad.  It didn't help when I pointed out the VW logo in the glass.

As Usual Nothing to Do With VW's

A couple of good purchases yesterday at Dubfreeze.
Firstly a repro Cabrio sill strengthening rail, brand new, off ebay and picked up at the show. Half the price of a new one, so happy with that.
Secondly, a pair of '68-on tombstone rear lights with the reversing light bulbholders - I should be able to run US spec red-topped lenses and stick an amber bulb in the bottom of the light for the indicators when I do the '68. It's going late model again! ;)
Finally, I managed to find a radio blanking plate with the '68/'69-only chrome trim in place, which has saved me having to find a period correct radio for the dash of the cabrio! It was less than I paid for a plain no-trim one for the last car I did, and it's in really good condition, so I'm really pleased.
Theere were some cool parts for sale, but not as much as in previous years. The German guys in the smaller hall had their usual collection of rare bits (split dash pods, door handles etc) and three deep 6 heart Fuchs, and Kinky Mick had Remotec wheels in 4 bolt and Porsche pattern, Cosmics in 4x130 and 5x130, Joe G had a set of Deano wheels and a pair of Italian IDAs, but other than that there was not a huge amount of interest, maybe because there wasn't a huge amount I needed! ??? :)

   Mark that frame is stupendous my friend!!!  good find.  I agree also that the mentioning of the club volleyball games and goings on had to do with Cal look, the roots actually.... Really the kind of thing we need more of these days probably. Please feel free to lay down a few more lines of the goings on "Way back in the 70's"  As it were.

Sadly, it was just the filter adapter. I'm still looking for the correct pump. I've heard that I can make the pump I have (flat, 3 bolt) work with the late, dished 4 bolt cam, but I'm not sure about that. I also am toying around the idea of finding a "normal" 3 bolt EMPI 821 cam... More power, I already have a filter pump that will work, and I have a stash of NOS EMPI cam gears...

Anyone got an EMPI 821?? ;)

Some stuff for the 67 @ Madera last weekend

Cruised down to Tucson for the Chirco Bugtoberfest today with my buddies and had a good time.  In the swap area I found a set of German dual port cylinder tin and asked the price.  One dollar each was the reply.  Then I was told that there was another set in there so I bought two sets of dual port cylinder tin for $4.  Not too bad...

Went to cover a church auction in the high desert area of Lake County on Saturday.  I've covered it the last four years or so, and it's actually where I bought my current daily driver, a '99 Ford Contour four-door, the car that officially removed me from air-cooled VWs as primary transport...;D  Anyhoo, I knew they had a sandrail up for bid in the auction, as well as some dune buggy parts.  Ever optimistic, I figured I'd see what was up for grabs.

Bottom line, as the pic indicates, lots of stuff, some not so hot, but quite a few items I can likely resale and make my money back and then some, I hope.  Even some usable stuff, too.  What appears to be a 69mm crank, eight-dowell and I believe counterweighted, a chrome Baja QP exhaust (my buddy needs it for his Baja), a set of 92mm pistons and cylinders, a brand new set of rings to go with them, and a few other neato things.

A lot of it is buggy or baja related, so I'm probably going to try and pass much of it down the line to off-road guys.

Sweet, I'd love to find a set of Dellorto air cleaner tops!

A few weekends ago at the Vegas Bug-O-Rama I spotted some old Weber carbs in the swap section. 36DCF's they were... My first thought (and hope!) was that they were Ferrari carbs, so I broke out my mobile and googled "Weber 36DCF". Sure enough, Ferrari, Ferrari, Ferrari came up. Without even taking a close look I asked the gentleman how much, he said $50 for the box. That's a gamble I'm willing to take ;) Got them home and searched through the box, found 2 sets of 37mm IDA venturies which I quickly sold for $40, and a few other misc Weber IDF items that I gave to Slinger. Put the rest on eBay last Saturday, and they seem to be doing quite well :)

Yes, indeed :) Top priority will be paying down some bills first though. What boggles my mind is that it took me a couple months to unload my cherished Porsche Cosmics at $2650, and a week to get more than that out of some knackered old Webers. I'm pretty sure we're all messing with the wrong cars!! :D

Seems funny Does'nt it.  Take a look @ the value of the car the Cosmic's are going on , Versus  the value of the car the Webers are going on, that might explain it

I just picked up another load of parts (nothing exciting by any stretch) for $25 bucks yesterday... at the very least, I got an entire IRS transaxle that, in theory, I should be able to get a core charge from at German Transaxle in Bend to recoup my initial investment and then some... and then there's a bunch of miscellaneous stuff that I should be able to sell, hopefully, to further fund Project '70.  Always keepin' my eyes open, even if a bit of travel is involved.... I can always find a reason to make a day trip.  ;D

I ended up with all three Porsche signs from the outside of the building.
Recently I was back and one of the mechanics asked why I never bought the interior sign ?
I said I never knew there was one !
He took me over to the service side of the building and said "look up" !
Well. now it is mine and will be hanging in my garage soon !

I scored some of the ones the guy had up, but unfortunately was at work when he posted the good ones. Someone tipped him off though! :( He was a happy seller until then....now he's not coming off the rest of his stash. I got the EMPI points/condensor, 2 sets of EMPI garnish strips (1 front, 1 rear), EMPI lug nuts and a set of Durachrome Locking lugs. I'm very thankful for what I scored.

I scored a set of italian Weber 40IDFs, removed from a Limbach backup industrial engine with only 35 motohours on the clock! So they are in excellent mechanical - NOS like - condition! Thay also have cool oldschool metal and wire mesh air cleaners!

I don´t need them but they were for a nice price:-)

At a local all makes swap meet I found an older O-Berg oil filter for $10.  It has the tattle tail switch and filter screen.  I feel lucky!

I bought a Berg 69mm c/w crank, mid mount, Equalizer, O'berg, and a pair of Kadrons for $220... Then sold it all to my buddy for the same amount plus lunch.

I absolutely loved the Hurst shifter I had in my '68 daily driver a few years go... bought it off the Samba for $25, only missing the plastic boot.  Great shifter for a taller driver like me (6'2, 6'3-ish).  ;D

I hit up an all makes automotive swap EARLY this morning, an old guy wanted all his VW stuff gone so I obliged :) I bought short axles and tubes, '67 axles and tubes, a virgin German dual pressure case, stock flywheel, chopped & 8 doweled flywheel, a pair of CV's, pair of tie rod ends, and a set of lifters NIB, all for $25. :)

Tell me about it.
I started with a bartered for Johnie's Speed and Chrome 150 mph speedo and sold it for $125.
Then went looking for something for my car.
Now I have three different Tachs, the 120 mph speedo above, and a bunch of the little support gauges to go with them.

Like a lady with her shoes, I don't care what I have at home I still want to look at more.

Amen! After burying myself in actual car projects I found it a lot easier to collect gauges, carburetors, distributors, and wheels. Each one doesn't need a garage.  ::)

And good job on the Johnny's Peel & Fade gauge. As happy as I was when the shop I worked at outlived it, I still miss that place.

Took a quick trip to the Das Volks show in Calgary this weekend. Nice event in a beautiful park but they don't have much for a swap.

Only three swap spots but did manage to find a few good deals.

I found a nice NOS 041 head, some NOS head light retainers, Osram bulb kit, a very cool EMPI Imp instruction manual, DDS and EMPI price sheets from 70-72 and a few other items.

Only problem was I only had a carry on backpack for the flight home. As I was looking around the swap spot I saw an old box in the back of one of the swap trucks. I had a look and it turned out to be a very cool vintage RCAF case..................best part only $5

Well at SCC I "scored".............

A VDO jet cockpit Amp gauge for 50nok (around £6.00!)

And a NOS VW shifter coupling again for 50nok (around £6.00!)

Scored 6 empi gauges one set sold while at the show and I kept these gauges (the better ones) for my squareback. The dash panels are for sale if interested check my ads.

I don't know about you guys but to me, seeing a recent swap meet or e-bay score here, and then two weeks later, the same parts for sale elsewhere, is getting a little old.

Agreed, been thinking the same thing. Too much gloating then selling, kinda odd/unique compared to most on here.

Nothing wrong with the gloating and then the selling it's what I & other collector's/seller's do because we do spend alot of time and $$$ looking for these item's for other's to purchase.. What's wrong with that... ??? I don't see anything wrong with that because you can't keep everything you find otherwise an individual would have tooo much of the same thing just sitting on the shelf in the rafters etc....When one find's something why not sell it to someone who really would use it and appreciate it more than the person that find's it and make a few buck's doing it. I've said it before and I'll say it again..where else would alot of people get thing's for their vw's if other people didn't take the time and effort to find these things for someone else to use  ::) Personally when I see pictures of fellow collector's showing off their collection I get a great feeling when I see numerous item's they've bought from me sitting on their display case or when I walk the show car area and people say "THANKYOU" for helping me get the rare unobtainable accessory for my vw  ;) Seriously  ::) in all honesty probably 3/4's of the people on this site has purchased something from me over the 20 plus year's I've been selling/buying so when I do post pic's of thing's I find and then selling it isn't such a bad thing eh !!! because it is my bread and butter and keep's my family fed  ;)

Those FF2 heads are most interesting.. These once belonged to Wayne Barrett, Kileen, TX, who ran them in both I/Gas (82x89), and in B/MC (69x89). One head dropped a valve back in the day, so they sent both back to Fumio, he eventually built a clone to the dead one, up-dated the first one, and it only took him 1-1/2 years.... Oh, and the COD bill was $1800! Notice the extra 8mm head stud on top. Compression is sky-high with 17cc in the chambers. They used to run this motor to 9600 rpm.

When I saw the port job and welding I knew it had to be a Fumio head, but the one I picked up didn't say anything. Udo Johnson saw me searching for the name, so he showed me the other head (RaceShop/ FF2).. A piece of history. Schley will go crazy with this find.

  Not found today but found at a VW show in Arkansas in late August. A pair of NOS SB-12,s. Deano said they were the best he had ever seen. I could not believe my eyes when I saw them. A very lucky find for sure.

Not today, but maybe 20+ years ago.  I just pulled them down from the attic.  They have been up there all that time.  Hard to believe I brought almost all of them home in my '66 Bug.  That's the only car I had back then.  I also ran across the original dual quiet pack exhaust I bought back in '84.  Funny how stuff accumulates...

Oh I got lucky again but this is a first for me. Early dated 7/67 empi wide 5 sprintstars all dated 7/67 and all matching #'s. I got these from the original guy that bought them brand new in 68 for his vw. He's had them all this time up until yesterday when I came across them.... They are all original paint the yellow stuff is just the clear coat flaking off from year's from exposure to the desert sun....Rare to find a matched complete set and even more rare to purchase them from someone that bought them new in 68...

I'm no expert but my guess (cloudy brain) is 1980-81....  Feel free to correct me but these were around when I was a "daily driver"  One of the best looking bends as I recall.  Great find as Ol' Tom says.

Most of the 13's I've owned were 13x5 or wider slalom wheels but this is definitely a TRUE dds drag wheel  8) Gonna clean'em up and then probably sell them  ;D let me know if you have any interest in them...I don't need them as I AM NOT A HOARDER anymore I've been cured  ::)

Yes it was a different place not the ECONOMOTOR's dealership we all are infatuated with but not the 70s repair shop either in the picture but it was a used car dealership here in Riverside I beleive it was actually just down the street from Fumio and Lee's place just off of main and the 15 freeway but not 100% sure of the location.

Found this 1959 bus engine yesterday, along with a 356 transaxle, '53 Beetle engine case, a pair of 40 Dellorto's, and some more. Totally complete and original from the air cleaner to the exhaust tip, except for the voltage regulator. Looks like it should run..

VW parts around the corner had to take a look and there they were...NOT close to perfect but empi just the same....The front bumper has one guard and the bumper stiffener the rear has the towel rails one side is 67 only the other is earlier but for $5.00 dollars I'm smiling for sure LOL.

At Phx Bug O Rama last weekend I scored two 010 distributors for $25 total and a freshly remanufactured Bosch SR17X autostick starter for $15.  It was a great weekend!!

Scored another rear original ECONO frame in great shape but the color is yellow and blue vs. the normal white/blue frames very odd but the yellow is definitely original I found an old squareback in the next town over and the guy gave it to me. I recieved the rare early type 3 rear ashtrays in the mail aswell today  :)

Walked around the swap early EARLY morning but tooo many sellers and not enough time and $$$ to buy it all. Someone had an NOS Empi gt steering wheel in the box but I missed out on it for a cool $1K DANGIT but I did score these cool things -

Yeah I was thinking the same thing LOL but the chrome on yours was much cleaner if I remember right. I have a bunch of broken ones now on my display wall thinking of cutting the centers and trying to make a couple good 15's  8) Man this is a great wheel I just wish they made it better/stronger. I had no problems with driving around with my 14's on my old bus year's ago. I got the Big wheel for free as everyone at pomona know's I like broken wheels to hang on my wall so they hook me up whenever they can.

This is the one I had, 15x8. Paid $10 at the Vegas BOR. I miss that event!!

I'm on my way home at the moment from northern california and stoped at the mcdonalds saw a bug on a tow truck looked into it and saw this empi steering wheel. It's not perfect but it's not bad either I asked the guy what's up with the bug and he said they are going to crush it. So I asked if he would sell me the steering wheel on it and he said just take it cuz it's all messed up anyway  8) So enough said it's mine now  :)

Nice score! I got an EMPI Steering wheel at a junkyard in 1995 or so. I didn't have a socket big enough so I had to buy the whole column.

Well it wasn't a swap meet but I found this sandblaster on craigslist for $50.00! It will do about 99% of the parts I need to clean for my 56 project. You just hook it to your compressor. It is also full of media so i don't even have to buy any!

6am drinking coffee doing the usual perusing of the usual vw websites and local papers and in the paper was this empi sporster and the ad read...."Get it out of my yard !!!!!!!!!!" so I took the 2 1/2 hour drive to get it and yes it has a speedwell steering wheel and the sportster looks to be on a mid late 50's shortened pan.....No motor just a roller missing the seats and the rear metal (I think) Not bad for FREE hundred  ;D yeah it's for sale if you have a taste for this cuz I don't  ;)

I went to the VW show in Springfield MO this morning and scored a few things, old dist, oval wiper arms, oval wiper wire connector thing, snowflake taillight housing and a bunch of old VW magazines. I got some old 70's Hot Vw's a Hot VW's quarterly from summer of 72, Volkswagen Greats from the 70's ect. I need some more money for my 56 project so it looks like I will have to flip them.

I first found the bent shifter at a stall and asked what he wanted for it.
He said to make an offer.
I offered him a lowball at $40.
He said for fifty I could have the Hurst and the EMPI knockoff next to it as that one had a hard plastic cover on it.
I went to $45 for the pair.

Then I went over to where my friend had a spot and spied the straight shifter in the spot next to his.
I had already picked up a new license plate frame for my square there earlier.
I asked him when he put it out and he said it was always there.
How much do you want?
Again, make offer.
For this one I offered $20 as a wicked lowball.
He wanted $30.
I countered with how about I give you $25 and this-a-here EMPI shifter that I just paid $10 for that you can sell?
Now I have two Hurst shifters for a grand total of $70.


Oh and my license plate frame....
My car has a wicked 70's vibe so this frame once removed from the California Black plate and cleaned up will be absolutley bitchin' hanging on the rear hatch...

watching the grandkids for the next 2 days and just around the corner on my walk I see wheels. Dug in the pile and scored 3 RARE original streaker wheels 2 of them are 15x4's (nice and straight) and the other is a single 15x5 (bent)  :o

Got these wheels on a trade today 2 calparts and 2 unknown wheels. I do no know the maker of the 2 wheels on the left no markings and the there is an extra reinforcement on the backside of the unknown wheels. I have 4 more of these that I've found over the years and have yet to ID the maker of the 2 wheels on the left of the picture  ???

Scored a Berg 6750 shifter for $30 last weekend. I wish I could do that EVERYDAY! Or better yet, find the Berg shifter that was for a bug and not a bus so I could put it in MY car.

Man $75.00 still can get you some gooooooood stuff at a yardsale. I scored 2 drum to drum BUS IRS tranny's that were cut at the frame so it's complete really complete and abunch of steel wheels and one single superior wide 5 slot wheel with a sand rail tire still on it.

scored this ghia with a bunch of original empi goodies maybe an original empi gtv ghia ????? Gonna research this one. Gauges , original empi sender & OG empi header  8) Theres about 10 inches of leaves inside the ghia so gonna clean it out tomorrow afternoon if it's not raining and see what else is hidden in there. Oh it came with 4 ford anglia wheels that I removed to put roller's on to get it on the trailer too.

Thanks guy's. Well it's a 64 according to the ghia gauges. The only other original empi stuff I found digg'in in the car under all the leaves was the empi compensator and the roached out empi re-useable fuel filter and on the rear window a very old Fumio sticker when riverside was still the 714 area code  ;D Don't know if I should remove the empi stuff or wait to see what the DMV say's if it's a GTV or what. But it will sit with the rest of my cars until I decide how to go about this one. As for the rear wheel wells didn't they just trim / cut them because of the 67 long axles ???

DMV won't know anything other than it's a VW. 1964 is pre GTV. Many (most) GTV's were not done by EMPI of Riverside, could have been an authorized EMPI dealer, that's why they are all different. Still a rad car.

Oh okay I was told different about the DMV paperwork but I'm cool with that. I guess it's NOT a real GTV ghia but rad like you said bro. The Fumio sticker is cool. Never had one before but sad it's on the rear window and not in my display case.

I'd love to but I won't be up there permanently for a couple months. I'm hoping to make it in time for the vintage show mid July.

I've been going to VW shows since 1989 and made it to Woodburn for the first time last year after living in Oregon for the past 12 years. I was able to bring my dog, my family and plenty of good Oregon beer. It is definitely a show I will not miss again.

Not as cool as some of the other scores on here, but I just got back from sifting through the junk a local friend was taking to the BOR tomorrow. Ended up spending $55 total for everything, and I got a complete A1 Sidewinder exhaust (with a homemade Bugpack muffler installed), 2 Dansk heater boxes with fins inside, 2 stock German heater boxes in great shape, and some other misc. crap that was being thrown out. The instant I noticed the A1 Badge welded to the collector, I started putting the parts together to see if it was a complete system, and it was.

 The sidewinder is only 1-1/2", but I can't complain about the $20 he wanted for it. Should work well on my 1915cc single port. He thought it was some homemade dune buggy exhaust system, and I didn't try to stop him from thinking that.  ::) I'll bead blast it and see about modifying the header and one pair of the heater boxes I got so I can run heat with that setup.  8)

Last week I got these really rare Bumpers for european Standard Beetles.
They still wear the original paint!  ;D

Unfortunately two bumper guards are missing. So if anybody has one or two...

Does anybody know if/how I can adapt my new Koni's meant for lowered beams to my non-lowered beam? Or do I have to wait until I get a lowered beam?

Is it a ball joint beam?  If so it is very easy to extend the shock with some over the counter hardware.  One end has an 8mm stud and the other end has an 8mm threaded hex body (female) end.  I have some if you can't find them...

Yes it's a balljoint beam. In my pic (link above) you can see the shocks I want to use. I'll see if I can find those extenders locally, and if not I will definitely take a couple of those off your hands, THANKS!! I can't wait to match up these iconic front shocks with the matching rears which are already on my car. I bought the rears 3 years ago when I was unemployed and couldn't afford buying the fronts and steering damper from the guy. Then I came across his ph number last week, called him up and he dropped the fronts and steering damper off at my work. Couldn't have been happier! The rear Konis are meant for IRS cars but fit my SA rear seemingly perfectly. According the the catalog I found online, the SA ones are cheaper than the IRS ones I have. You probably noticed the lower bushing is longer on the IRS shocks.
Check the fully extended length by jacking up the car.  Does the spring plate rest on it's ledge?  Some shocks are a bit short and the spring plate doesn't reach the ledge.  This can be bad as the shock is then the suspension limiter and it won't last long if you hit the limit.
I see in your link they have Koni yellows.  IMO those are the ones to get.

It probably says in the DE text, but it's not obvious what the difference is between the red and yellow models besides the colour. The prices match. I noticed a big improvement in handling over the whoops on the roads with the rear Koni reds over the previous KYB whites. Less rebound after the car sits down after a rise in the road. Much smoother overall. I'm interested in trying the fronts now too.

This one though, was removed from a completely dry, mostly rust free, early-60s Beetle I was led to stashed away in a shed, it was parked there in 1982.
Interesting dust layer, and this is after being bounced around in the boot over dirt roads, and also after being waved around to get rid of a lot of dust.

There are still bits and pieces of treasure out there to find.........

Good score early this morning...nothing like taking that dirt road into the high desert......Ansen wheels,stock wheels, streaker wheel, NOS Norris valve springs still in the box and a KEP stage 1 NOS pressure plate/clutch, hurst shifter, etc......

NOT the pomona swap but the craigslist ad...I just had surgery so no show's for johnny but saw the c/l ad for VW wheels & parts $30.00 for all of it. Obviously just looking at the 2 rare 15x5.5 ET wheels it was a no brainer. My son picked up the stuff and the guy gave him a bucket full of brake parts and a couple of drums. When My son came home I was stoked but almost passed out when he dumped the bucket and under all the brake parts were 2 rare nokof rudge spinners  8)

It was Slough Swapmeet today.  Managed to pick up some Hella Euro rear lights for the bus, Front bumper deluxe trim and some random tinware for the engine.

The firewall has rust but everything is solid the kid cut the clips off because the other body he was using was baja'ed and rust free traded him my 53-55 headlights for his shell  :)

Was at pomona swapping yesterday didn't walk around but the swap space next to me had these 2 steering wheels for practically nothing....I got the GT deluxe empi steering wheel missing the wood (the guy said it was wood) and the burnt 56-57 steering wheel. Got both for $25.00  8)

I've never been too fond of the Coach wheels from the 70's, but I was able to talk the owner down to $10 (from the $25 he wanted) by offering to exchange the coach wheel for an old crusty stock wheel I had laying around (so he could still drive the car).....plus I did the R&R labor for him. The chrome cleaned up nearly flawless, but the horn button and plastic housing that the horn button snap into are a little scratched and warped from the heat of the sun. Too bad the wood grain is completely worn through too. Plastic spoke covers are intact though and not damaged. I thought about doing some minimal filing/grinding on the 12 o'clock crack, filling it with epoxy, and brush painting the repair area as narrow and unnoticeable as possible. I need to see about finding a replacement horn button and the plastic part below it first, then decide if I like it enough to install in my car. Still a cool vintage find regardless.

Nice swap! I once traded a guy a stock shifter straight across for his EMPI Eliminator. It was his idea! :D

I was never a fan of those wheels either, until I saw (and later bought it) one restored in black. It completely changes the look of the wheel

Haha, that's a sweet deal! The funny part is my stock steering wheel that I traded him was really messed up. Before I got my repo flat 4 wooden wheel years ago, I had a really nice original wheel that I had polished out and installed a new horn button and chrome half ring on (before the aftermarket stock wheels were out being produced), but my dad wanted to use it in his restored car so I gave it to him and installed the messed up wheel with a half-assed "restoration" (term used LOOSELY here!) done to it.....which included super gluing the cracks, sanding the super glue down, and then spray painting the wheel satin black. The cracked horn button was painted that color too, and the broken portion of the horn ring was ground down flush  and painted aluminum color (to look like it was supposed to be just the straight bar going across the spokes).

 I'm pretty sure that was one of my worst "hack" jobs ever ($3 super glue + $1.99 "Do-it-rite" hardware store brand spray can = Restoration  ???). He thought it was professionally restored, and I forgot to stop and correct him on that. ::) I always like that feeling when you score big and the other person thinks they're screwing you over royally.  ;)

I thought about doing a proper restoration on this wheel and either painting the rim black as you mentioned, or painting it the color of the interior (grey), or the color I'd like the interior to be (red). Another horn button would look better too, preferably not a coach button.  I'm still laughing at him for calling the coach wheel a "off road dune buggy" steering wheel. He must know some guys with really nice dune buggies!

AWSOME score for sure....Good candidate to paint black  :) just take the plastic horncover part off and heat it with a heat gun and reshape it round again....That has alway's worked for me  ;)

That's an EMPI Tach for a corvair cool piece. Never heard of anyone turning it into one for a 4 cylinder although I know Hollywood speedo can do it.

went back to the same guy with the parts I scored yesterday and he gave me more stuff LOL.....He had another Empi corvair tach but this time it was New Old STock in the box...and ofcourse more JSC goodies...Again check my ads if anything interests you....

That looks like the original style fuel filter in the corner of the last pic. They were glass and could be cleaned out and reused. Most of them got thrown away and replaced with the disposable plastic ones. I think they were normally on gas heaters though.

walked one swapmeet isle and halfway down saw and scored some rare type 3 accessory towel rails and bumper guard and a single type 3 vent scoop. Just need 2 more pieces to complete my second set of these.

Well ended up at Kelly park for the first time in 10 years. Very slim pickings I found a few cool things but sold them as I already had a few of those items. But this Sweet copper hurst shifter was there and I got it for only $5.00 dollars LOL...Didn't look like it does in the pic it was tarnished but 5 minutes of alittle elbow grease and mothers polish and it came out nice.

This past Saturday Bugformance San Jose held their annual Open House & BBQ prior to this weekends Kelley Park Vintage VW show on Sunday.  Well since the owner is closing up shop by the end of the month he let folks pretty much wonder around wherever looking for goodies to buy.  I went up to the attic and found a set of 48 dellortos....snagged em for the grand total of $75  8) 8) 8)

another massive score last nite. Sorted it all out today. Lotsa Porsche seats , Porsche 356 C rims, OG westy bus rack, lotsa motors, 48 IDA's, 40 IDF's, 45-48 Dellortos lotsa wheels and misc. vintage speed and vintage VW parts. This has been a dead thread a long time so I thought I would revive it and share a pretty cool find. Found this attached to the pedal assy. On an old 53 oval filled with Empi parts but you’ve seen all that stuff before so I thought I would share the one thing I’ve never seen it’s a vintage Fulton accelerator pedal usually found on old fords but this one Was in my oval I purchased.
