Title: US built roll cage legal for the uk ??
Post by: Rocket Ron on February 25, 2008, 12:22:11 pm
Hi Uk racers.

What spec does the roll cage have to be, to be legal to run in the uk. I am looking at a us part built race car and I know the regs differ from the uk. Any tips on the wall thickness etc would be great.

regards Ron

Hey Ron,

Here is the section on roll cages from the MSA rule book 2007:
http://www.vwdrc.com/files/roll.pdf

You need accrobat reader to view it, I believe it should still be all up to date as I don't think there are any major changes for 2008, maybe a VWDRC or OFF guy can confirm.

Cheers,
Rob.

Sorry dude, not sure on changes to cages since I stopped racing in 2005. The cage spec should be much the same if it is a recent build, but the times that we require them over here are different to the states. For example, a 14 second car here needs a 6 point cage, but you don't need one in the States until 10.00! A low 11 second car there will only need a four or five point bar, but here you need the works, due swingaxle VWs being seen as less stable at top of track (which indeed they are!). I'm sure someone else will confirm, but 1 5/8" diameter CDS, 3mm wall thickness is what you need.

I had a email with then cage specs this morning. The cage has had all the welds ground flat and smoothed,  also the guy selling the car now wants it to stay in the US so looks like its not going to happen

thanks anyway

if the welds have been ground - walk away. The weld should be visible so that quality can be seen.

Thanks Neil.

As soon as I knew the welds were ground off i knew the deal was off and I think the seller knew that also.   Why would you do that??

Probably means it was done in MIG by a crap welder, and if done in MIG it's a home job, no pro builders use MIG on cages.
