Title: Would this be of any help?
Post by: Jim Ratto on March 18, 2008, 15:51:36 pm
I thought I might post a "how to" series on assembling complete hot rodded VW engines, from hardware, to cam timing, geometry, deck cc, all the way to setting up carburetors.

I have a 1800cc and 2332cc motor still yet to finish. Would pics along the way and explanation help anybody out here?

Jim

If you can find the time for that. Cool topic Jim! Might be getting longer than the Tunes topic ;D

I think that would be great Jim. I would suggest maybe 2 topics... one for the how to sequence and another of comments questions etc. so those don't clutter the main thread.

I'm down for some info.  Something like Rrrrrrrick suggested, also...maybe lock the original to replies and open a second for questions?  Might turn into a mess otherwise.

Ok guys, I will pursue it, and hopefully we can figure out a way to post the progress and have back and forth conversation without mucking things up and posting on and on for 6,000 pages, with posts about other crap. I'm helping one of the Loungers at the moment get his hot 1914 together from the first blast of compressed air to getting carbs set up right once it runs. Maybe we can tie this all together for anybody who's interested.

thanks for feedback. Should be fun.

Sounds like a great idea if you are willing to do it Jim. :)

I like the ideas (from Rick and Javabug) of two seperate threads running in parallel - one as a locked one that Jim has access to, to post the steps on, and onother one that is open to comments from everyone. Both as stickies in the same area would keep them both together. If there is to be more than one engine build, just another Jim-only locked and stickied thread could be created and the one comments thread could be continued.

Would a Tech forum be useful as somewhere to put this in or is it better just being stickied in the In Da Werks area? Would anyone else want to put How-to articles together, maybe Danny Gabbard doing a tutorial on bodywork for example? ???

Cool guys, all sounds good... thanks again for your feedback.

Before I start the new post for the how-to on the engines, are there any specific questions anybody has so I know to maybe incorporate that into the posts and pictures?

I had some good ideas this morning for the posts, and later tonight I will start two posts:

One, the first, with the sequential steps for getting parts together, a pic and description of each part, including hardware,  and how to do the checking on cam timing, all clearances, etc.

The second post will be for dialogue back and forth about first post. I was thinking about numbering each post in the how to, with pics, so we can all easily refer back, etc.

How's that sound?

Thanks,
Jim
