Title: FOR SALE: 67 Cal-look bug
Post by: mcvw on March 26, 2008, 16:41:35 pm
Hi,

In order to fund our next bus purchase - and also mostly for reasons of practicality - the bug's gonna have to make way  :-\

For those who are interested I can put together a better spec later, but for now...

- Gearbox: stock, 1200 - was serviced/rebuilt by CogBox back in 98/99

- Brakes: stock, but all new parts, pipes, hoses and drums all-round

- Suspension: Bugpack blues on the front, KYB's (I think - if not, stock) on the rear. Beam came with car when I bought it. PO said it was a "Puma" adjustable beam. Pretty sure it's narrowed, but have never measured it.

- Engine: 1776. Jeff Denham heads (40 x 35.5, cc'd, ported & polished, 3-angle valve job - if you know Jeffs work - you'll know how good these are), genuine Okrasa 69mm c/w crank, twin Weber 44 IDF's, match ported manifolds, Berg linkage, Berg breather, Berg bolt-together rockers, Berg elephants feet, fully-flowed case, deep sump, external oil-cooler, Pertronix ignition, ceramic header, Tiger muffler. Engine was assembled by CogBox, and regularly serviced by Ian Clarke (@ WPS).

- Body: dechromed, NOS GT bug black window trim, Talbert Berlin mirrors, Berg shifter, VDO gauges, Haneline door post & headlight bucket trim, all-steel decklid with flared nostrils/eyebrows, NOS rear valance, ERCO's.

As you can see, it's not stock - but could be returned to stock very easily. Simply drill some holes for the trim, raise her front up, fit some indicators on the wing tops, swap the decklid (I also have a matching original style - with the volkswagen script on it) and put some steel wheels on. Or alternatively make her a "sleeper"  8) You might also want to put a 1200 lump in the back too  ???

Best 1/4 mile (from memory) was just under 15 seconds (14.9 summat) at Santa Pod - back in 2001/02 or so. And I'm sure there's more to be had out of this motor  ;)

£price is dependant upon how it's sold - i.e. stock or as is. If it's of any use the agreed value for the insurance is £12k. I'm open to offers in stock-form (i.e. I remove all the trick bits) or as is. Our next purchase is going to be a 68 deluxe tintop so if you have one we may consider a px + cash...

Car is located approx 3 miles from Sandown Park - handy if you're at the Volksworld show next weekend. PM me for more details/arrange viewing etc.

Thank you,

Mike

Hi Speedwell,

Thanks for the comments - it's makes your day when people remember your car - especially when it was from nearly 10 years ago :)

And, yes, you are correct. In the early days (when she was at the Volksworld show and in the mag) she did have buggy bars and early Fuch's.

I still have the buggy bars, and they can still be fitted - although not at the rear as they would foul the Tiger muffler (when they were fitted previously I was running a Berg dual-muffler).

Thanks again  :)

Cheers,

Mike

Hmmm  :-\

Should I remove all the cool bits from the car and sell it as a stocker?

Still find myself drooling over your car in Volksworld years after it was featured...

One of my fave ever UK cal look bugs.

Kaferboy: Thanks for the kind words :)

But that's the thing... I still drool over it too... I totally love this car to bits, and I know I'll probably not build another bug to the same spec again... But drooling is as far as it goes. I simply don't get anywhere near enough time to appreciate it :(

Perhaps I'll put the front buggy-bar back on just for all you droolers out there  :D

This engine has only done 7700 miles since it was built... which gives you an idea of how much this car has been used (or not used!) over the past ten years...

Less than 1000 miles a year on a car like this - that's almost a criminal offence ;)

Should mention that car will be sold with a full years MOT...

Can put stock wheels  & o.e.m decklid back on for those that don't like ERCO's (but I can't think who that might be ;) )

Have decided the motor is too sweet to part with...

So... get yourself a cool cal-looker - just add the HP and you'll be the new cheshire cat  ;D

Offers to the usual address please... ;)
