Hey Derek (kafercup).... why don't you hand out some cold beers and tell us WTF is going on with your car? Sounds like some cool stuff is gonna be on your porch soon, huh?

 ;D

944 Turbo brakes front and rear should be mounted up withing the week :)

Oh, and full stainless 1 3/4" Tiger Sidewinder exhaust with polished stainless muffler and v-band should be done in about a week also.

I'm going to work on installing the Accusump system with the remote activation valve in the next couple of weeks.

As soon as the heads come in and Ratto has time, we can start getting the 2332 monster together  ;D

And, yes I know this isn't Cal-Look  ;D

I've always loved the true Cal-Look, but I always seem to find myself straying back toward the German Kafer-Cup machines (hence the username).

One day i'll have a nice Cal-Looker next to the monster in the garage.

Now I need to decide on a paint scheme because once all the mechanicals are sorted, it'll be time for a trip to the body shop.  8)

It'd be a shame not to use it.  It'd look so pretty in there and it sure would be nice to have the peace of mind of that system.

That's actually one of the pictures I have on my computer as an example.  I want to do a similar scheme, but probably just carry the stripe straight down the front instead of flaring it out.

i like the nuber 22 as well, it has the cockpit painted in orange (not completely correct but, the bottom looks nice as well with the orange running along the runningboards.)

Yeah, I like the simpler straight stripe like this:

The swooping front orange detail works nicely on the 917's body lines, but with the shape of the bug, especially in side profile with the rounded fenders and running boards, I think the swooping detail would look a bit awkward.

I'd say, for as long as we've talked about "doing it Gulf", you should really just do it, Derek. Those that "get it" will really dig it, especially with powertrain and underpinnings of your car. Hard to imagine it was once an Orange Autostick stocker...  hahahaha

Any way to make 907/908 center-lock magnesium wheels work on those hubs?  ;D

You'll have to change your last name to "Bell" once the car is done.

I wonder if Tiger could have made a header with collector up next to transaxle and dumping out under running board, then we could make your motor a dry sump.

Oh.... just thinking again.....  sorry....  I am spending your money in my dreams.  Ha! ;D

hey Derek... you knucklehead.... WTF's that Facet clicker pump doing on your car? Are you using it for a windshield washer pump? I know you're not using that for a fuel pump.

hey how's that 1641 Kadron motor coming?

Actually, i've decided to go with a twincharged (super and turbocharged) 1300 for overall fuel economy.  The facet was just there to help drain the tank.  I think i'm just going to mount a squeeze bulb in the fuel line and place it next to the shifter so I can just pump the fuel thru myself.  That way I won't have to worry about the noise of those ridiculous electric pumps.

I agree, those 928S wheels look right @ home buddy.

This car is getting the next (and hopefully last) motor to come off my stand: 2332, 84mm Bugpack 912 journal, 5.600 old Bugpack race rods, 94mm/long barrels, 11.5:1, CB ultra wedgeport w/ LS1 springs, Engle FK89, 48IDA w/ big vents, 1-7/8 Tiger header/muffler, Mallory mag. It might go pretty good.

What? Hold on... back the truck up 'bout 10". So we're NOT going to build my 2,800cc engine with 51mm IDAs? Bummer. I was so looking forward to that. (sigh) After that car that Schwimmer and I took a drive in the other night, I'm considering going that route. We'll see.

Derek, what style header system did you go with from Tiger... the conventional or sidewinder merged collector?

The merge, conventional and sidewinder headers all taste alike. Hold your nose and take a bite of each one. They will all taste sweet.

I retract my earlier post about the cage. :D ;D

It's this coming weekend and the boys will be there with me for one of the days :)

:)  I'd have to say, this car was the original inspiration for me.  Dr. Josef Gerold's 226 horse Kafer-Cup monster.....

Hey Derek, you are building a nice car(and nice inspiration car for sure)
I had the chance to see the "käfercup"-raceseries live a few times in the late 90's,it was great.
(don't believe that dr.Gerold was in the cup at that time,I have to check my pics)   ;)

I wish I could have seen it in person.  I was in Germany for a bit during that time, but missed the races.  You wouldn't happen to have any cool pics or memorabilia from the series that you might be willing to share/part with?  I'm looking for videos, pics, programs, posters....... i've been searching for years!

Hi Derek,

it's a nice project you've going on. I've been involved in the Käfer-Cup since the early 90's as a mechanic and participated in the last season before it's demise in 1999. The highlight was in 1995, we were overall Käfer-Cup-Champion with my buddy's 1302. I still got my car (1303 RHD), it's sitting there without gearbox but a brand new 2.0l Type1, waiting for the things to come...

I'm still in touch with some of the guys, very few of them are still racing today. Some weeks ago I went to the Salzburgring/Austria to watch some of them and have a chat. Thomas Wöhr was there to bring his 1303 to the track first time with his brand new OHC Type4.

I also met Rolf and Kurt Hassmann. Kurt still races his 1303

I'll never forget the battles between Walter Schäfer (Type1) vs. Dr. Josef Gerold (Type4). Those were the good times. Walter lives not far from me, he still has his car. He was at the Jochpass Memorial Hillclimb Race for some time but does not race on regular basis. Josef still has his cars too, I heard he had health problems but seems to be OK again. At the Käfer-Cup he used to race the 1302 (painted pink inside). We called that car "Doc 1". Later he built "Doc 2" (painted turquoise inside), a Monster of a 1303. He participated at the german Divinol Cup together with some other survivors of the Käfer Cup.

This is a shot of my friend Elmar Sperber (P.I.P. buddy), he really was a hell of a driver...

Saludos,
Ole

wow, thanks for the pics and the cool background information!  ;D

For a while (in the 90's), I was in regular contact with Klaus Morhammer who was one of the organizers, but I never got a chance to get too much from him as far as pics or videos.  I did get several of the official race posters from the series which are framed and hanging on my garage wall.

A few years ago I almost had my hands on an original, unused full set of the official "kafer-cup" sponsor and series decals, but it slipped away.  Anyone out there have a lead on any goodies like this?  :)

I've got a good recipe for banana bread.

[initiate thread derailment sequence commands] An apple, onion, and potato all have the same taste. The differences in flavor are caused by their smell. To prove this - pinch your nose and take a bite from each. They will all taste sweet.[/initiate thread derailment sequence commands]

Derek, what style header system did you go with from Tiger... the conventional or sidewinder merged collector?

i went with the red onion,  oops I mean 1 3/4 full stainless (including the flanges) sidewinder with the v-band and polished muffler.  Yummy.......

Your not gonna like shining your muffler every week but still a great choice...  ;) 8)
sarge keeps offering to come over and " buff " my "muffler "! should i trust him ?

Hey Guys --- I planning on going to the salt with the oval this year and was thinking of doing a front spoiler like on the Kafer cars or maybe like a spliter off a NASCAR  --- They look like they are attached to the front bumper and that is kinda what I was thinking about doing -- -- Does anyone have any pictures of how they are/were mounted???????
