Title: remember all the mufflers in the 80's designed to clear driveways?
Post by: Jim Ratto on April 29, 2008, 19:47:07 pm
more memories from the Negative Camber Years....   that the industry introduced all kinds of new muffler designs to help the muffler survive going up and down driveways. Such "sano" designs as the Phoenix dual or single hideaway QP that went veritcally up in fender(s) behind rear tire. Or the Topline (?..... I seem to remember they had the first ad for it) Turbo Trip muffler that was made in two versions, one tucked up next to RH valve cover and had tailpipe dumping down inside fender (for street headers) and the one that rode along under RH valve cover, with tailpipe that turned down just behind RH tire.
Seems the standard QP's would be scrped though in a week or so on cars that were dumped in the rear. I remember a friend of mine, Lars, drove a '64 Notch with 1835, K8, 42DCNFs and it was on the ground... he'd wipe out a pair of QP's in about an hour.

looking back over the last 21+ years at all the headers and mufflers and pipes that stuck out from under my car....  ::)

Clearace wise, the worst had to be the S&S dual aluminum cannons, but they sounded so sweet. Even with stock height rear axles, they were dust aftr a few days.

Funny how times change. Nobody bitches about mufflers dragging anymore  ;D

Maybe speedwell can scan some old ads from Hot VW's for Turbo Trip and S & S headers, Phoenix Headers, etc.
I remember drooling over S & S Rally header when I was 16, then finally got it after waiting 18 mo.... sounded incredibly mean. Looked the part too!  8)

I had one of those Bugpack turbo mufflers that sat right next to the right valve cover. It was cool, but I got tired of removing it adjust the valves. I still have one of those S&S low mount dual systems around somewhere. It sounded cool, but the mufflers used launch off of it when I shifted hard. Good times. ;D

That's cuz we're all using those big, fat, tall tires that everyone is starting to turn against! :D

Never had a problem with any of my exhaust systems. In 1979, I had a single and dual S&S quiet pack system. From 1980 till around 1982, I had a single and dual FourTuned quiet pack system. from 1982 to 1985, I had a FourTuned merged header with dual quiet packs way tucked under my car. My favorite system and never had a scraping issue with that one. On the S&S ones, sometimes I'd get a slight rub where bead was in the middle, near the header collector. I'd touch it up with flat black heat paint if they needed it. My FourTuned systems were great in looks and performance. I miss them a lot. I still have a new single q.p. of their's.

I guess I've always taken great care when driving my lowered cars in/out of driveways. Always hit 'em at an angle and never straight on. And slow, too. It just didn't make sense to scrape up something that we worked so hard for. But... to each their own. I'm sure my new A1 system will have even more ground clearance.

Well, I care about ground clearance and this is one of the most important factors I take into account while looking for a new exhaust system. Unfortunately, this makes the choice limited.
For me, when you have to think about your muffler each time you have to cross the kerb (something you rarely do in US, but quite often here) it means that it's in a wrong place.
