Title: Porsche 917 for Ratto
Post by: team97 on May 05, 2008, 16:41:32 pm
From what I could tell, this is a REAL 917, aircooled flat 12, Old Dunlop treaded race tires ETC. Possible repop? but NOT a kitcar. Spotted at Cars and Coffee on Saturday morning, this thing was bitchen.

I think if there was ever a car I would want to drive (ok, just even sit in while motor was running) before I die.... this would be it.
I cannot imagine what it would be like to pilot such a unrestrained animal on the street. Or how the rest of street traffic would react!
over 600hp available and under 1800lbs to move. They went 236mph @ Le Mans. On the street. That's unreal.

Next thing you know, some guy will be street-driving a 917/30 donohue car.

There was a guy in Newport Beach that had a street legal McLaren M6GT that he would drive regularly... as regularly as you could drive a car like that... I remember seeing it several times in the mid 70s just driving around.

I hear ya on that, Ratto... for me, it's always been about doing the same thing with this car:

Great Gulf 917 pictures. If it weren't for the cat talkin' on the cell phone, those pics would be timeless and could look like any era.

speaking of 917's.... here's the "917" sheep's parents had and that he went to school in.

It was not a 917-L, but a L-917...   "L" for LASER

I like the Cragar wheels. An authentic touch.

The top one is not a real 917.  There are a couple companies making suprisingly accurate replicas with tube chassis and everything.  The main problem is finding one of those pesky flat 12's so most use 911 motors.  I would LOVE to drive one!  ;D

Continuing the theme, here are a couple pics I took at Rennsport last fall.  The Martini car was raced at Spa by Dr. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennop in 71 and promptly stored away.  It is exactly as it rolled off teh track in 1971 with fiberglass cracks and all!  :)

I had a rare chance to drive a 917 from Michael Liebermann collection in Beverly Hills. Problem is I couldn't get it into 3rd. gear just not enough road and only around the block. That flat 12 is awesome.Entering through the passenger side is a trip too. The Ferrari F50 was more drivable only problem was braking. Almost rear ended the car in front of me.I had to literly ride the brakes a short time to heat up the massive carbon rotors so they would stick.
