Nope, it doesnt have anything to do with the gears themselves.

I found that the Steel on steel are louder than the steel and aluminium ones. Also that lash has an effect on how quiet they are also. I have noticed that the CE ones seem to be louder than the cb ones. I have always wondered which ones the sloval used, that car was/is loud as hell. I also have used magnums and Gear ones, they both are much quieter.

Which way are you more inclined to go with the less or more whine?.

Try Aircooled.net. Bugpack Gears, Awesome sound. But it also has a lot to do with your play on the gears, springs etc. I deburr mine completely and check with white grease how the pattern looks like.

it has to do with the fitting of the gears as well. original gears came is very different sizes. + and - 7 and everything in between if i am correct. so straight gears don't have sizes, but will be tighter or looser in your engine and make a different noise therefore as well.

Yes you are right... the howling comes from the gears being straight... but the volume comes from the case!
