Title: How Narrow??
Post by: Chris W on May 17, 2008, 17:55:58 pm
I am going to be putting some original Gas Burners on a 66 I bought and am picking up in Sacramento. I will be running Michelin 145's with disc and drop spindles which will add about 3/8 per side. I am thinking a 2" narrowed beam will work out fine, any other input for anyone running a similar set up?

What I am going for looks wise.. Pictures from

42mm is what I read...I will double check when I get home.   :)

2inch narrowed beam should be fine.the gasburners have good offset i think its et35 so even with drop spindles it should be fine.are the wheels genuine or copies?

They are real....I think it will be perfect with the CB beam. I found info on the last picture I posted and it's a 2" narrowed CB beam.

I got 145/15 on droped disc spindels, but have the new ball joint beam (stock) on my 66 with original "burners" an it works fine....

That great. Looks like I will give it a go on the stock beam...

48IDA66 any more pictures of your car, and what tire size are you running?

the last 2 pics look awesome!
but is it just due to the tiny offset of the burners??

otherwise i'd give it a go as well ;D
until i step up to fooks i suppose...

A friend of mine has a 65 with stock beam (linkpin), CB drop spindles and discs, Gasburners and 185/65 tires. Works fine, so you should have no problems when running 145's.
The rear is another issue.. He is running the same wheel/tire combo in the rear, and even after changing to long axles and with 5mm spacers the wheels are not quite far enough out of the fender.. If you are running wider tires than the 185's that would help.

I will be running 205 70's in back.

Maybe mock everything up on the stock beam and take a good look at it (rears on too)... then you can be sure what you need to do.

. It's much harder to narrow later on.
How so?  The amount of work to narrow a beam doen't change with time.  The work is what it is.

Mahle wheels have the same offset as a stock wheel.  ½" extra on the inside, ½" extra on the outside. 42mm offset.  Other than the 7R Fuchs, this is equal to, or greater than the offset of all Fuchs.  Big offset means no narrowed beam needed.
Narrowing the beam then putting on wheel spacers is foolish, IMO.  When you chop a beam, the left tie rod gets shorter, magnifying the effects of bump steer.  Since Chris actually drives his cars, this would translate into excessive tire wear if he throws a tool box up front.

Hey Bruce, I do plan to drive this car more than I did my last one thats why it's not going to be super low. I am going to give it a try with the stock beam first no adjusters just drop spindles. I am picking up the car this next weekend   ;D

A wise decision... stock beams are the way to go. Handle and look way better. But to each their own.

Thanks guys, I did not want to detail them as the car is a bit rough around the edges. I just picked up the later tie rod ends I needed so I am almost there  :)

Cool!  I must add my approval of the original finish Gasburners.  So many of them have been detail painted, I'm over that look.  All grey is where it is at.  One of my fav's is UD's old black '67 with OEM 'burners.
