Title: July Hot Rod Post by: Sarge on May 22, 2008, 17:18:31 pm The latest issue of Hot Rod came in the mail yesterday. Along with this years Ridler Award winner (the holy grail of awards for hot rodding) won by a Ferrari V8 mid-engined powered 1960 Rambler American wagon is a feature on the VW Rat Rod of Franz Muhr / John Dixon! I know it's not Cal-Look, but still nice to see "something" VW in a magazine dominated by American water pumpers.
Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: louisb on May 22, 2008, 18:27:18 pm cool car.
A few years ago one of the hot rod mags had a concept drawing of a mid engined 27 t bucket that was built with a unibody structure. (tubular front and rear sub-frames mounted to a central aluminum tub.) That has always stuck with me. (Hang on I am getting to the VW content) I have lately been thinking about a more traditional tube frame chasis based 27 t with a mid mounted VW engine. All aluminum body with a track style nose. Some Halibrand Kidney Bean style wheels. Sort of a dry lakes or early Indy car feel. 48's with the velocity stacks stick up through holes right behind the passenger's compartment. One day. --louis Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: Rick Meredith on May 22, 2008, 18:33:59 pm cool car. Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: javabug on May 22, 2008, 19:48:30 pm I dig the wagon. Reminds me every so slightly of a Squareback.
Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: Chuck Fryer on May 22, 2008, 20:01:15 pm I know the ford/ vw/ porsche truck is completely off topic but Walt has some fab skills fo sho!
Here is a link to more pictures of it: http://www.walts.info/truck_home.htm The wagon does have a squareback look to it. Would have almost been easier to start from scratch though. And I agree, that wagon does resemble a squareback. --louis Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: Sarge on May 22, 2008, 20:40:20 pm Nice link, Chuck...I like the rear shock absorber treatment! After having two mid-engine sandrails, the thought of building a like car with a Fiat Tupolino body for the street has been in the back of my head for a while. A good excuse to put those Halibrand spindle mounts under the workbench to good use ::). Here's the interior of the Rambler...SICK!!
Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: louisb on May 22, 2008, 20:44:49 pm Sarge, wasn't it you who mentioned you liked Willys? Check out this guys work. He rebuilds them for a living. All work is done by hand.

I seem to have a lot of car projects I would like to do...especially after reading Rodder's Journal ::) ;D! I'll always be a VW guy, though. Anything else just wouldn't seem right. That Willys looks like a ton of work!
Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: louisb on May 22, 2008, 21:00:24 pm Yeah, my next project after the '67 will be an early '50s Chevy pickup. So many cars, so little time. ;D

Oh Sarge, you'll beat me to it - I really fancy a fuel altered style Topolino with a big flat four in the front, IDAs or Hilborn injection sticking up either side of the body! ;) Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: TOM / EINHEIT 11 on May 23, 2008, 13:54:38 pm Jim. You are wrong. ;) THIS IS A CAL -LOOK FOR SURE. Not on Volkswagen....but that style is definitely Cal-Look.
There was a feature in a mag in the 90s of a Rampler Wagoon, build by Troy Trepanier...almost same look like this one. Baskerville of Hot Rod Magazine described it as ,, California - Look - Stylebuild ,, Hot Rod. Now ...i agree. Cal - look can be used on all makes and years of cars & bikes......because it describes a style, to build a vehicle. Dont U think the same? Anyways.........the ,, Ferrambo ,, is worth called...........BEST HOT ROD OF THE YEAR ! Cheers TOM ps: for those which wanna see how to build a car like the ,, FERRAMBO ,, http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2007/10/ferrambo-60-rambler-wagon-with-ferrari.html Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: nicolas on May 23, 2008, 18:54:20 pm yes the wagon looks very cool, it has a Kid Dean feeling to it. especially in the sidevieuw with the pillars like that.
thanks Sarge Title: Re: July Hot Rod Post by: Sarge on May 23, 2008, 20:20:46 pm That Rambler wagon is a bad-assed ride. A lotta work went into that thing. Thanks for sharing, Sarge. Your welcome!
