Title: What do you think of slot mags
Post by: alex d on October 30, 2006, 17:04:51 pm
when you look at period pics you don't see many lookers with slot mags, even if they were a popular 70s wheel, it doesn't seem to fit with the original cal look?
In fact I do like them, and I do have a set which I haven't installed yet in my car, I'll post pics when it's done  ;D

IMHO Not Cal-Look.

Slot mags would be on the same cars that had flared fenders, lots of chrome etc.

I really like slots mags with 5x205 bolt pattern, as long as they aren't buggy wheels!

If they are tucked in the fender and not sticky-outey with flared 'glass fenders, then they are all good by me :)

Came straight from Vienna via the crazy guys at the Bug Box, to Alex Taylors Defcon3 workshop to be made a tad more proper  ;D

So we have a 'factory' cal looker, a little bit of the 'Black Bitch', and Rocket Ron's looker all in the same shot  8)

ok the story of the demise of my uncles bug goes something like this.

he always had some problems with the engine detonating and he was experimenting with ways of getting round it, messing with the ignition timing, jets, even lowering and raising the compression ratio, rising it actually worked but that’s by the by. Anyway this one particular day some time in the late 70's he was out on a test drive around the local country lanes seeing if his latest mod had fixed the detonation (it hadn't  ::) ) when he went round a corner in the middle of the road he was met by a little old guy who was also driving his mini in the middle of the road in the opposite direction. My uncles recollection of the ensuing accident was that they had contact his bug bounced of the mini and veered off in to a field hitting a tree on the rear corner and bending which creased the floor pan and bent out the back wheel at 90 degrees read one scrap beetle. The mini he hit ejected both of its doors on impact and bent up the front wing. my uncle told us that the old guy just sat there in a state of shock trying to figure out what had happen, he eventually came back to this planet and agreed to give my uncle a lift home which was a 3-4 mile journey with my uncle holding both of the doors on the car while the little old guy drove :o

I think slot mags are cool. I was thinking of bidding, but just in case anyone is interested, there is a single NOS in the box wide 5 ansen on ebay.com now for a sensible price...

Si.

My personal opinion is slot mags belong on a 70s Chevy Van or a Ford Pinto Wagon and not anywhere near a Cal Look bug.

That Ebay wheel looks like an Appliance wheel to me. Ansens are marked on the back and usually have the valve stem inside the hole.

EMPI made a nice 4 lug slot mag in the 70's, my brother's EMPI demonstrator had a set. They were 4inch in front and 5's in back. He ran 145 70's in front and 185 70's in rear. It looked real clean.
