Title: Front Clip Questions
Post by: Rick Meredith on July 08, 2008, 05:30:57 am
AS you guys (and gals) know, my '67 is gonna need a front clip. I got a clip from Luke for a '63.

Last night, I was talking with Art at the DKP Cruise night and the question came up regarding the difference between the clip and th4e original sheetmetal on my car. The only thing I know of that's different is the area around the brake fluid reservoir. Art thought that there may be other differences but no one I talked to knows for sure.

SO I thought I'd throw it up here as we have a lot of people with a lot more knowledge than I have,

Thanks!

Rick, how far back on the body are you gonna use the other clip? As you know, the cowling is different on a small window car. I'm guessing that you're only going to be using just behind the apron or spare wheel well. In that case, you're correct about the brake reservoir. I can't think of what else is different. They're very close.

I don't think I'm using the cowl. just the inner & out apron and the quarter on the drivers side.

Rick, there is a similar thread floating around here - http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,5733.0.html - I think quite a few of us are going to be clipping cars in the near future! :D

As far as I know there are no other differences - still on early bumpers, flat tank, all that sort of stuff. Fairly sure that although the '63 is K&L and the '67 is BJ that the inner wings around the beam is the same too. I'd put the two side by side and look it all over - even accounting for the dents you'll still see stuff. That's what I've got to do with the '58 front end for the '51 I'll be doing next. There are some definate differences in the wheel well there, but it's closer than using Brazilian or Mexican parts! ;)

The Differences between a 63 Clip and a 67 Clip are the Brake RES,the holes in the inner panel for headlight and turn siginal wires and Boots are in a differnt location, the 1/4 panel on a 63 is different then 67 the 63 has large molding holes it has an indention for the link pin shock tower they are different where it is seemed to the cowl and the lip that folds over the seam on the door post is a little different it also has a slightly different curve to it, the 65,66,67 and newer are have a flater side then an early model if you are going to use the 63 1/4 I would not deseem the 67 at the 1/4 you would be better to butt weld it and keep the factory seem or get a 65,66,67 1/4 panel  they are the same except for the Brake RES. and the bigger molding holes, I circled the Differences on this 63 clip in Black the Original front apron on a 63 is a different stamping then a 67 Replacements are all the Same just depends how picky you are I can Tell on any car that has had one replaced, The 67 also has a bigger fuse box then 66 and older

Thanks Shubee. Looks like I'm gonna need to find a closer clip to use. Too many changes. I'm only gonna do this once so I better get it right the first time.

What you going to do with that clip? If you cut it I would be interested in the luggage shelf section if it is in good shape.

Probably gonna try to get rid of it as it stands I guess. It's complete from the pillars forward

Make sure you get a original German sheet metal replacement. The repops's only have the one hole cut out ( tear drop) for the front hood cable release.

When I replaced the complete front clip on my '67, I looked far and wide to get a nice one... And, about as far back as you can go is '66, and even this is not 100% exact! 1967s can be a real pain for the pervert.

GRRR, I just went to fit up my right front fender to my spare clip and it is off. Fits perfect on my original clip. Looking at it closer it looks like my spare clip is not square either.

something I use to do when I would clip a car, little extra work. I would make fiberglass splash of pillar one layer of glass, trim before glass kicks and get's hard. this is your cut line, make nice so when transfered to new clip to cut, nice straight line. cut clip about 1/8 long, then grind and file to fit. the pillar's are tapered so glass splash will only fit when in right location. hopefully that might help somebody.
