Anyone know the right amount to take off late drums to fit early axles

I've done two drums in a month so would like to know the correct amount to take off. Getting a little tired of ripping the splines out of the middle of the drums  leaving me with no drive as the diff is spinning the wrecked drum leaving me with no drive.   

I'm not sure about your set up Ron, I'm running short axles and late type 3 drums.

I trial fitted the drums, fitted the castle nut and tightened it, removed the nut then measured the distance from the drum hub where the nut tightens onto, to the nearest hole in the axle where the split pin passes through.  I then added onto that measurement the thickness from the back of the nut upto the slot for the split pin.  I can't remember the amount i removed, but 5mm sticks in my mind.

If your worried about removing too much material from the drum, you could perhaps remove a little from the nut also, although some may not recommend that!

It seems funny that I removed the same amount from each side but only get the problem one side ???????

I'm running late porsche pattern after market drums on early short axles

tomorrow I'm going to remove both sides and measure what i've got on both sides. I'm also using Vw ie german nuts now as I thought the first drum problem was caused by crap £3 castle nuts

Yeah that's a bit strange.  Are your axle spline's in good condition?

I'll measure mine tomorrow and get back to you.

I think its 5/8 of an inch its the same thickness as the thick axle spacer

Check your axle bearing on the side that keeps grenading, that could be your problem.

I'll get the thickness of my brake disc spacer measured up in a bit, i've got them on my rear discs  ;D

Had to do the same thing on my car with type 3 drums. Ended up taking 5/16 off of the snout of the drum to get it to fit properly.

I'm not sure if your any further on Ron, but here are my measurements....

Thickness of drum spline: 50.95mm
Thickness of nut, from rear of nut to slot for split pin: 9.1mm

I measured the axle spline from the bearing carrier to the end of the splines and this was 43.5mm.

The story so far

I've taken off the drums on both sides and measured up things, the new race axles I've just put in the last month are ever so slightly longer. After ringing round some friends running race axles I’ve been told this is quite common.

I'm having the drum machined down to the same dimensions as the other side that hasn’t caused me any trouble and having 2mm spacers made up. Hopefully this will keep things nice and tight and the same on both sides.

I will pass on your measurements to “boom boom” who is machining everything up for me.
