Title: Gear Lever Help!! Who Knows... Post by: plasticblack on July 23, 2008, 17:46:22 pm Can anyone tell me what VW this Gear lever is from please? ???
I've had this for years (about 15!) and haven't found out yet what model it was fitted to. As you can see its a cranked (angled) lever, just like models up to 1967ish. It also has the lock pin in the base ball, meaning it's a straight ahead type lever, not the type you can spin round and round. The odd thing is that it is the later (1968 on) type lever with the thicker hollow shaft. It takes the later gear knob size also? What '68 and later VW model has the shift shaft with the notch to take this lever? It did have a part number (on a Genuine VW Parts Picking Slip) whic I've sadly lost over the years and countless house moves.. I remember clearly the Part Number began 113 711 - - - D ? This indicates that the part was first fitted or designated to the Beetle Model Range? I remember checking out the full part number years ago (I worked in the VW Dealer Parts Department..) but I could not trace it, even in the deleted, superceded part number listings. It was like the Part never existed?? Perhaps I'm being really stupid and the answer in obvious! But i'm getting older and slightly more senile so help me out here!!!!!!! Is it a Foriegn Market Specification that somebody has come across before? I though it might be Military for the Trekker or something... Post by: Shubee2 (DSK) on July 24, 2008, 03:32:37 am All VW stock shifters that have a curve in then all use the notched shift tube and have the Guide Pin I would Say its From A Ghia and pre 65, 65 and older shifters were Ivory in color and the real early Ghia had the 10 MM thread other shifters were 7 MM in 66 VW started using Black Shifters,E Brake Handels, and steering coluum tubes, 67 was the first year for black dash knobs

Early Bugs & Ghias up to about 1960 all have the same type of lever (Oval Type) From 1960 to 1967 the lever gets thinner, but is still angled/cranked. 1967 has the same '60-'67 thin type lever, but it's painted Black from the Factory instead of Ivory. This lever is '68 onwards... for somethng???? Title: Re: Gear Lever Help!! Who Knows... Post by: plasticblack on July 25, 2008, 07:42:05 am It would seem after 60+ viewings that nobody has any idea about this item ???
I'm kind of not surprised really... It's stumped me for many years. One day perhaps I'll know the answer. ;) Title: Re: Gear Lever Help!! Who Knows... Post by: Lids on July 25, 2008, 19:23:01 pm this is pre 67, 68 on doesn't have the pin.
Title: Re: Gear Lever Help!! Who Knows... Post by: plasticblack on July 25, 2008, 21:05:51 pm That is my point exactly.. It has the directional pin??
But this is a '68 onwards gear lever for sure. It takes the Bigger ('68 on) gear knob. This size of gearknob did not appear until the 1968 Model Year. ie: 12 Volt, Upright headlamps etc.... The Oval type knobs (up to 1960) don't fit.. Threads Too Small The 1961-1967 type are way too small. This is from a '68 on VW... But What?? |
