Actually, no.  The name was "given" to me by Doug Haydon.  It revolved around The Phil Silvers Show (on TV in the '60's) and a character named Sergeant Bilko (a fast talking wheeler-dealer con artist type of guy...go figure!  ::) ).

Not to get too far off topic (but since Sarge's car is on the cover), I always thought that the Phil Silvers show was made in the early '60s. Turns out... it ran on CBS from '55-'59. So when I was watching it, they had already gone to syndication and reruns. Once again, Google is your friend.

 ;D

Okay, back to the book... how many pages, Keith?

Wow, Sarge thanks for the reply that was quick, didnt know you had considered selling it or i would have spoke before.... I know what you mean about your age, finding it hard to keep her in tip top condition, it must be hard.

So deal done, thanks, PM me your bank details and Ill transfer all the funds in one go, cheers  ;D

Ps LoiusB great idea !!!!

So, do I understand it that Russell just bought Sarge's car?
He's also got the inside line on an unfinished orange 67 project which has been siting around near San Diego for more years than the owner cares to remember. ;)

Affirmative. Then, it somehow ended up being mine. It's crazy.

At this rate, Russel will have more DKP cars than DKP members.  ;D You guys are going to have to let him and Keith form a UK chapter.

Mac's have no issues. It's a matter of how fast Keith can move his fingers, and tape the millions of photos to all those pages of all those books. You'd think the publisher would , at least, send somebody over to help the poor guy!

Title: Re: At the printers as we speak…
Post by: Fastbrit on August 25, 2008, 18:10:58 pm
Woulda had them all done by now but keep running outta Sellotape. Nearly forgot to do a left-hand drive version for you Yanks, too! Sheesh, so much to think about. And thinking' real hard at my age. Heaven knows how someone like Sarge copes… ???

Title: Re: At the printers as we speak…
Post by: John Rayburn on August 25, 2008, 18:44:54 pm
Keith, does the right hand version have the cover on the back?

Title: Re: At the printers as we speak…
Post by: Fastbrit on August 25, 2008, 19:06:08 pm
No - I reversed normal thinking. I made the US version read from back to front, left to right, as when you guys drive, you never have anything to do with your right hand, seeing as you all drive automatics. I figured it's probably easier to turn the pages backwards with your right hand, right? This way, you can read it while you drive without having to worry about spilling your coffee or missing a call on your cell phone (both held in the left hand, along with the steering wheel). See, I've thought of everything.

Oh, and John, thanks for putting that Louis guy straight about Macs. I mean, does anyone still use a PC?

Title: Re: At the printers as we speak…
Post by: John Rayburn on August 25, 2008, 21:56:35 pm
No need to own a PC as all new Macs will,as well, run PC software in addition to all the non virus Mac stuff. Oh, also, steering is usually done via the elbow while drinking coffee and talking on the cell phone, and smoking the cigarettes, and fooling with the radio, and shaving, and or doing makeup.

Just to put matters as straight as I can make them, to the best of my knowledge, the books are printed and currently on a ship somewhere between China (where they were printed) and the UK/USA. The ETA is/was early-mid November and that's all I can say. Please realise that I actually don't have anything to do with printing, marketing, distribution etc of the books – I'm just the author... The copy I have seen was a review copy sent by airmail to the publisher. There is no chance of them being on sale at Slough swapmeet, although Gwynn at VW Collectibles may have my review copy to check out. I won't personally be there.

Hope that helps set the record straight!

Cheers! :)

That's just an advanced review copy sent out from the publishers - there were ten copies air-mailed over from the printers ahead of the main shipment and that is one of them...

Okay, here is a quickie... 144 pages, a lot more color than book #1, all new photos! More about the guys and clubs, with more personal photos of working on their cars, and club house pics. Haven't had a chance to read much, but all good. Some of these old photos will blow you away... many I've never seen before! Killer all the way.

Thanks Deano! Actually, here and now, I will admit to there being ONE publishing error in the book: for some reason, the printers chopped two lines off the end of one of the chapters! God bless them... Doesn't affect anything other than you'll wonder why it finished mid-sentence! Nothing to do with me – seems you can't get the staff these days!  ::)

But thanks again, Deano. Hearing that from you makes all the months of work worth it.  :)

Yes, that was a 'working cover' that had to be sent out to the book trade very early on to get it listed in catalogues. There is no book with that cover, so don't worry!

Or checking all the pictures first and then start reading. Or reading some captions and then start reading the book... just don't know it. :D

What? You colour blind all of a sudden? That car's RED! Hmmm, maybe you really are colour blind – in which case you can't tell the difference between green and red. If so, that accounts for you saying you want to paint your car green, when you really mean RED! Way to go, baby! You are da man! ;D

With only maybe 50 hp from my judson oval, i dont think i will be doing any street racing in the near future. Maybe i could race  one of them `hearing aid beige` old peoples three wheelers , i think i could have him off the lights!! It happens all the time in Wales, tis the street racing capital ! ;D

Any updates on when they will be available stateside in the U.S.?  I tried to get a copy through Ron at FAT but by the time I got a check in the mail (my fault, I snoozed, I lost) they're copies were all gone.

Yeah, I cancelled my motorbooks order because it was on backorder for so long... I was hopeful that the U.s. would have copies before the projected Amazon.com date of Jan. 1, but it looks like I'll just have to be patient.

Did anyone order the new book from motorbooks and receive it already? I ordered mine a month ago and it has not arrived yet? This sucks. I should have got it from vw collectables.

EDIT: I just called motorbooks and they said they will have the books mid to late January. Lame!

Last I heard it's still on backorder there.  Amazon.com gives a release date of Jan. 1 2009...

Once again, supernice book Keith !
I remember 13 years ago, when I took in hands the California look book one I just buy from you with Kobus, my english was realy poor at this time. More as today, yes it's true  ;D ! The Cal-look book was the firts english speaking book I read to the end and I really did it several times ! Cal-book in one hand and my english/french dictionary in the other hand  :P
And I knew it's true for a lot of non english speaking "Cal-look" anthousiasts they did the samr way ! I am sure of it, the first book change a lot of lifes. I hope, and I wish, the secopnd opus is going to make the same travel all over the world !

Thanks for all that great work and to share your passion whith every one of Us !
I can't wait for my personal dedication... at VoWoShow perhaps ???

My impatience knows no bounds... I ordered the book through UK's Amazon.com, should be here by Jan. 13 or 19.  If the stateside amazon gets it sooner I will cancel my order and switch back, but I'm hungry for this book.  Lol.  ;D
