Title: In a quiet corner of Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK, another O/FF car takes shape
Post by: Jonny Grigg on August 27, 2008, 23:10:32 pm
In 2009, this will be O/FF 111.

It has taken 2 years to get this far.......

A little bit more each day......

Engine is 2442cc (flanged 88mm crank, CE heads, IDAs etc) with some nitrous- you get the idea.

Trans is a KCR T1 swing axle..... when it is shipped from Riverside, that is!

Some people may remember it from 2004/5 when it was a street car racing in the UK VWDRC. best time then was 12.18 @112 (1915cc + gas).

Some minor body work and a paint job to go....... I can't wait for next year.  :)

Looks cool.
Like the Big Wig wing and wheely bars. Did Big Wig do the chute mount too?

Rob.

Ric did the wing, chute mount, wheelie bars and the door and 1/4 panels for the interior. The rest of the ally panelling on the inside was done by Jim Smith. The car is currently at Wayne Allman's for some finishing work- including bracing the chute launcher to the chute anchor frame around the motor. The Stroud mechanical launcher is a bit of a beast so needs a bit of re-enforcement!

 :)

What door cards did you go for, pattern wise?
I haven't seen the strouds up close, they don't need a pilot chute do they? What do you reckon to it over a standard simpson type?

Have you got any ideas for colour scheme?

Rob.

That looks cool  :) Are those rear wings wider than stock?

Redwagon - Yes William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the house where he was born and grew up is still there and you can visit it  :)

Thats a cool looking car 8)
Are you going for a `race car` paint job or a straight colour?

Any chance of some pics of the `chute mounts when its done?
Cheers,
Kev

It was in Ultra, looking good Jonny ;D

P.s Don't let Mr Webb see those wheelie bars, he'll tell you there a waste of time/weight/money, what you need is a good strong valance ;D

Awesome work Johnny, looks fantastic! I've seen this car a few times in the building and it's very well thought out - nothing in there that doesn't need to be, and everything that does! An amazing amount of work has gone into it, and I hope people don't just see it as having bolted a wing on the back and shoved in a bigger motor - this is proper! ;)

Thanks for the comments guys- my enthusiasm is sky-high at the moment  :)

I have been to see the car this evening in the Intergalactic Custom Shop as Wayne is weaving his finishing magic into it.......

I'll post some further pictures next week when I have it back in my garage  :)

Colour-wise I always intended it to stay Texas Yellow, however it may get a tint of metalflake following this evening's conversation  ;) And then there is the obligatory VW race car sign-writing of course......

I'll take some further shots of the chute mounting work next week for Kev D. The actual frame below the spolier was made by Ric Campbell at Bigwig to a sketch I pdf'd him, however because the spring force is so big in the launcher this needed some further bracing which Wayne has now done and it looks  8). Jim smith made the anchor point cage out of 1" chromoly that fits around the motor, which is again a very well thought out and well made part of the car. The chute anchor cage mounts to the trans cradle and to the roll cage. This will also be a mounting point for the nitrous and fuel solenoids and the throttle cable.

The Stroud chute doesn't have a pilot chute as it has a real beast of a launcher system. It is a chute made specifically for the air-cooled VW, which I found out about after posting on the STF a while back.

Wayne also managed to get the Werksberg flush fit window in, which was a complete swine- I wouldn't recommend these really, although they are quite well made  :-\

can't wait to get it painted and start the build up- then there will be pictures-a-plenty.

I'll video running the cam in.........

 :)

I'll video running the cam in.........

And then we'll drive it straight to Shakey - slicks, spindle mounts, NOS, no cooling and all! :D :-*

Roll on 2009 - when good enough won't be... ;)

I knew you would love the sissy sticks out back  ;D. I think they'll be necessary, given how light the thing is........

Thanks very much for helping me out with the case machining- I'll bring it to shakey for the Hot Rod Drags on the 13th.

It was a stunning car when you originally built it, but with this make over its going to be amazing!  ;D

Keep up the good work! I wondered where you'd been!

Hehe! Is it wrong to gloat that my 1914cc with gas was slightly quicker than yours!  ;D

With the current rebuild i think thats soon about to change!   ::) ;D

How is the project going?Any pics?

Probably not worth taking any pictures for a few weeks as it is stripped down to a shell again in the final throes of finishing before paint......

However, one recent slight change of plan involved the acquistion of an MSE Pistol Grip V Gate shifter........ which is on its way from Moyers Station Enterprises to KCR in Riverside....... Box is being built this week, then hopefully shipped next week over to me. Another big milestone (and empty wallet) will be when the box and shifter arrive  :)

I might take a few pictures then  ;)

You won't have seen it around Stratford unless you go into my garage  ;)

If you recognise the road, the house number is 72- knock the door and I'll put the kettle on and you can have a closer look at it.

It is now due to go to Dave Haywood for the full-on paint job and sign writing in January, so I have got my work cut-out getting it ready in time!

Gearbox and MSE V-Gate should be shipped this week from KCR - I lost out heavily on the exchange... goddamn global economic meltdown.

Progress could slow down fairly soon as I it now appears I have got to work in Kent for a year- which has pleased the wife no end  ::). Next step is to find a place to stay during the week, then set my engine stand up in the living room and start building that 2442 that is going to power this crate. In the new year I'll be limited to weekends only to get it all together, but will hopefully be ready for the first O/FF meeting of 2009, once it is back from paint.......

not much of an update, but these two bits are on their way from California.......finally.

Pictures taken at Kevin Richards' workshop last week.

The trans is a single side cover T1 converted to swing axle, with the biggest bastard gussets I have ever seen.......

I can't remember the full spec, but I think it is 3.88 on a spool, pro-rings, chromoly main shaft yadda yadda yadda..... should take the planned HP given how light the car is. Kevin's reputation speaks for itself, so I hope it will hold together for a good few passes  ;)

All-in-all £2.5k well spent (including the funky MSE shifter....)

Should be arriving next week so I hope to have some good playtime in the garage next week. I doesn't help that I am working 200 miles away from home at the moment  ::)

I'll update as I go  :)

Thought it was time to update my thread a little.

Whilst it doesn't look like much, i have been working quite hard on the car over the past few weeks.....:

MSE shifter is now in and 4 forward gears can be selected  ;)

In this picture you can also see the substantial bracing around the rear end in the torsion tube and wheelie bar area:

Had a bit of a blow with the KCR trans as it got damaged in transit so needs to be re-cased- not the end of the world, but annoying nonetheless......

You can see I have had to chop a fair bit out of the tunnel to clearence the shift rods, but the car is substantially caged so shouldn't compromise integrity too much. Wayne Allman came and had a look and we have agreed to brace it a bit more around the B hoop and the torsion housing to make me sleep easier  ::) :)

I have had a right game recently taking out all of the tubes inside the tunnel, including the old hand/E brake cable conduits exiting the frame horns at the back end- real nightmare and I recommend to anyone to never start down this road! It has worked out OK though now.....

Current work is making good the tunnel to put some strength back into it, and finishing off the shifter mount with some fancy drilling and gussets.... I spent today fitting a pedestal drill in my garage and am now about to venture back out there with my skiing thermals on.... it is -4c here  :(

Hopefully next weekend I can get the hydraulic stage brake mounted, along with the switch panel....... then it is the throttle cable, chute cable and a million other small jobs. I'll get there eventually.

I'll try and update again when I have something more substantive to show  ;)

Looks great. Are you going for an upright staging brake or an angled one like a handbrake?

Title: Re: In a quiet corner of Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK, another O/FF car takes shape
Post by: Jonny Grigg on January 03, 2009, 23:59:20 pm
The trans took a whack on the radius where the starter mounts on so there is now a chunk missing- you can probably just make it out on the last picture- from about 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock, if that makes sense. Both Kevin and I were both gutted, but it is just one of those things I guess...... Got a claim in with Bax Global now, so we'll see where that goes.

The staging brake is a 'horizontal' one, like a handbrake- the missus bought it for me for Christmas. I intend to make a locating plate for it and weld it to the LH side of the tunnel, just behind the shifter, so the handle starts slightly behind and to one side of the reverse lever. I'll also locate the master cut-off switch and some of the more minor switches (nitrous arm, purge, fuel pumps, lights and cooling fans) in the same plate. I've got it in my head, but probably not explaining too well- I'll do some pictures when I have done it.

Got further on with the back of the tunnel tonight, and also put a conduit in for the throttle cable. The pedal is now a JAMAR item with the cable located directly to it, but being a RHD car, it will look a bit Heath Robinson as the cable has to go diagonally across the RH floorpan before entering the tunnel. I'll get it to work. The throttle cable is now a Venhill teflon item- £46!!!!!

Nice to hear from you Richie. When are you back in the UK?

You explained it perfectly well. I look forward to the pics.

I've got very used to having a vertical staging brake so that my hand falls directly to the gear stick when I let it go. I've got a vertical one I'm jsut debating if it's the right way to go or not.

Randomly I was going through some old pictures having a beer with a fellow Rennwagen member last night and found some with your bug when it was in the VWDRC (and a few other Outlaw's too, got a great picture of Pete Cogbox's Fiat completely airborne!).

I have lots of photos taken recently, but none that'll really do it justice just at the moment.... i'll have a look through the digital camera and see what I have got.  ;)

The car has been at Dave Haywood's place for the past 6 weeks or so now. There has been alot of subtle body mods done, most of which i doubt anyone will notice, however it is getting there now. Dave and Matt (Attwood) are both excellent at this bodywork lark but it all takes time, so it'll be done when it is done I guess!

I have also picked up my case from Pete's place yesterday, so I'll get on with trial fitting the crank when i prise myself away from this computer!

I'll get some photos up later on  :)

Ok guys, I thought it was time I updated my thread a bit more.....

So, in May, the car went to Dave Haywood's place (http://www.haywood-classic-custom.co.uk) to finish the body, chassis, prep and paint......

The day it left my place it was looking like this:

No spoiler or doors, but looking reasonable as a rolling shell

Momo quick release wheel as I can't get out otherwise!

Then I took it to Dave's place:

There has been so much work done by Dave and Matt it would be impossible to describe it all here..... suffice to say the body is beautifully straight, the doors and bonnet fit brilliantly, as does the rear bodywork....

the car is now in primer, being prepped for paint:

check out the doors- these still weigh in at around 7kg each, but have been fully welded up around the window area.... as has the door handle, so we'll open the door via a small slot in the window to reach the lever at the top.

and finally, some prized prat sat on a cardboard box making engine noises..... even at the age of 33 I don't think I have grown up yet ;-)

Since we have taken these pictures, the body has been flatted again ready for another coat of primer, the spoiler has been finished and a multitude of other areas have been worked on...... When it is finished, I'd invite anyone to have a good look around my car as the standard of finishing work by Dave is second to none..... if you are the Midlands/Warwickshire area, pop by his place and have a look at his work.... and Dave does a mean cup of tea too  :)

Be prepared for a multi-coloured OFF car in 2010.

It has been some time since I updated my thread so I thought I would post up a few little shots

the car progress has been slower than I expected when I first started this thread, but we are getting there now! Working 200 miles away from the car and having some personal 'obstacles' to overcome in the past year have not helped- but the enthusiasm and drive to build my 'No Compromise' race car still burns bright. I am proud of what I have done so far and the realisation of a dream is on the horizon ;-)

If you are friends with me on Facebook or you have been to Dave Haywood's workshop you may have seen a bit more of the ca, but if not here are a few sneaky shots.... It should be done for the start of the race season next year as I am about to move jobs and house again  ;)

The car comes home this week and the build will begin, so I hope to keep you all updated a little more frequently. Oh, and the motor is getting there too.... I'll take some shots of that this week.

I thought I would give a quick update of progress since picking the car up two weeks ago. Thanks to good friends Dave and JamieL, we have so far made the progress shown in the photos below. The big stuff is in now, next is the hydraulics and electrics... it is coming on well!

working in a single car garage is hard at times, but thankfully the weather has been good recently......

Trans and MSE shifter are in! Also the steering column, instruments, pedals and rear suspension.

Trans originally started out as a KCR built 'box with spool, pro-rings and other nice bits but unfortunately got broken in shipping. Pete E re-cased it with a gusseted Rhino casting however the gusset proved to be a bit too close to the wheelie bar bracket. With the help of the grinder and a hand file, 2 hours later it was in...... It is also nice to see the Neal clutch slave and hi-torque starter. With a 14.1:1 compression motor, I'll need it.

Neal and Jamar. Nice.

Autometers and removable Momo suede rimmed wheel. The LM1 also fits against the dash on the speaker vent.

mmmmmmm.

The first interior panels are in. Powder coated in antique grey vein by NSP Coatings in Kent.

Fitting the shift rods was a pig. We polished the 6061 rods with Silvo, then realised that when i mocked it up before paint I previously fitted the rose joints to the nose cone before putting the trans in. Unfortunately when we built it for real I forgot to do this and as the trans was such a swine to get in, we didn't want to take it out again. Out came the cordless drill and hand file on a freshly painted chassis to clearence the bolt. Jamie did this one as I didn't have the guts! All worked out well though and with a small touch up you'd never know.....

1 gallon Jaz fuel cell, 4" narrowed beam, CB dropped spindles and everything powder coated gloss black. Also the bracing for the front of the body is in...... Just got to make the track rods and buy the front dampers now.

fuel pumps for the 62s and the N2O are yet to go in up front....

Need to get some more stickers.....

Thats it for a couple of weeks, but I'll update again when we have got the rear brakes, shocks and limit straps finished and get on with the hydraulics  :)

Cheers,

Jonny.

Time for a quick update. I am moving house from Stratford Upon Avon to the Cotswolds, so I have put the car into storage at Mum and Dad's place in Sutton Coldfield for a couple of months whilst we get things sorted. The car is about 80% complete now, with really just the wiring, nitrous system and windows to go. The motor is nearly built and I will post some pictures of this soon  ;)

I hope you like the car.

Next plan is to finish the motor and fit it over the Christmas break, then hopefully move the car back to dave Haywood's workshop for some final finishing.... Then I can get the wiring done and let the fun begin.

I am still waiting to hear whether I am eligible for the Volksworld show though......

I'll update again soon.

J.  :)

Thanks Neil! Glad you like it..... I have actually changed the car since the photoshoot- running JayCee/Strange front brakes, a new steering system and polished Centerline Revolutions up front. I might post some more pictures.......

Hoping to make it to Drag Day but real life keeps getting in the way. It'll be at EBI for sure.

See you soon

I will let Jonny fill in all the details but all seemed good to me, car was nice and straight, he did some easy passes to get used to it and racing again. Had some small teething problems that are easy to fix, and car went back on the trailer ready to go again next weekend at EBI I believe :)

cheers Richie

As Richie says- the shakedown went well at Santa Pod yesterday. We've had a few problems to overcome to get to this point, but the ran well on the rollers on Thursday so we headed to Pod with a bit of confidence.

The car runs strong and straight, although we may have the gearing wrong in 4th, but we'll wait and see. First run coasted through at about 85mph in 13.3 seconds, shut down just after the 8th. Second run still with a lazy launch got us a 1.60 sixty foot, 7.6 to the 8th at 90, then went flat in 4th just past the 8th as the gearing feels wrong as it dropped the motor right off cam.... Coasted through with the motor off in 12.76 at 80 mph... Not too shabby for a new car that I had driven for the first time 30 minutes prior, and the first time up the strip in nearly 8 years!

With some advice and confidence from Richie we lowered the wheelie bars and upped the launch limiter to give it a bit more of a hit off the line. A good burnout at 7500, we then got pushed back as the oil fitting from the filter discharge came loose! Cold have been pretty serious, so was very thankful the startling crew spotted it before we staged.... By the time we got back to our pit space  the track was closed for the day.

So, we,ve got some oil to clean off the motor and some fittings to tighten, but it all seems alright at the moment......

All in all a good day.
