I like to drive around the older homes here in Orange on my lunch hour. I just look in the yards! I have hit up quite a few ol' folks on early bugs in there back yards. So far......none will part. I even followed a guy home. I think that was a little much. He was pretty freaked out. Oh well. When you see a gem, you gotta have it......right?  All the cars I do see with for sale signs, they are all junk, and they want a ton of $ for them. See ya around Danny. Casey.

10 years ago there were VW's everywhere around here (Prescott, AZ), just sitting in yards. Now, they are all gone. With the recent increase in gas prices, many people are pulling them out of garages and barns, and turning them back into daily drivers, which is neat. There are still lots of rust free cars located up north, like Laramie, Wyoming where I found my GTV for example. The VW scene up there is almost non-existent, and most people up there don't have a clue what they have.

I've found several cars from just driving around as well. I try to take different routes whenever I can just so I can find more cars. I've also found that driving a VW brings more VW's out of the woodwork. I've been offered quite a few cars simply because people know me as a "VW Guy".

I haven't been up in that area, but I've heard that they're up there. I think Wyoming, North & South Dakota, Nebraska, ect. are the places to look.

sheep and I used to go on voyages to find weird stuff out in the middle of nowhere. One day southwest of Fresno we found this parking lot spilling over with pre-65 square windows, ovals, etc. I think it was Johnson or Jensen motors off of Hwy 41 near Hanford or Lemoore. This was about 20 yr ago though. There was also this crazy old guy up north of Lakeport, CA, on your way to Mendocino natl forest lands, like Pilsbury Lake area .... guy reminded me of Anton La Vey, had a yard of some pretty cool old stuff, lots of -67 Type 2, lots of 5-lug T3's, Notchbacks, NOS stuff like steering wheels, oval gas tanks, bus glass... some sheetmetal. I bought a busload of stuff one day from the guy. Also came home with a tick embedded in me.
How about the guy on Bethel Island, in the Delta? Anybody remember him? A few friends and I visited him a few times. Oh and on SR49, coming into Angel's Camp there was a big yard of just bus stuff....  crewcabs as far as the eye could see.... I forgot the name of the place. The guy that ran it, every time I went there could barely stand up he was always so drunk.

Bethel Island was probaly Ben Mezzetti,  wow lots of vw's. Clearlake might have been Tom Coddington?..........Jim

Right on both accounts! Coddington was an "interesting" guy to deal with. Mezzetti was never there so I always talked to the hired help, who knew, or claimed to know nothing.
I remember laying in wet grass under a '65 rustbuasket bus pulling the beam out, while it rained at Coddington's.
