Doors, a guy called Dale Edwards from DRE has the mould for bug doors, they are the ones Jim Smith runs (the mould was taken from Jim's doors!) DRE make some of the best glass parts for the V8 boys and these bug doors are really good! I think they are £150 each. Title: Re: Fiberglass fenders doors and lids? Got to agree with Steve DRE is probably the best person in the UK if you want anything made up. He will also do it in Carbon if you wish. I have to say that Remmele is really top quality too, they can make anything! Not cheap but its mainly carbon fibre and is really well made! I was blown away when I visited them last year, especially the fact that its Eddie Remmeles Wife who makes all the carbon fibre parts lol Rob. Title: Re: Fiberglass fenders doors and lids? Don't forget that Jim's doors are big-window ones, so could be used for '65 up, although I don't know what handle recess and latch mechanism they're supposed to take. Post by: Jonny Grigg on September 04, 2008, 19:21:04 pm I bought some CSP rear wings and they are very good quality and I needed something about 40mm wider. I've got to admit I am sceptical about the weight saving on GRP parts. I have some fibreglass doors and I weighed them, complete with hinges- came in at 9.3kg. Then i got a repro steel door from VWHeritage and weighed that- and guess what..... it weighed 9.3kg with the hinges!
I have opted to go with repro steel doors on my race car as they are a good fit and are very easy to finish in comparison to the GRP ones I have got- plus I wasn't sure how I was going to rivet the flush fit windows to GRP! I reckon there is potentil to get another 2kg or so out of each steel door, so all up I reckon it will weigh about 10kg with the window, inner aluminium skin and latch mechanism. The stock door with the 1/4 light, glass window, door card and winder mech weighed in at 19.6kg! A 20kg saving on both doors is not bad for a day's work :). I also have a GRP bonnet from the now defunkt Wizard Roadsters. This is actually a very good quality moulding, but I reckon it weighs about the same, if not more than the equivalent steel one! The GRP thickness is huge to give it strength. I have now single skinned the bonnet and chased out the inside to thin it down- yeah it is flimsy as hell, but now it only weighs 6.5kg. I know this sounds anal, but it was a right pig to get on the car as it is held on with 'R' clips- no hinges. Now, with the reduced weight, it is just easier to man-handle. However, all this said, I would go with what the guys have said here. I have Day Moulding fronts (and yes, they are heavy!), and have looked closely at Jim's ones made by DRE, and they are excellent. I hope this helps. Title: Re: Fiberglass fenders doors and lids? Post by: andy M. on September 04, 2008, 21:11:52 pm I bought a set of day mouldings wings for my '66 bug, i specified that i wanted them as light as possible and thats exactly what mr mouldings provided, they weigh fuck all, fit perfectly and look stock and are very reasonable on the pocket too. And he's got the cleanest workshop on earth.
