Title: well we might as well drag Brinton's car into this mess too.....
Post by: Jim Ratto on September 10, 2008, 20:56:37 pm
ok Rayburn....  since Greg doesn't seem to surface here.... either go get him or tell us about Greg growing up a VW guy. Let's see pictures of his cars. How about the history of the black '67? I remember seeing it a long long time ago with the 1914/IDAs/FK7 cam... maybe it was 1990? He was just a kid, like Sheep and me. In fact, when we had the disaster-party at my house last fall, Sheep ran into Greg for the first time since 1990 or whenever, and said "Jim, that's the same guy?" I think we all had a good laugh, especially after Sheep ripping on Sarge a few good ones.
Anyway... back on track.... let's talk about Greg's cars...  the black car, the Super Street, the hot 914...

Greg didn't actually build the black car right? Someone else owned it before him?

I've got a pic or two of the SS car before it was painted. Greg and I put that car together using all kinds of wierd parts, but it hauled ass. We ran quick 16 before the SS class was invented. I drove it with a couple of different 48 IDA motors in it, Jeff Denham drove it with a turbo motor in it then Greg transformed it into the SS car you all remember. Gary Grauman originally built the '67 and was a DKK meber along with me, Bill, Rick, DKK fred and others. I'll have to recant a couple of drag strip stories and post in the "scariest drag strip stories" thread. Greg has a couple of pics of us putting the BIG motor in the 914. (priceless 80's pics). I'll see if I can get ahold of his photo album.

What happened to the SS car? Wasn't it for sale a few years back? As I am sure someone in the UK was thinking about buying it, but they had a car built in the end.

Nice thread, I was thinking to start it couple of days ago as I wanted photos to see how his Fuchs were detailed ;) Remembered that they looked better than the original detailing.

Greg's car is one of my overall favorites.  I was glad I got to check it out @ Bug-In 32.

Altho I like it much better with the leather Empi wheel over the white VDM wheel.  Ugh.   ;)

Hey Mike, next time your at Bug-In 32, stop by for a beer ::) ;D  My shot the same day.  The other shot is from the DKP Reunion in 1990..., that's Mark Thurber and Darrell Vittone on the left.

Agreed... great car and I prefer the black leather wheel and horn button/pad over the other wheel. I'd love to find one of those for my '67.

Yep, they thought about this one, and Small Wonder too, then decided to get a SS-type pan car built, which became a full chassis turbo car! :D

So, what did happen to Greg Brinton's SS car? Did it sell?

Hey Mike, next time your at Bug-In 32, stop by for a beer ::) ;D

Someone say beer?...Bug-In 32 seems like it was "pre-lounge" and I didn't really know many people then.   ::)  Funny story, at least to me...we were at the Bug-In, checkin' out the scene, cars, swap, etc., and I suddely stopped and thought "something's missing, where's the DKP cars?"  Sure enough, in the drag pits!  Boy, was I relieved!

Yeah, me too.  Most of the other Empi stuff I can take or leave, but I loooove those big-button wheels.

Off-topic, but what does Mark Thurber do today? (From the FAT founders, everyone knows Ron and wasn't Aaronson's 911 featured in 911 Porsche&World? So at least 2/3 of them are into VWs&Porsches still.)

Mark is service manager here at Commonwealth VW/Audi.  We've worked together for the last 15 years.  He drives a black '01 Audi S4 with all the go-fast shit you can put on it.  Aronson has never had a 911 that I can recall..., your probably thinking of Jim Holmes and his sano '66 that were in Porsche World.

So I was thinking about this tonight, and with the increase in DEEKs around here since then, does anyone have any more stories/insight/hearsay from back in the Grauman days?

Still my favorite car by far, I think.

Greg told me the race car went to Japan many years ago.  Greg made this black car what it is, (5 speed, motor, etc etc etc etc etc etc..........) and has kept it true to it's roots.  It is a true California classic with original paint and lots of goodies added by Greg to make it a bitchin survivor car.
Have him tell yah about his days traveling the US beating V8's every day and setting NHRA records in that and Roger Crawfords car.

The guy is a witch.

P.S. he looks pretty good in that bikini on the first page.

the photo in KS's performance handbook is the best shot of this car IMHO. that one really portrays the layers and layers of deep paint and a bad-ass stance  ;D
just ace! don't have it on my PC though, otherwise i'd post it...

It will take an act of congress to get Greg on here............he can barely use his phone.  The 67 is pretty close to its roots except it doesn't have a hair dryer on it.  We had a great time racing the SS car before it got all pretty, it started out with an 1835 w/ 48's, 1350 LBS with me in it and ran deep into the 12's with the little motor. The motors got bigger and the fun got smaller when we took it off the street.

Greg's car is my nr.1 cal-looker of all time !
First Volksworld that I bought was from summer '97 with a review of a black '67 sedan, and that black paint is very nice and it was a reason to paint my bug black !
I still remember - 217hp engine amd interior done some 25 (now it would be 35) years ago...cool !

As I live in Croatia, that was my first introduction to California Look, and from then, I'm a regular Volksworld and Ultra VW reader and subscriber... 8)

Good times, I remember when Greg drove his black to my house on July 4th and a very large sky rocket hit the front fender and put a big chip in the paint the size of a golf ball! Greg one time picked up a cracked crank at Proformance and we were dropping it and he grabs the crack smacks into the curb and it breaks in Half! Any play walleyball any more? I think I have video of Jeff Denham wheelie at Az.
