Title: remember these "hot rod" parts from years gone by?
Post by: Jim Ratto on September 11, 2008, 20:45:47 pm
Bolt on Select a Drop? I never actually saw one of these... but wasn't there some big 3/4" sway bar involved and the torsions got "clamped" down into a lowered position somehow? There was a stupid blue/bright pink/day-glo green '69 at high school that I seem to remember having one.

RX exhaust system? If there was ever a header to get you a ticket....

The clear plastic (tinted in your choice of red, blue, smoke, or clear) 009 distributor caps? And their sideways "Porsche Style" brother?

The matching clear plastic generator backing plate (between generator and fan)?

The chrome, louvered, fan belt guard? Supposed to save the lives of those that wear a tie when working on their motors I guess.

The really cool red trans mounts that looked like they were made of Red Vines licorice? Not the usual urethanes... these were WORSE. Kind of translucent....

What else?

I have both of them somewhere in my stuff, in blue, I even have the one you put in front of the generator pulley ! I bought it a few years ago, but I never mounted it  :D. I don't even know if you can still get it in a shop now.

These have been around since the 50's - I think we're talking more about "Modern Crap" ;) :)

I snapped one of those red urethane nosecone mounts in half the first day I had it in my car. I also had one of those clear distributor caps, but it cracked right away and made my car miss. I swapped it for the stock one in my dad's bus and it ran fine in the bus for years!

HUH? Wow, I guess that I must've missed all of the other stuff that you listed, Jim. I was in the VW industry and heavily in the scene, and I don't remember those. I remember the fan belt guard and kinda-sorta remember the trans mounts... but not really.

Glad that I stayed away from being exposed to it all. HAHA!!

What about "wink mirrors"?

Blech! Okay, I stand corrected... I sadly DO remember those feckless things. God, what a waste of plastic and glass. So many Cal Look and other cars had those things, back then.

You are forgetting the long polished cylinder that went over the distributor so it looked kind of like a Mag.

Whoa... back the truck up (beep... beep... beep)

How come no one's Cal Looked one of THESE? HELLO???
I remember seeing these on the So Cal roads during the '70s/'80s. C'mon... envision a Wink mirror, alloys, and a fire-breathing 2.3 liter VW engine that'll wheelstand the rig.

GOOD TIMES!

Mark, you're a sick, sick man, and in need of professional help! I mean, a Wink mirror?! ;)

I have to confess to buying some dayglo pink running boards...  :o But only so I could shorten them to clear the flip front and removeable wings on my race car! They were immediately painted satin black, and only cost £5 brand new because our local place hadn't sold any for years! :D

And as for fuel-injection! Pah!  ::)

Wait... I'M sick? Never had dayglow running boards. Hopefully, you're not too traumatized from that experience. I have a bigger respect for you now. It must be hard to admit to dayglow anything. HAHA!!

hey Jim......you're right that there was a reallly heavy duty anti-roll bar and a very thick gauge T bar kinda thing which bolted on under the framehead...as i recall the cross/top part of the T had two holes in it that corresponded to the two holes in the framehead just either side of the tunnel and bolted thru'.....the vertical line of the T came forward and linked somehow? to the anti-roll bar with a big nut/bolt arrangement......by tightening the nut it clamped up the bar thus pulling up the lower torsion bars.

or something like that?

it was 21 years ago and i was a dumb kid....as opposed to the dumb 38 year old i now am.

HAHAHA!!! I totally forgot about those, Danny... good call! I remember seeing that crap, everywhere. The decklids, hoods, running boards, etc. I never understood why someone would want to intentionally harm a perfectly innocent Volkswagen body. Mini-trucks... no big loss, but a VW? NO!

Cheese grater is a very funny analogy.

I used to see a guy running around So. Cal. years ago in a blue '64 with a louvered W decklid...oddly enough, I kinda liked it. Seems like his name was... Rohn Jayburn or something like that... ::)

Thanks for the laughs, Dave.

One night at scooters now nicks we were hanging out maybe even drinking in the parking lot and this turqoise bug with about a million louvers on any place they could punch one. backs in and parks. So I walk up { when I was a smart azz } and tell the guy that his car was the largest cheese grader that I had ever seen. Lucky again I did not get my azz kicked. Just thought I'd share that now were talking louvers

Fred,
I'm thinking that Jayburn guy really needed the louverd decklid to give that mighty type IV some breathing room... or some such thing.
Oh well, at least it was an original W lid. ;)
