Title: I firmly believe...
Post by: louisb on September 25, 2008, 17:33:18 pm
..that you should never buy tools from a place that sells feminine hygiene products. Real hardware stores sell hardware and nothing else.

But I will say it is nice to go to a real hardware store and be able to ask a clerk a question and not have them look at you like you have flowers sprouting out of your ears.

Growing up I lived in an even smaller southern town than the one I live in now. The only place you could buy stuff like tools or nails or what ever was this ancient hardware store that was run by an even more ancient old man. There were no fancy displays and the place probably had not been painted since the revolution. The floor was wood and well worn. You could buy feed and worms and hammers there, but not much else. Oh yeah and dynamite, I was always amazed they sold dynamite. There was a bunch of old guys that hung out there who always had advice, good and bad, on how to fix your latest project. And the store always had just what you needed and nothing else. It was a guy's hardware store that sold guy stuff. And the people who worked there actually knew every thing in the store. And if they didn't have it, they knew where you could get it.

Now days you have to go to some damn Meglomart that carries everything that you don't need and nothing you do. You can buy frozen chicken nuggets, pantie hose and the latest herbal remedies all in the same store. But if your looking for a 3/16 drill bit forget it.  Mind you it takes two hours to find anything and and heaven forbid you have a question and have to find an "associate". Their usual answer being that it should be on isle 347 which is all the way across the store from them. Because honestly, they have no clue and all they want to do is get away from you so they can go on break. Most of them are so damn stupid the can't grab their own ass with both hands. Even if you gave them illustrated instructions.

OSH is still good. We had a few of those nearby in Northern Calif.
In Southern Calif they seem to be sparse.... the closest one to me is 30-40 min away, in La Crescenta (only place I can find NPT plugs for oil pumps around here  :-\)
Do It Center is cool though, and they are everywhere around here...

I'm a modern man.
But apparently they're not a proper present "

" Happy birthday, mum ! "

Orchard Supply Hardware started in Santa Clara before it was known as Silicon Valley. That's why they had a lot of them in Nor Cal.
