Title: Lounge License Plate Frames
Post by: louisb on September 29, 2008, 15:32:02 pm
I noticed the CLF has license plate frames. Never one to shy away from stealing a good idea, how about one for the Lounge. I am sure we can come up with a cooler one anyway.  ;D

Why not? We already have epic shirts. A chrome license plate frame would be COOL! A plastic one would be most likely cheaper and appreciated, as well. But chrome and possible classic VW dealer styling would be a nice fit on our beloved Cal Look cars, yes?

Place your votes.

What would it say? Like the shirts, it should not be too obvious. And no location since the Lounge is world wide.

that would be cool indeed -- the only problem i see is the plate size -- european plates are all different sizes -- glups

Do two sizes, same design. Course it would only be worth it if there was enough interest for both sizes.

You can do US size and Belgium size, there's a lot that will use it. European std rear plate on a beetle is too big, it's ugly with a frame on it. A lot of guys (and me) use US size for the rear.

Yes.
I'm in.

Go US Size, anyone overhere can order plates that size from various US plate-makers or local ones if they put some effort to it.

I guess the issue is the width, most Euro plates look pretty closely matched in height. So if we can find a compromise in the height, one option might be that the frames would have a notch in the upright bars to clear a wider plate? IMHO, that would make the plate look bit lighter too.. But the older Finnish black plates, 3 letter + 2 numbers, fit into US frames if the plate is narrowed around 1 cm at each end so I could live with US sized frames.

Does any of you US guys have leads about companies that would do the frames / have molds if they're casted?

I also remember DAS guys having their own set of wider Economotors frames to fit the Belgian plate, what material were those made of? Yves, Roland do you remember?

You can check the Platemeister at www.LICENSEPLATES.TV.com.(or google youre way in). Write them exactly what you need (US Size) and they make it. All colours are in stock. Just check my "Dutch" plates. The blue/white ones have a white line surroundingstripe and the yellow/black ones a black stripe.
I bet they can make that in white/red as well.

Anyway, sounds like there is some interest, along with a few problems to be made. Now we just need to get the okay from the Lounge Head Honchos and someone to spearhead the project. (Hey, I am just an idea man. ;D ) Or maybe a vendor could take it on as a small quantity community building affair. (And get their name on the plate in a discrete fashion?)

Sorry... I know this is intended to be a license plate frame thread, but since we're in Off Topic; I gotta see this '66 again. One of my two favorite model years.
Seriously COOL car!

This style of frame would be perfect. Looks just like the old VW frames from the late '70s and early '80s.
Next, would be which text to choose. Would we want it to say The Lounge on one part and the website address on the other? Or, leave the address off and choose something else? Either way would be cool.

Not to be a party pooper, but I would like Jon and myself to be included in the plans/decisions if this is actually carried out to beeing an official plate for The Lounge :-D

1> top : cal-look.no
     down : The Cal-look Lounge

2> top : cal-look.no
     down : It's a cal-look thing...

3> top : cal-look.no
     down : ...you wouldn't understand

4> It's a cal-look thing...
     ...you wouldn't understand

5> The Cal-look Lounge
     ...you wouldn't understand

Something like that could be nice, it would be cool to have the lounge written on it, so maybe instead of cal-look.no it could be cal-look.no/lounge. But for a perfect 70/80 look maybe it would be better to not write a website adress. #5 is cool.

1> top : cal-look.no

That works for me. I'm sure there will have to be a vote, no doubt. After all, the webmasters have the final say so, like any other site.

Not to be a party pooper, but I would like Jon and myself to be included in the plans/decisions if this is actually carried out to beeing an official plate for The Lounge :-D

But of COURSE. We wouldn't have it any other way, Trond & Jon. Speaking of which... what do you both think? The only other aspect I'll add is I think it would be really cool to use the royal blue background with white letters. Same way that Volkswagen had their U.S. dealer frames. Just a suggestion.

I think it should just say "The Cal-Look Lounge" only. Whos remembers the old frame frames that said "Der Kafer" on them? They had a cool style of writing on them. Kind of an old english look. They should be nice chrome also and not the cheap stuff on most frames. Oh yeah, and leave the word "Volkswagen" off completely. Or else VWOA will confiscate them all.

First Question... Why is this in Off Topic??? Seems like quite the contrary. Any who, I like the idea of plate frames, but I'm not too fond of the Monkey see Monkey do scenario. It is possible for me to make plate frames, unfortunately the cost would be higher than our step sister site. I've been throwing the idea around about a "The Lounge" hood badge, I think this would be the coolest thing since DKP. Hey Sarge, think you could lead us to the company that makes the DKP badge's?
