I gotta wonder how many other treasures are hidden there at Berg's. Walking through their shop and warehouse is like walking through a museum!

Post by: bugnut68 on October 03, 2008, 21:49:49 pm
I can't imagine having the disposable income to be able to afford to spend the equivalent of a brand new small economy car (brand dependent, of course) on a set of wheels... hell, I can't even afford the BRM knock offs, let alone a set of chromies right now.  Lol.  ;D Poverty sucks.
Even if I did have the coin for rims, I don't know if I'd buy aging magnesium rims to actually drive on... I remember reading Andy Spilkoman's article about an exploding BRM that injured him a few years back.

Oh, that's right... well, either way, I'd be reluctant to put many miles on a well-aged set of magnesium rims.  I once flipped a van (non VW) that blew a tire, so I'm a little gun shy on wheel/tire related accidents ;D

Not bad investment ( for the seller ) Considering the wheel where priced originally $49.50 each..

BTW: Shipping charges should be very cheap , they only weight in @ 8 lbs. each. :D

I think if they sell for less than 15k somebody is getting a deal. With the replicas on the scene people have forgotten how rare BRM's & wide 5 Americans are. In the 80's & early 90's seeing a set outside of the Berg's was like seeing a unicorn. Now people are jaded & think they are everywhere.   If I had the means I would buy them in a heartbeat...

Getting back to my earlier concern about durability, how well does magnesium hold up through the decades?  10 plus grand for a set of wheels that would just sit around to look at wouldn't seem worth it to me, if they weren't useable (that is, useable in a safe manner).

Art G uses his, & I use mine, I would'nt do any off roading and I am pretty careful about where I point my car. They have held up pretty good for the nearly 20yrs I have owned my particular set. You just have to be careful. I keep aluminum wheels on the car most of the time now, because I am just tired of polishing them.  Bill

I think the answer was right underneath your very own nose... Myself and a few other members drive/race their car with real magnesium wheels from time to time. If you had any type of concerns or questions,  It would when wheels were over loaded of usage ( off roading like Bill said ) and if they where exposed around water/humidity for long periods of time. not the ones sitting in a ( NOS ) dry free environment.

Being that the wheels are 90% old tech magnesium vs. today's new tech magnesium. I would still have to say, there is no doubt in my mind they are strong, and rigidity...( See: Berg race car 40+ years of racing ). ;)

BTW: most horrid stories you hear say, are surrounding the EMPI 2pc wheels. If you stare at them long enough they will crack.. :D

the wheels were first seen by the public at the end of February 66 and would soon become a big seller in the USA where the benefit of light weight was not lost on the drag race fraternity.

Unless your buying wheels for your F-1 car 13k for a set of wheels - You need your head checked - plus they are ugly.

If someone else has budget for 13K$ wheels, I am happy for him/her, nothing away from me even I cannot afford them..

I remember my folks buying three new VW's back in the 60's.  I can just imagine my dad telling the salesman to change the factory steelies and caps for a set of those odd looking, grey wheels in the EMPI catalog....NOT!!

For the record. My offer was too low so its not me.  :(

However, whoever gets them WELL DONE and so what about the price.... anyone on here with a negative opinion can F&^% off as far as im concerned the beauty is in the eye of the beholder....  We all collect stuff some people pay hundres of $ for magazines or an autograph of a golfer or football star and that is no use for anyone, some people pay millions for a painting ! there choice not mine, however its ot my opinion nor should it be yours if its too much or stupid if the buyer and seller agree and are happy that should be enought.

So on the plus side for all us that own BRM's maybe there vaule has gone up like everything else in the world, Gas, Interest Rates, costs and maybe this is an investment not a waste of money as suggested.

If you purchased a F1 Maclaran a few years agon today its worth almost double the amount, so maybe those who didt win or didnt bid  the are ones that are wrong.

One other point 3 months ago someone paid 317,000.00 euros for a Schimwagon 6 months ago you could get one for around 80,000 euros !!! and dont even get me started on Prosche RS's but they have proven to be some really spund investments for the collectors/investors.

So whoever got them, well done again.

P.s not sure i like the fact the the highest bid price had been posted on thesamba as this is asking for someone else to jump in on the poor guy, they asked for offers and should accept the highest offer, not start a biding war.

Everything is relative, if you have the spondoolies available, and you liked the wheel why would you NOT buy them?

I think they're cool as, and if I had a spare £xxx knocking about I'd be all over them - and I'd be driving on them. I don't though, so I have repop's!

Title: Re: This just in........

Oh, and I don't get the investment angle of stuff like this, any of it - leave that to art dealers ;) and classic sportscar brokers - yeah, I know its a fact of life, but if you like something and can afford it, buy it and enjoy it for what it is.

Thats not a dig at ANYONE here - a guy may have quite easily gone and bought a garage full of investment iron rather than, for instance, a garage full of old VW's - I'm not saying that the cars we are all interested in are NOT worthy of ivestment, just they're not your typical investment material, which to me is a good thing. 'Investments' get put in a conditioned environment and only see the light of day long enough to be re-valued. That SUCKS.

I guess they're only worth it if someone pays the money for them, but I'm just not that much of a purist in the Cal-Look realm.  Even if I had the dough there's no way I'd dole out 10 plus grand for a set of rims.  I guess there's different levels of dedication out there.

I'd like to also clarify that my previous comments weren't intended as negative tripe or anything of that nature, but, as a not so hardcore (and financially strapped lol ;D) enthusiast, I could build a damn nice car for $13 grand.  Not to take anything away from the guy who has the means to buy them; if he/she wants them and can afford them, by all means, more power to him/her. As I said in a more recent post, it's worth it if someone pays it, I reckon.

What Bruce posted; about 8lbs. Also, the center caps are slightly different. The originals have EMPI printed on them and most of the reproduction ones have Flat Four on 'em. Oh, there's also a little difference in price. In 1982, I thought that people were high as a kite for spending $1,000 on a set of original magnesium ones. In 2008, I've seen people spend $10,000 for the same wheels.

Here's a pic of some original polished ones that I took in June.

Here's an original unpolished one that I shot.

Here's my Flat Four polished ones with clear coat.

Draw your own conclusions, but I'll take the aluminum Flat Four ones any day. Way cheaper and safer. Besides, they're ugly.

8LBs a corner = 32lbs in total, I'd say go for repros and spend much less $ than a set of wheels on a bigger motor and stronger box ;D

original BRM's are good but they would never make my old 1776 run 11's, that's why I've spent about $2.5k so far on bits for a 2387 including Pauter crank and rods.

to me the wheels would be nice, but not a necessaty

for $3k I could get a set of new centerlines, slicks and front runners and a set of Flat 4 rims with street tyres.

You can make your repops look more original by having the clear coat striped and then polish the rims and spokes.  Adding 14mm lug studs and nuts plus a set of Fat Performance's re-done original center caps will add to the look.  A lot of "experts" are easily fooled... ;)

If you MUST have the original look, then go with Sarge's suggestion. He and I have the exact same wheels, but his look way more authentic than mine. I doubt that I'll ever go through all of that, though. I've had so many wheels that I've had to polish that I'm very over it. The only wheel polishing that I want to do is when I do customers' cars or helping a friend prep their car(s) for shows. Here's one of my wheels.
That or until I find someone to trade me a set of late 6" Fuchs five spokes in natural finish or my clear coat (God forbid) ever goes south. In the meantime, I love my clear coated wheels... when I pull my car outta the garage, I wipe off the BRMs, dust off the paint and windows, then I drive. Done deal. I used to have to polish my old wheels every other day to keep 'em in show condition. I'm not 20 years of age, any more. HAHA!! I'd rather spend that needless time (polishing) skateboarding empty pools and/or surfing.

The metal is pretty "tight" on a Flat Four and takes a long lasting shine very similar to a forged Fuchs wheel, so little polishing is needed.  I'm good for once a month on the outer rims with a little Never-Dull.  Now, those REAL BRM's..... :P ;)

COOL, Sarge. Thanks for the education on our wheels. Good to know, in case my clear coat ever dies away. If they're anything like the Fuchs metal, I'll be okay. When I had my 2.0 Liter wheels, they'd stay polished longer than my 8 spokes or 5 spokes. I've always favored Mother's Polish and corn starch to remove the black tarnish. Which left my Fuchs with a mirror like finish. Blue Magic, Simichrome, Never-Dull, etc. I've tried 'em all and they work well.

I know, Louis... it sounds stranger than fiction, but corn starch works in removing all of the tarnish from polishing raw metals. I was taught how to detail cars on our brand new '68 Savannah Beige Beetle from my Dad when I was six years old. After he got killed when I was 9.5 years young, I continued to detail cars. Mostly European ones. Along the path... I've learned, been taught, and have experimented with many methods to getting cars, boats, airplanes, and motorcycles looking better than new. I've never stopped cleaning cars and I never will, unless I'm not physically able.

All of that said, I really appreciate the Flat Four BRM wheels' finish. Makes life way easier. Sarge, going the other extreme; how does one remove the clear coat on said wheels? Just curious. I'm guessing paint stripper or something of the like.

Apply a coat/layer of fine black gravel spray coat (don't know the right words)to the black parts  of the rim and with a nail(the head(big diameter)) stand out while the fresh anti gravel , the 5 points on the spokes (black circle on the pict)

I think I get it now.  You make a set of fake BRMs look ratty so they will be perceived as real BRMs.  Is that it.  I guess I am missing something.  I have fake ones and at 30 mph nobody can tell...

I think I will keep polishing my real BRM's so that I can fool the experts into thinking they are fake.

God... I love this place.

 ;D

I love rubber gloves! ;D

Do original brms have those little circular impressions on the paint?

Wasn't their a guy in England years ago that buried his REAL BRM's in the ground and left them there for sometime, just so that they would  look older! No shit!

Yes, they are in the casting.  Probably wood parts screwed onto the mould.  My guess is the round things are the heads of flat head screws.

About 10 years ago when Doug brought out the Muffin, I noticed the real BRMs were badly corroded.  When I suggested he did that to prove they were Mg, he said that's the exact reason.

That's right you're missing something... maybe a part of brain  ;)

The purpose is not to make them look ratty. But just to give them a more original look. Because I don't like the brilliance finish and the machining perfection of the repro. Mine are not ratty, They are polished an the paint is in good condition.

But... everyone his taste...

Great jobb Redex! You really put some thought in to that!
I know some have tried that over here to but no one has gotten it half as nice as you.
The devil is in the details they say... :)

Thanks! But I need to say that it is my brother (Muppet Racer) who got the idea and did the job! When I see all the work he did so far on his car and mine, I would say that the devil is in his hands!

from what I heard sold for 14500 us
but in Belgium we say a knife cuts both ways, a story has two sides, ...
1- there is seller who is owner and gives a certain value to what he sells or offers
2- there is buyer who is owner of his funds and values his purchase ... a certain amount of money he likes to give in return for it
good luck to the new owner of the wheels
but this does not mean I am curious to find out ...
