Title: 1776: AS41 vs Alu
Post by: Jesse/DVK on October 13, 2008, 16:52:04 pm
Ok guys I'm about to buy myself a case for my 1776cc engine which I'm building. I can't choose between a new AS41 case of an Autolinea case. Here in Holland there is a groupbuy going on so the price of an Autolinea cases for 90.5mm with full flow is 450 euros. An AS41 which is bored for 90.5, full-flowed and has tapped oilways is 550 euros.

I know the Autolinea case is heavier, but it's a street car so I don't think it will make a big difference. I've searched on the Lounge and it seems that the oil temps of an alu case are higher? Are the oil galleys in an Autolinea case also tapped for threader plugs?

What would be the best choice?

Thanks,
Jesse

I´m going with AS41 mag case for my 2276 build. I still prefer pressure cast magnesium over sand cast aluminium. The machine shop sleeved the lifter bores with bronze bushings to avoid excessive wear. The case with all machine work (sleeving, full flow, boring and shuffle pins) cost me 750 EUR shipped to Europe from California.

a good original case is maybe a better option. the alu cases sometimes need machining as well i have seen some that need new lifterbushings and then the cost is up again. so get a good one and it will pay off in the end. i have a new brazil case for my 1776 and no problems whatsoever.

I got an autolinea myself and it also needed machining afterwards...  Can't tell you exactly what the enginebuilder just did but there were a few hours in finetuning the case.  Keep that in mind that it's possible.  But I'm pretty satisfied so far!  No problems since the engine is build.

The problem is that those new AS 41 cases have quality control issues too. Mine wasn't machined well. Both are made in Brazil.

Thanks guys for your replies. Think of going for an AS41 because that is machined by JMR so I think they also checkout the cases if they are good. The alu case isn't checked by a local shop.
