I've ordered an Aluminium one with a one piece back pulley so no spot wields

the one in the photo is a scat one I think, it was stamped USA.

Yep was driving at the time, managed to catch it in time before it went off.

I was lucky it didnt go off, it could have been alot more expensive. I've had to replace the alternator as well as the pulley   :(

Are you going to Flame and thunder, I may go if I can sort out my oil filter leak / fillter splitting problem  :'(

Have a CLOSE look at this pic of my friends 63 just after we pulled into EBI1 - notice anything funny ???

The Pulley EXPLODED about 5 miles before this pic! Half of it was stiil stuck in the vent area above the engine bay!

Hi Ron,
These 2276cc motors are fun arent they :-\

Im going to Flame and Thunder, had a small problem with one of my IDA's. The nut on the spindle had worked loose which then came off completely so awaiting bits to repair. God knows how it was still running 12's!

Chin up, as they say. Be good to see you and the bug again.

I didnt realise that alternator pulleys were such a problem, I thought it was just fans that that went bang, but talking to a few people it seems quite common   :-\

I had a porsche one from KK as well and it cracked. Also had signs of wear on a normal sized aftermarket one. Switched to genuine one and so far so good.

That is a Bugpack one with USA stamped into it,not Scat,
it really looks like there was another issue there, why is the edge so damaged where you would hold it to stop it turning when tightening? or is that a shadow in the picture? it looks like you had a problem tightening it maybe?

i have an aftermarket one on my car of unknown origin and its seen plenty of 8000+rpm over the last 8 years with out any problems so they can work ok :)

cheers richie

Like you say its very much luck of the draw - ours looked like it all ready had a crack and rust had got in and caused it to fail (Stand offs fitted ::)) I think as long as you know the "history" of the pulley you are using and don't damage it when you fit it - I think you should be ok - I have several original stashed away  ;) :)

Hi Richie

not sure about the damage to the pulley on the corners as I've only tightened it once since putting the engine in as it been running sweet as a nut, but when it did go, it pretty much took out the front of the alternator and the trailing egde on the pulley really dug in.

I havent got it now as it went in the bin but I think the crack started on one of the spot welds and ran in between the two notches

I've now bought an billet pulley so no spot welds as the whole back pulley is one piece and I'll give that a go. what do you think of these ???

It looks like its not that rare a failure ,like monkiboy said just been unlucky I guess.

Ron
