Title: How an ugly restolooker became a nice 54 convertible CAL LOOK
Post by: peter - belgium on October 29, 2008, 20:01:51 pm
The day the convertible arrived!
Plans for it: Overhaul the mechanics and just drive it as it is!

Engine removed, cleaning up the mess behind
(http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/491999.jpg)

What every Cal Looker need to be able to properly install a big engine ;) A removable rear apron!

After lots of hours, thinner, heat, scraping, ...

The convertible strenghtners are a bot rusted through, so time to replace them!

I decided not to replace the complete units, but restore the original ones by cutting out all the rot and replacing it with fresh metal
(http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/492003.jpg)

The inforcement part I made
(http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/492004.jpg)

a "tiny small hole" that needs fixing up :o

At this point the convertible was ready to drive:

new gearbox, new brakes up front and back, engine, dual circuit, ...

But then some things changed in my live and I decided to properly redo the convertible and just make it the way I wanted!
Turned out a very good decision, because everything I took off the convertible needed work. every little item had some things missing, or broken, or ...

So work started end May 08

So, removing everything that could be removed!
Wings removed, welding on the wings done, straightening all 4 of them... turned out some more work then anticipated.

cool project! love how it looks with the sprintstars. i'd love it even more if you dechromed it ;)
there's not enough dechromed old verts around!!  ;D

is this the 1776 engine you posted a long time ago?

The convertible came with 66 seats in the front, so I stripped a set of the correct oval seats to get the frames painted again. But also the chassis runners had to be restored since the PO fucked this up in an attempt to install the 66 seats.

And stripping the body

AUCH!! What was the idea here???

The doors needed a fair amount of work as well. These swung open too far at some point in live bending over the hinge. So nothing a big hammer and some rewelding can not fix ;)

And after primer comes color decision time!
I always liked Coral red (I painted the lower half of my old 66 samba Coral red as well)
So I still had that color sample, made it easier to decide on colors for the interior :D

2 days before DDD (which was my goal for this project), the engine died on me :o  So I got a spare engine from Gino and installed that in convertible, just to get to Bitburg!

And off we went!
// Also notice the original chromed sprintstars temporarily on loan from clubmember "Dr. Detail Philip"

But since there was still oil in the engine, we just carried on after some cleaning of the oil ;D

THANKS!!

It was indeed hard work (I spend around 4 months of very long evenings in the garage ) but I made it to DDD which was my goal!!

In the end there was a lot more welding then I anticipated, a lot more straightening, fiddling, adjusting, … As I said, everything needed work. There was not one part I could just take of and re-install as was :-[
When they painted the car blue, they also painted the sidewindows partially blue so that needed a lot of cleaning, adjusting the doors and sidewindows took me a lot of hours, but now all these are nicely aligned on top (how often have you seen this??), door are nice and even, all new rubber seals+chroom strips in doors, electrical wiring was done with cable used in houses, …

There are still several things to do, such as:
•   Narrow the front beam further (10cm) because now I can not fit my CSP disks due to the CB perfromace dropped spindles and offset of the wheels.
•   Fit the CSP disks up front
•   Paint and detail an original set of sprint-star wheels
•   New headliner (this one has a few big tears in there)
•   Nice engine (a pepped up 1600 for starters until I have all my parts for the 2027cc engine)
•   Finish of my PBW dual carb linkage for this engine     (=> will be a nice one 8))
•   SS bumpers
•   Finishing off the interior work (carpet, cover the strengthener below rear bench, …)
•   …

And all of this should be ready by March09 for the topless edition of the FreddyFiles in Ninove ;D

I do not know the exact type, it is one I found that has the same diameter rubbers as my VARGA dual master so it fitted outright.

I have several reservoirs I use for splitscreen dual circuit converisons, but these did not fit the VARGA MC (although they should fit the beetle ATE dual masters)

Hey Guys,

I just installed the 3th (in 1000km time) intermediate (and very stock) engine, and I still need to build a basic cal-look looking 1600cc engine for the convertible to get me around till next year so I have some more time gathering and preparing all the proper parts for the 2110cc.

So what I had in mind is:
- Stock 1600cc parts (maybe some weight balancing of rods and pistons, not fully balancing)
- Case full flowed only for external filter. Keep the standard cooling system as it is.
- Standard, blueprinted oil pump
- Standard dual-port heads  (maybe some mild porting on inlet ports and with cc’ing the chambers)
- Cam:  -> I have an original cam, an Engle 110, 120, FK87 and a SCAT C35    recommendations?
- CR??   Recommendations here?
- Carbs:   I have a set of 40 Webers with 28mm vents + a set of 36Webers with 32mm vents  … which set to use? (and the 40weber don’t have those locking screws for the vents so not sure if I can change them out???)
- Lightened flywheel with standard 200mm clutch
- Bosh 010
- Straight cut cam gears? Or just keep the original style?
- Standard lifter or  1.25:1 lifters on HD shafts?
- Would a 1641cc cylinder kit gain much?
- Heat exchangers with standard 4in1 modified to accept my merged INOX header => I want heat in my VW for a change, never had this before:-)

The goal is to just have a nice running engine built with parts I have that will get me to where I want to go. I do not want a high revving, high output, high maintenance engine. That I will keep for the 2110cc ;D I just want a good looking and reliable engine…

Thanks for your thoughts and input!

I saw the car in real yesterday, amazing paintwork done in "open air"...  ;) ;)

Really nice cab.

For the engine; Go stock cam, mild work on the chambers,3-anlge valve job, 8.5/1 with 36carbs on top.You won't be disapointed/

Thanks for the compliment Steve!!
Although the convertible has been prepped and painted in a barn, I think it can stand proudly next to a “professionally” painted car.
I’m very proud of my work since I’m not the body man and I do not really like that part of the resto (I prefer the welding and mechanical jobs!) but I did all the welding, prep work, straightening, primer, sanding, … on this convertible and then had fellow club-member Gino do the final color spraying. With some polishing here and there it turned out great

Thanks for the engine tip. I was also thinking of keeping things as mild and simple as possible on this engine since later on this will be my emergency back-up engine in case me (or a clubmember) needs to spare engine for a while. I will check what to do with that F*c% U# set of heads!

Small question for the carbs, 36Weber with which vents?? If I need to use the 28mm out the 40webers, can I just pull them out… since there is no locking screw on these I assume they are pressed in??

Another part done, my PBW linkage!
I wanted a robust linkage based on the original speedwell design (and therefore Gene Berg, who used Speedwell design as well), but with all joints on bearings for an accurate operation, because that is what is fundementally wrong with the GB linkages (at least... that is my opinion)!

The design phase: double checking all measurents
