Title: Calling the oldboys team, have anyone ever seen these wheels before??
Post by: Jon on December 18, 2008, 23:00:54 pm
Since the late eighties this set of mysterious wheels have been stirring up discussions all around Scandinavia.
They are not Sears Raders OR regular Raders, so what the heck are they? Ever seen anything like them?
The car was built by Trond Dahl (not that Trond Dahl) an he was also the one that had them widened.
Any ideas??

For comparison, here they are compared to a Sears Rader. The differences are many..

Are they a Sears Rader that had the centre crack out, and then get welded up? I've seen a few with the centre hole damaged. Once they're welded you could machine them to that shape.

Neal, check the with of the fat end of the spokes, they are way fatter that the Sears. And the centers have never been welded... also the centers are HUGE...

I also thought that they were Sears wheels who had the center modified in some way, but the "ring" with the bolt holes seem narrower? Optical illusion because of the paint & polish?

These are the differences I spot i comparison with the sears:
On these the gap between rim and lug nut is the same as between lug nut an center. This shows how big that center is.
The center is a pentagon shape without any bullet form.
The spokes are wider (fatter) all over. Especially in the widest end were they are easely10 mm wider.
The spokes protrude something like 10mm from the lug nut ring where they meet, the Sears are maybe 2-3 mm at this point.
The with of the lug nut ring is much narrower

And Monkey, they are cast...

Maybe a JP wheel in 205?? Are they one piece or bolt in/welded in centres??

When they were found they were riveted, but it think they were fastened with screws after widening.
JP has been mentioned, but I have never seen a JP wheels made by combining aluminum with steel. And I have yet to find any swede recognizing them...  looks more to be a US construction. ???

Just looking through an old thread on the samba about 80's customs and found this post by Stu Betty:

Thing is Buggin 74, most of the pics in Nigel's book were Mike Key's pics and they have been used in Volksworld etc. I have I would say 70% of the cars within the pages of that book are in my display.

Im not only gunning for a Back to 89 display Stateside, but also in Europe too. I did start collecting a wish list for Europe for a show like Bug In at Sweden, and had been in contact with Dalhems to help with it.

Ironically the car on the front cover in blue was found for me, now painted in grey. Does anyone remember T-111 a green cal looker on radars (when amusingly no one knew what wheels they were?), I have this one also in Norway.

The "Raiders" bug, theres a pic in the first ten pages of this thread.

Keep the pics coming, that gold plated ghia is the tits.

Anyone got pics of Plum Loco?

Stu

I wonder if Stu has any more information about the car - he seemed pretty sure they were Raders.

The thing is that I "know" the guy that found them, and know the whole story from his side... and he doesn't know more than they were sitting on a Notch from my next town.
But unless they are prototype raders, they are not raders... was MSW in business back then?? ;)

Could they be the Raider type wheel that JC Whitney Co. sold back then?
