Title: 2-wheeled volkswagen mayhem
Post by: Wünderwolff on December 28, 2008, 10:54:39 am
I was searching the WWW for pictures of dragracing VW rails and on page 634 or so I came along some pictures of dragbikes, powered by vw-engines.

The first one is the DragWaye, designed by Clive Waye in the early 60ties, powered by a 1300 SUPERCHARGED flat four. It was ridden in the seventies by Dave Lecoq, managing a 9.815 1/4 mile.

Anyone on here ever saw this "bike" make passes?

The second one is less crazy, but still ... It is Dave Bracketts race bike as seen on http://brackettracing.com/new_page_19.htm (http://brackettracing.com/new_page_19.htm).

Especially have a look at the use of the original gearbox. Too bad there are no pictures of the actual drive, but I'm guessing a sprocket has been mounted on the right side of the diff.

Can anybody else add too this list of bastards?

I had a customer years ago that had a VW powered BMW motorcycle (R 50 I believe) Per his request, I installed some dual Kadrons, ratio rockers and a custom exhaust... it was an interesting road test to say the least...

Lots of times! Blackbushe airport drag strip int he late 1960s. Awesome, tyre-smoking ride. Scary but awesome. Talked to Dave LeCoq a couple of years ago (he races vintage single-seaters) and he remembers the bike well. Believes it was broken up some time ago.

Damn, that Dave Lecoq guy must have had some balls  ;D ;D

On another note, how about some Swedish bikes? In my younger years I really was into bikes, Harleys were my favourite. And I always was amazed by the Swedish built bikes, they were ever so wild. And if you look at these three brawlers below, it is once again proven  ::) Any of the Scandinavians know these guys?

Holy Moses! The one on the left is, er, amazing (in a bizarre sort of way!). Gotta love the gas tanks, too!

COOL! That must've been a lot faster than the original engine, yes?

Fast?? Sort or... honestly, I've ridden much faster bikes.

Scary?? Oh yeah. The balance felt weird, you sat straight up on this thing, and the bike had no other upgrades... still had drum beakes, skinny tires, etc.

Just another day at the office ;)

Sorry it's not a VW, but EJ Potter was one crazy MF back in the old days at Lions.

Sarge, you should have posted this in the "Vintage BMX" thread.

That is one giant engine for nothing more than a bicycle  :o

The best part of seeing that thing run was watching the burnout.  He'd put the front wheel up against a sawed off telephone poll near the starting line and roast the tire until the you couldn't see shit. 8) 8) 8)  MAJOR balls!!! :o :o
