Title: Precision Measuring Tools
Post by: louisb on January 03, 2009, 04:58:44 am
What precision measuring tools are needed to assemble a hi-po VW engine? (and sizes) Micrometers, dial indicators, dial bore gauge, etc. Any preferred brands? I have heard that Brown & Sharp, Starrett & Fowler are good.

Thanks,

In a perfect, money not important world  you need a 0-1" micrometer, 2-3" micrometer, 0-1"depth mic, 1" x .001" resolution dial indicator with a magnetic base, .0001" resolution test indicator, .0005 resolution 2-6" dial bore gage, and a pair of 12" dial calipers. I'm a machinist by trade and I trust anything by Brown and Sharpe, Mitutoyo and Starrett. Fowler mostly just relabels Chinese and Polish shit.

I also agree, I am retired from the trade after 30+ years, and yea, Brown and Sharp and Starrett and Mitutoyo, I trust. I own all Starrett for years, when I had them calibrated, they were always right on. But I always took care of them. As far as sizes, the same. Dial bore gage, I like Mituoyo. Just my 2 cents.

I was looking at eBay and you can find used equipment fairly reasonable. Thanks for the input.
